Resumo: The hosting organization is a youth work organisation located on a farm in a rural area in Belgium. The aim of the organisation is to counteract alienation between people within each other and between people and nature. The hosting organization is a sociocultural organisation and is organised for and with children and youngsters, with a strong focus on learning by doing, inclusion, ecology and sustainability. Our starting point is that everyone is welcome on the farm, whatever the age, gender, religion, conviction, social background, and whatever the abilities or disabilities. We try to see the best in everyone and we have a positive view on the world and on society.

The farm contains a huge meadow where most of the animals can live together. We have a lot of natural 'play elements' on the meadow where children can play among the animals. We also have a vegetable garden, an orchard, an experimental garden and a pond. The farmstead includes a youth centre with 41 beds.

During the year, we welcome schools and other groups. The groups visit for one or several days and can help feeding the animals, and work on the farm or in the garden. Kids can take a pony ride, or we organise a workshop such as baking bread in the authentic wood oven, making felt out of the wool of our sheep, making butter… Experience-based learning is of great importance to Diggie and we like the kids to have time to play on the meadow and explore.

During the holidays we organise farm camps for children and teenagers. The children stay on the farm for a week and they help taking care of the animals and garden, do youth work activities, get to know each other and the farm and of course play. The camps are guided by a group of young volunteers. They organise activities for the children like outdoor games, workshops, day trips to the woods in the neighbourhood,... As we focus on inclusion, we have a lot of children with several kinds of disabilities and children with a socially vulnerable background on the camps.

We also host some adults with special needs to help on the farm, in the garden or with the animals.
Each year, at the end of August, we organise the feest, a whole weekend with activities for children and youngsters (and there parents of course), creative workshops, live music, entertainment, barbecue, and many more. We have up to one hundred volunteers to make this weekend into a success.

Tarefas: The ESC-volunteer’s tasks on the farm are very diverse.

As a starting point, the ESC-volunteer will get to know our organisation. This means that he/she/they will participate in all the parts of our organisation.

The hosting organization’s main focus is the youthwork. The ESC-volunteer will take part in several youthwork activities such as ‘de woonweek’ (where all the volunteers live for a week on the farm), weekends for volunteers and the summercamps that we give. During these activities he/she/they will get to know the other volunteers with whom he/she/they organise several activities for children between 3 and 15 years old.

We would like the ESC-volunteer to accompany the adult volunteers with special needs on the farm. Each day, we have three to six adults with some kind of disability or a socially vulnerable background. They come to work on the farm, each one at his/her own pace. We would like the ESC-volunteer to guide them through their tasks and accompany them during their work.

As the ESC-volunteer learns more Dutch, further options are for example to involve him/her in guiding the visiting groups on the farm and accompanying kids on a farm camp. We’ll teach the ESC-volunteer some specific skills needed on the farm. He/she/they will learn to heat up the wooden oven to bake bread and pizzas, how to make felted balls out of our sheep’s wool, butter/ice cream out of our neighbour farmer’s milk or make candles all by yourself.

The ESC-volunteer will take part in the editor’s group to make all that happens on or with the farm known to the world. He/she/they will organise the social media (Facebook, Instagram, website and newsletter) in cooperation with the volunteers form this group. He/she/they will connect the farm and the volunteers that coordinate the social media. The ESC-volunteer will as well take part in the 2-monthly meetings where the social media strategy will be evaluated and planned.

When the ESC-project moves on and the ESC-volunteer will get to know the farm in all it’s pieces and bits, he/she/they will get an own project to work on. During the year of 2020 we started a new project in which we will pick up a signal from one of our target groups (children with a disability). No worries, all of the investigation will be led by one of our professionals.

The task of the ESC-volunteer will be to visualise the signal that these children gave us. We don’t yet know what this signal will be so it is a little hard to foresee if this visualisation will be for the local politicians, for our own volunteers or partner organisations. We will leave it up to the ESC-volunteer to use his creativity to create this visualisation. This can be with a video, a photo album, a comic book, a podcast,… according to the capacities of the ESC-volunteer.
This project can change if the ESC-volunteer and we find another project where the ESC-volunteer can work on.

Condições: Accommodation
The place of residence depends on the ESC-volunteer‘s preference. One option is to stay in a the small village. We will then look for a hosting family or a nearby place of residence. In this case we’ll also provide a bike to come to the organization. Another option is that the volunteer lives in other town, a city 30km away. Then we‘d search for a room or house to share with peers. From Ghent the ESC-volunteer will have to take train and bus every day to come to the organization.
All costs of residence and transport will be payed by the organization. We provide 200€ monthly for food.

Living
The ESC-volunteer will be expected to cook for himself and do his own laundry. The hosting organization will indicate a coach who will help you with these sorts of questions. This coach will help you to find the way to a supermarket, help you use a laundry machine,…

Fun
Over 100 young volunteers find themselves connected to the hosting organization. And all of them have one goal in common: they want to have fun on the organization. During the project the ESC-volunteer will get to know a lot of these volunteers with whom he/she/they will be able to explore the world!
