Resumo: The hosting organization is the largest and longest established environmental NGO on the Maltese islands aiming to protect and conserve the birds that breed or migrate on the islands and raise awareness about birds and the natural world among Maltese society and visitors.
For over 50 years the hosting organization has been working to protect birds and nature in Malta and inspire and educate people about the natural world. Today it manages three nature reserves that act as refuges for breeding and migrating birds, undertakes research in to the birds that nest or migrate over the islands to understand and better protect them and inspires and educates Maltese society and visitors to the islands about birds and the natural world. Another key area is influencing and lobbying wider society to reduce the impact of human pressures on birds, including hunting, trapping and urbanisation.
To achieve this, the organization organises Dinja Wahda an education programme that reaches 80% of Maltese primary schools to educate children about nature. It also organises educational visits by schools to its reserves and other key sites for nature on the islands. Additionally, it organises a range of public events and actvities to inspire and engage all sectors of Maltese society as well as tourists with birds and wildlife. Furthermore, each spring and autumn the organization organises two bird camps where volunteers from Malta and all over the EU monitor the spectacular migration of birds that takes place over the islands as birds travel between their breeding areas in Europe and wintering grounds in Africa. The camps also involve the monitoring of the impact of hunting and trapping on migrating birds and they are used to raise awareness about the problems caused by uncontrolled and illegal in both Malta and across the EU.
In 2014, the organization will be establishing and operating a bird rehabilitation centre so that birds that are illegally shot by hunters can be cared for and eventually released in to the wild. The organisation is also establishing a new nature reserve in Malta that will increase the amount of habitat it manages for birds and provide opportunities for more education and awareness raising events and activities. It is expected that this nature reserve will be fully operational by 2015.
To achieve the impact that it has, the organization employs professional staff, is managed by a Council of Trustees and relies on volunteers from Malta and other parts of the EU. This makes it a Maltese organisation made up of a a unique blend of people of different nationalities and cultures, making it an exciting and dynamic place to work or voliunteer.
