Special considerations about the Host organization: The Organization is located in the city of Bolzano, South-Tyrol. This region is very special seen that it has a particular history and it's bilingual (Italian and German). The local culture has Austrian basis. The service is developed in both languages simultaneously: some educators and children prefer to communicate in German while others in Italian.
The central office of the Organization is located in the city of Bolzano, a city with about 100.000 inhabitants. Bolzano district has about 450.000 inhabitants and is part of the Trentino Alto Adige region (South Tyrol), situated in Northern Italy. The region is one of the richest in Italy, being the city one with the highest quality of life of the country. There are three different languages spoken in Bolzano's region: Italian (26,47%), German (69,15%) and Ladin (4, 37%). In fact, Bolzano is a unique city in his type, or better, is a meeting point between two of major cultures in Europe: the Mediterranean and middle European one. In this reality, our volunteers will experiment that all cultures should be respected in a similar manner and living together is possible.
Bolzano is situated 265 meters upon the sea level alongside the Brennero connection, in the hearth of the Dolomites region of Alto Adige. The site is reachable with any mean of transportation, highway, train, plane, and is situated among the best known European path which connect the Costanza lake to Venice.
On the geographical point of view Bolzano benefit of a lucky position, in front of Dolomites and close to the meeting point between the Talvera and Isarco rivers, in a basin protected from the winds and sunny during all the day and the year long. The meteorologist attributes to Bolzano the prize for the coldest city in Italy, the average year temperature varies between 16,6 and 6 degrees, but sun shines in average 300 days per year and summers are quite hot.
The Bolzano historical centre is rich of tradition, history and art, and also the core business of the city: Via Portici, Piazza Walther, Corso Libertà: with few steps is possible to cross the thousand years old history of a city born for trade and business.
Perfil: The project is open to every young person who has a special interest and sensibility to children and could bring new energy and enthusiasm to the host organization, helping to improve the life quality of those children and enriching the free-time activities’ possibilities.
Once that the volunteers will be permanently in contact with children, they should have a positive behavior, be open to play games and make different kind of activities, available to listen to children with patience, and have certain initiative and creativeness. Basic knowledge of Italian and/or German would be important to facilitate the integration of volunteers, specially taking into consideration the bilingual situation of the region and the service. The volunteer should be ready to learn Italian/German and get deeply engaged.
The project is open to every major young person who has a special interest and sensibility to children and could bring new energy and enthusiasm to VKE, helping to improve the life quality of those children and enriching the free-time activities' possibilities. Once that the volunteers will be permanently in contact with children, they should have a positive behaviour, be open to play games and make different kind of activities, available to listen to children with patience, and have certain initiative and creativeness.
The recruitment process is done together with a Coordinating Organization. Coordinating Organization makes a pre-selection process taking into account all young people who contacted them directly by e-mail or through a Sending Organization, considering their motivation and commitment with the project and voluntary work (expressed in their motivation letter and e-mails). Coordinating Organization always try to keep a gender and geographic balance between the whole volunteers' group present in the Host Organization, considering not only the applicants, but also the already existing group. The final decision concerning the pre-selected candidates is taken by the VKE's director: Mr. Pompermaier, following a decision by the Provincial Steering Organization.
Seen that currently Host organization counts with the support of young volunteers from the Italian and German Civil Services (who also has to be followed and supported), usually we host only one volunteer from the EVS. In this moment, we would be able to host a maximum of 2 EVS volunteers every year
Once that our regular activities concerns children and young people, we believe that we are prepared to receive volunteers with social and/or economical an geographic obstacles, besides those with cultural differences or educational difficulties.
Our institution have the support of several parents and other well qualified professionals which are prepared to support young people which may face those kind of difficulties. So we believe that hosting volunteers with this kind of fewer opportunities would not be problematic, but in fact, could be even a positive example to our children, besides a nice opportunity to the volunteer him/herself.
Tarefas: " what will be the role of EVS volunteers in the Host Organisation,
The main role of the volunteer is to collaborate with the staff of the Organization, supporting the regular activities proposed to children in the different spaces for games and proposing new recreational and entertainment options. The volunteer will never be alone carrying out the activities and should never be forced to do something s/he doesn't want to. S/he will be there as VOLUNTEER therefore, s/he will not substitute the place of the educators or regular staff.
" the activities in which the volunteers could be involved and the activities the volunteers could create in your organisation. Please give examples of typical activities for the volunteers.
After experiencing a little bit about each Organization's project, the volunteer will be able to choose the activities s/he would like to carry out. S/he will have the chance to plan together with Organization's director and the work supervisors a weekly timetable, taking into consideration her interests and capacities. The timetable, the activities and the project the volunteer will be integrated in (like the "Spielbus" or the summer camps) can be changed taking into consideration punctual needs and the volunteer's wellbeing.
