Resumo: Tulime ONLUS is a non-profit organization committed in international cooperation in Tanzania, Uganda and Nepal, as well as cooperation activities in Italy. Tulime, which in Swahili language means “Let’s cultivate!”, encourages ecology, a sharing and co-development culture, and the respect for human rights, with an approach oriented to awareness and daily life improvement.

The founding principle of the organization is the development of a cooperation model strongly connected to the local population, and connected to the establishment and maintenance of deep and lasting bonds among different communities, with respect to the principles of environmental sustainability. In other words, Tulime carries out a cooperation model based on an exchange oriented to the general development of one or more communities establishing a mutual relationship; a kind of model that goes over the concept of development meant as actions that a rich country offers in support of a poor one. One of the strategies followed by Tulime to get this target is people’s mobility both to the countries where Tulime carries out its action, and from these countries to Italy, promoting a direct knowledge between different cultures and populations. Volunteers travel in order to develop those projects made up and shared with local communities, both through university trainee students, and through conscious tourism. For this reason, the key action 1, which is oriented to a young mobility encouraging formal and informal learning of abilities and competences, represents for Tulime a great opportunity to support its own activity, since it is oriented to encourage volunteers to move towards realities that are different from the starting context, and allow more and more young people to carry out cooperation activities in Tanzania, Uganda and Nepal.

In these latter two countries, Tulime acts principally on two fields concerning education promotion: on one hand, there are projects concerning schools building and re-building; on the other hand, there are projects aimed to encourage educators and teachers’ training. Tulime acts in Tanzania as well, in particular in the eleven villages on the upland of Iringa, Kilolo district. The projects carried out by Tulime in Tanzania concern various matters and objectives: sustainable agriculture, beekeeping, education, health, micro-credit, fair trade, disabled assistance and albinism. Tulime takes part in events all around Italy by arranging laboratories and workshops on topics related to Education and Earth, Education to Development and Education to Active Citizenship. It collaborates with centres dealing with sustainable and organic agriculture, as well as with the association Officina Solidarietà, which promotes socially useful works through gardening. Tulime arranges fundraising events to sustain actions in the South of the world, as well as training and sensitizing meetings in schools at every level. In Italy, Tulime offers courses of Swahili language and Tanzanian culture, and it plans cultural events such as the cine-forum named “Cinefilosofia”.Through the mobility of young Europeans, who will be therefore able to meet the organization and its innovative way of cooperating both in the developing countries and in Italy, Tulime aims to spread good actions and develop a civic sense that overtakes any prejudice on poor countries.

It is structured like a network, with branches all around Italy formed by small groups of people: this makes it flexible and dynamic but with a guarantee of strong and efficient actions. Furthermore, it carries on a new peculiar cooperation strategy, in which small groups of people adopt a whole village instead of a single person, so as to ensure its support to the entire community. Tulime’s volunteers are mostly young people under 30. They deal with the association management organized in groups, such as the projects group, translation group, fundraising group, and operating group.
