Resumo: One of the fundamental aims of the association is to help people, who are blind or visually impaired, to achieve enough self-autonomy and to be fully integrated in a society. In order to reinforce these aims the association promotes voluntarywork.
This voluntary work is aimed for those members who have not yet reached the degree of personal autonomy or are permanently not autonomous enough to do their daily activities, such as travelling, daily tasks like: going to a bank, to a doctor, paying the bills, etc…reading for pleasure, free time activities, etc…) and whose families, relatives or friends cannot offer them enough support.
Perfil: A perfect candidate to be a volunteer should be ready to devote their free time in the benefit of the persons with visual impairments in an altruist way and whose physical and mental condition is enough in order to do the project duties; i.e. a person with no mobility problems and motivated enough (sometimes, the Project activities can seem routine), flexible (the actividades have no fixed timetable, as they mostly depend on the needs of ONCE members, moreover, the activities within la Noche es Joven take place at the weekend during late hours), able to motivate a person with visual impairment to go out and enrich their social life. Moreover, the volunteer should be ready to live in a shared room with other european volunteer.
Due to project characteristics and on the basis of the experience of our previous volunteers, the perfect candidate for this project should have at least the basic level of Spanish- because the project is too short to allow volunteers with absolutely NO knowledge of Spanish to learn enough to carry out project tasks satisfactorily, bearing in mind the language support that we can offer as a coordinating organization. We have learnt with experience that a too long adaptation period and too easy project tasks for a long period of time, can demotivate young volunteers strongly. Our intention is to host volunteers with different language levels, so that they can help each other and the person with a higher level of Spanish can be in charge of the group of volunteers and represent them at the association.
In any case, we will make sure, that the volunteers have learnt some basic notions of Spanish during their pre-departure training; moreover, we’ll provide all the volunteers with the list of websites and useful links to enable them to learn some basic Spanish at home. At the beginning of the Project an adequate language support will be provided, according to volunteer’s level and project needs.
Our Project is open to both: male and female volunteers, in order to make voluntary service as versatile as possible and bearing in mind that some elderly people prefer to be helped by men or women. In all cases, balance is to be kept. In order to create an intercultural environment and not to discriminate anyone, our intention is to host volunteers, whose countries of origin are different, or at least whose mother tongue is different, thus it makes communication in Spanish easier and enriches the project in general.
All the volunteers must respect the aims and objectives of Asociación Ser Joven, Youth in Action Programme. They should also actively take part in different training courses or evaluation meetings, which are an important part of the Project, both established by the National Agency and by the coordinating organization.
Tarefas: Accompaniment to people with blindness and visual impairments, with administrative tasks (bank, doctor, shopping,…) and help them to participate in activities and support in different workshops: ceramic, theatre, reading, yoga…, accompany them in excursions or trekking, in big events and celebrations in which people without self-autonomy or family support would not be able to participate.
Horário: The activities have no fixed time-table, as they depend on the specific needs of the members of the association as well as on the weather conditions.
An example of a time-table would be the following:
· 3 to 4 hours of activity, accompaniment to blind people, in the mornings (between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.)
· 2 hours of activity, accompaniment to blind people and participation in workshops, in the afternoons (between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.)
Condições: Work Hours and Days Off:
Volunteers will work on average around 6 hours a day from Monday to Friday. Normally all volunteers will have their two days off at theweekends, except when the “Noche es Joven” or other weekend activities are carried out, in which case volunteers will have their two days off during the week.
They have the right to have holidays according to the Programme (2 days per each project month); the exact dates will be agreed
between the volunteer and the host organization.
Board, lodging and food:
Volunteers will live in a shared flat, rented by the association. The flat has got three bedrooms (as there are four to six volunteers living there,the rooms will be shared), two bathrooms, two balconies, the living room and the kitchen. There is a television with national and international channels and internet access (WI-FI). The flat is situated in a block of flats 20 minutes by bus from the centre (40 minute walk).
Each volunteer will be paid a monthly amount of money for food (it’s currently 185 €) and they will buy whatever they need and cook themselves.
Local Transport:
Volunteers will be provided with Travel Cards in order to use public transport home- work venue- home.
Language Training:
We will offer volunteers an intensive training course at the beginning of the project (if needed) according to volunteer’s skills and level.
Volunteers’ allowance:
Volunteers will receive € 105 of monthly allowance during the first week of each month.
Mentor:
To assure the supervision and effective monitoring of every volunteer, the Coordinating Organization will be responsible to monitor the learning process of the volunteers- that will be explained in detail during the On-arrival Training, making a mid evaluation during Mid-Term Meeting and issuing Youthpass- ,a learning Outcomes Report at the end of the project.
Volunteers will be provided their mentor who will introduce the volunteer into the citylife, help with practical matters, help to solve any problems for example if they face a situation of crisis.
Formação: At the beginning of the activity, all volunteers are offered a special training course by specialists in which they learn:
- the history, aims and functioning of the institution and different services it offers,
- the meaning and importance of voluntary work;
- relation with people with blindness and visual impairment;
- techniques of accompaniment to people with visual impairment;
- types of visual impairments.