According to the capacities and personal interests of the volunteer, s/he will be asked to organise her/his own projects for the entertainment, alone or together with the volunteers of the Italian and German National Civil Service. Creative ideas and contributes of the volunteer are very welcome, they will be evaluated and integrated, if possible, in the activities organized for the children and youth. S/he could, for example, organize sport activities, music workshops, theatre, workshop, a circus, dancing activities or propose the children typical games of her/his country.
Mainly in the game centres the volunteer can organize workshops about her/his own culture, evenings about the
music or typical dances or offer a language course to the children and their parents etc.
The tasks of the volunteer are the followings:
- participation at the organization and at the realization of the games with the "Spielbus" and in the game
centres
- summer centres organization and accompaniment
- organization and realization of workshops concerning her country, for example about a typical day of a
child in the own country, concerning Europe etc.
- organization of inter-cultural activities together with the other European volunteers or the German civil
servers
- create awareness about the rights to play of young people
- participation in the team-meetings and the monthly supervision with the other volunteers
- promotion of new activities and projects connected to the voluntary service, for example the presentation of the possibility to do an European Voluntary Service to the young people of the Province of Bolzano.
We would like to underline that the volunteer will have a particular role in our team. S/he will participate in general activities in collaboration with the education team, but her/his main role is to enrich the offer of activities with her/his presence, with new ideas and projects, integrating activities which are connected to her/his own culture, to the aspect of "inter-cultural" dimension and to the living together of people with different cultural backgrounds. The team of the Organization is very open towards topics concerning interculturality seen that the members, volunteers, employees and users belong to the three ethical groups of the Province (Italian, German and Ladin) so that the peaceful living together and also the bilingualism (trilingualism) have a very important role and are always present in the association. Being the VKE already an inter-cultural area, the volunteer will not have difficulties in integrating into the team.
Horário: Usually the volunteers will work 5 days a week and will have 2 days off. The working hours should be from Monday to Friday, but it's possible that sometimes the volunteers should make some shifts (because of some special kind of activity during the weekend, for example). In those cases, the volunteers will have one extra day off in the following week.
The timetables of the different projects are the followings:
"Spielhaus" (game centre) - opening hours
Morning - 9.00-12.00
Afternoon - 15.00.18.00 (16:00-19:00 in July and August)
"Spielbus"

Midday - 13.00 - 14.30 (active during school-break)
Afternoon - 14.30 - 18.30 (game actions during the week)
Continuous working time at the "game actions" during the weekend.
children holidays
Continuous working time ca. 9.00-17.00 from Monday to Friday in the months of June, July, August, September
At some places only in the morning (8.00-12.00) or in the afternoon (14.00-18.00).
special actions
Città dei ragazzi MiniBZ - during the second half of June - Bolzano
Continuous working time 10.00-18.00 from Monday to Friday
Condições: The volunteers will not face any rules or conditions different from what it's expected inside of the European Union. During the activities, the volunteers will always be supported by their mentor, as well as their work supervisors and the EVS coordinator of the Association INCO (which usually acts as our coordinating organization, helping us with all bureaucratic and administrative procedures, besides the orientation and support to the volunteers).
The competences and attitudes we expect the volunteer to acquire during the service are the followings:
" inter-cultural sensitiveness and knowledge in inter-cultural communication
" competences in the organization and coordination of projects
" abilities in leading and coordinating groups
" knowledge about new socio-cultural realities which are different from their own one
" competences concerning the social work with children and youngsters
" sensitiveness concerning the rights of the children
" improvement of abilities in the field of animation and promotion of recreational activities (free-time
activities but also pedagogical and educational ones)
" personal growth: independence, self-confidence etc.
Through the activities developed by the volunteer during the service, there will be the possibility to organize and
realize projects related to their own culture, to the aspect of intercultural communication and any other topic they
think would be appropriated. In this way, the volunteer will probably learn to work autonomously and to rely on her/his own capacities and knowledge, developing self-confidence. The opportunity of being out of one's own country and culture will give to the volunteer the chance to reflect, to open her/his mind and to grow up as an individual.
The volunteer will also have the chance to participate in an Italian language course, which probably lasts 30 hours and takes place two times a week, in the evening. Once that Bolzano is a bilingual region, as soon as the volunteers acquired sufficient knowledge in order to do the activities using Italian language, it could also be possible to organize a German course to those who would like to.
During the whole period of the service, monthly meetings will be arranged between the volunteers and the mentor. Those meetings will be an additional opportunity to exchange opinions and impressions between the volunteer and the staff of the nursing homes. It will be a space to talk about eventual problems, perplexities or curiosities. Besides that, the EVS coordinator of INCO will organize regular meetings with the volunteer in order to check if the project is being developed in the foreseen way.
