Resumo: The project environment is the SOS-houses, meaning that the volunteers will be most of their time in those
structures: a house in which around 6 children and youngsters live together with the SOS-mother. The
atmosphere is the one of a big family, where one supports the others, trying to build a peaceful and comfortable
feeling, contrasting the difficult situation in which those children and youngster previously were.

Perfil: The project is open to every major young person who has a special interest and sensibility to children
(especially those in a difficult situation) and could bring new energy and enthusiasm to “Villaggio SOS di
Vicenza” and its houses, helping to improve the life quality of those children and enriching the free-time
activities’ possibilities. Once that the volunteers will be permanently in contact with children, they should have
a positive behavior, be open to play games and make different kind of activities, available to listen to children
with patience, and have certain initiative and creativeness. Some further characteristics would be welcome,
although they are not essential: basic knowledge of Italian (which could facilitate the initial integration of the
volunteers in the activities); knowledge of other foreign languages (like French or English – which could be
useful in helping children with their homework) and driving license (which could be useful supporting eventual
transport and/or accompaniment of children).

Tarefas: As a volunteer, you are expected to collaborate with the staff of your project without having to take on any legal responsibility. Of course, each project requires volunteers to do certain tasks. Sometimes you will also be alone with the children. But you will never be forced to do something you don't want to do. You are a VOLUNTEER and not a social worker. Nevertheless, you will be asked to perform different tasks such as organizing free-time or recreational activities for children, staying with the very little children of the project „Mamma con bambino“, helping them with their homework, organizing a day out in the countryside, accompanying children to activities outside of the center accompanying children to school or to kindergarden, assisting them in different workshops together with the educators, participating in workshops according to your abilities, participating to meetings of evaluation and planning certain matters with educators and social workers etc.
The volunteer of Villaggio SOS would carry out the following tasks among others:
1) Accompanying the children and under aged youngsters of the village to school and to free-time activities.
2) Organizing certain re-creational free time activities with her/his own intiative, together with other volunteers or educators of Villaggio SOS s/he plans:
- sport activities like football, tennis, swimming, volleyball etc.
- game-evenings, movie-nights etc.
- trips by bicycle, to the countryside, the sea or to the mountains etc.
3)Helping the children of the village with their homework. By providing constant presence during this activity, the volunteer would have the opportunity to observe if the children are able to do their exercises autonomously or if they need special help. The volunteer should create an atmosphere that makes it easier for the children to focus and to study.
4)The volunteer helps also in the kitchen, that means s/he makes some purchases, helps in preparing the meals etc. The volunteer has lunch with the children which happens to be a great opportunity for building mutual trust and for creating a familial atmosphere.

Horário: All the volunteers at Villaggio SOS of Vicenza have different working hours, depending on the project they are working at. You will work around 35 hours on five days a week (usually from Tuesday to Saturday or Sunday to Thursday). The exact timetable depends on the project you will work at; it can be from 8 p.m to 4 a.m., from 12 p.m. to 8 a.m., from 8 to 9 p.m. and then from 1 to 8 a.m.
Once the volunteer has been assigned to the project, her/his activities will be planned more specifically according to the needs of the centre and to the wishes and the capacity of the volunteer.
Sometimes there will be a shift system, meaning that it is also possible to have some work on your usual free-day. In this case, you will have some days off during the following week. If you rather, you can join this day-off to your holidays in accordance with the responsible of your project.
Holidays:
All EVS volunteers are entitled to take 12 working days’ of days-off during a 6 month-long placement and 24 working days'-off during a 12 month-long placement. It is up to you, how and when to use your holidays. Please make sure you discuss the dates with your project supervisor at least one month in advance of your departure which will enable your supervisor to adjust/confirm the availability accordingly.
