Resumo: “Europe, One Step to the future II” is the title of the project in which the volunteer from Portugal is going to take part in Voluntary Service in Moldova. The service will last for 6 months.
Volunteer will be hosted in the hosting projects of Small Group Homes, a non-governmental, non-profit, apolitical and independent organization.
The main activities is to offer a temporary home to children who are to be reintegrated into their birth family or to be placed in a foster care family.
The volunteer will help with realization of this objective and will gain experience, will be assisting the social workers in taking care of the children, bring children from school, help with homework, help with cleaning or other housework, will organize leisure time for children. They will play different games, go for walks together and work in the interest clubs after school. Together they will perform the art and cultural projects. The volunteers will be given an opportunity to bring their own ideas to the project.

Perfil: The volunteer taking part in this project is outgoing and enthusiastic young persons. The candidate must be independent and mature person who is motivated to broaden their experiences and gain practical skills in the field of Human Rights and working with children in need, which will compliment their academic knowledge in future.

Tarefas: Main goal of the Centre is to develop a family – house atmosphere for children. Every day there is a specific schedule that is respected. Approximately it looks like: morning: get up, preparing for school, clean the bed, go to school; noon: come from school, lunch, sleep; after-noon: do homeworks, free-time – interest clubs, dinner, cleaning the rooms, prepare for bed; in the week-end day children have more free time and in the centre it is organized some recreational activities.

Volunteer’s role, especially in the beginning till volunteer will learn Romanian language, will be assisting the social workers in taking care of the children, bring children from school, help with homework, help with cleaning or other housework.

After learning the language volunteer will organize leisure time for children. They will play different games, go for walks together and work in the interest clubs after school. Together they will perform the art and cultural projects. The volunteers will be given an opportunity to bring their own ideas to the project.

The project should develop an intercultural bridge for the children and support their ability of the communication and positive thinking. It is a great chance for the children to learn more about other countries and different cultures and traditions. During the project the children will have a possibility to open and express themselves and develop their skills and talents. Through constant communication with Moldovan children and the staff, playing national games, singing songs, telling tales etc., the volunteers will receive a unique opportunity to get to know Moldovan culture and probably to discover something new in their own culture by looking at it from another perspective. Dealing with children in the centre, the volunteers will improve their social and communication skills, develop knowledge, hobbies and interests in variety of fields (like handcrafts, dancing, singing etc.) and finally will receive a valuable experience in social work.

The volunteers will work mainly with the age group 6-12. Their main tasks will consist in:
- playing with the children, using his /her creativity and games he/she knows
- assisting the children with their daily needs and responsibilities
- picking up children from the school
- read stories and songs in easy language
- organize painting and crafts workshops
- helping centre’s staff in cleaning, laundering and cooking for children

A TYPICAL DAY TASKS:
Morning or afternoon according to the volunteers’ proile and needs and according to the children’ schedule.

• meetings with staff, supervisor, director; planning the work (15%)
• work with the children in the workshops (later on with own programmes) (40%)
• support to recreational activities (20%)
• helping centre’s staff in household (20%)
• assistance in the special classes (5%)

The volunteers’ part in caring for the children would for the most part entail spending time with them, playing and eating with them, possibly teaching them some language in a playful way, sports, or art. There may be times when the volunteers are asked to stay with some of the children when staff persons on occasion have appointments or requirements to be met. However the volunteers will not be responsible for the children’s health.

The volunteer tasks will be revised upon volunteer arrival according to the current activities of the organization and motivation and abilities of the volunteer. Volunteer also will be asked to work during the weekend, he/she will be allocated day off during the week.

Although the volunteer will be given the necessary extent of autonomy to develop their approach to the project issues and will be encouraged to work independently. Within IDC (Information and Documentation Centre) volunteers will get involved in such activities like:
• to maintain IDC’s database;
• helping in organizing workshops, round tables, seminars for different interested groups;
• to assist the documentalist in planning bibliographical databases.

Horário: Working hours are from 09:00-17:00 with some free hours for the language lessons.The volunteer will have extra 2 days of holidays per month which can be accumulated and taken, upon previous agreement with the project supervisor.

Condições: Volunteer will live in a host family or volunteer’s flat with shared kitchen, toilet and bathroom. Also volunteer will have acces to the land line phone in their accomodation. Internet can be accessed in the internet cafes and wifi spots in the city, also some volunteer flats have internet access at individual basis. Depending on the district of the city where volunteer will live he/she can reach the center by foot or by public transportation. Volunteer will receive pocket money, food and local transportation allowances from Small Group Homes.
Normally volunteer is picked up by the mentor(s) and is brought to the place of the accomodation. For better adaptation Small Group Homes provides volunteer(s) with on-arrival orientation, volunteer receive map of the city, dictionary, intensive language course language.and are enroled to on-arrival training. Small Group Homes also arranges first meeting at the Center in order to get to know the Centre, staff, beneficiaries, activities also to discuss rights and responsabilities of the volunteer(s) and the schedule of volunteer’s working week.
Small Group Homes s located in the city centre of Chisinau, on the 4th floor of the four floors building. It’s easy to access by any mean of public transport. Small Group Homes as a big office with director’s room, coordinators’ rooms, conference hall, reception and bathroom.
Volunteer has lunch outside the centre. She can have tea/cofee in the institute.
Volunteer will work in the office of the Institute and outside the office on the spot: trainings, seminars, informative meetings in different institutions of Chisinau for youth and adults. There is possibility to have field trips around the Chisinau region.
Volunteer will have working space, will be provided with computer and access to Internet and other office facilities.
Volunteer will be coordinated both by volunteer’s coordinator on general issues, like working schedules and general activity plans; and by project supervisors, in case if volunteer is involved in assisting of an Small Group Homes specific project implementation,

Accommodation, food, local transport, linguistic support
Volunteer will live in the rented flat with other volunteers or in the host family with shared kitchen, bath and toilet.
Volunteer will receive monthly food and transportation allowance from Small Group Homes.
Volunteers can choose weather they would like to learn Romanian or Russian language. Upon arrival all volunteers have intensive language course and language course during the project duration.
