Resumo: Volunteer Center is non-profit volunteer organization. It was established in 2000. Its mission is to develop volunteering, to increase the quality of life in the community and to build civil society. Nowadays the Center provides number of services and activities:
1. Resource center offering services for Volunteering. Volunteer Centre in Banská Bystrica is one of the 6 active volunteer Centers in Slovakia. Center is also a member of the Platform of Volunteer Centers and Organizations in Slovakia. As a service center we provide services for organizations which work with volunteers and for people who want to volunteer. Our role is to match them. We help people to choose the right organization and also we help organizations choose the right volunteer. We are running on-line database of volunteer organizations and opportunities on our web page. We also assist with the creation of volunteer programs and volunteer management to the organizations that want to apply but don´t have enough experience.
2. Promotion of volunteering and volunteer organizations. Since the establishment of the Volunteer Center the promotion of volunteering is our main and regular activity. We do campaigns, workshops and discussion clubs about volunteering. We are coordinator of annual Volunteer days in Banská Bystrica Region since 2009. We organize Volunteer Week in Banská Bystrica Region since 2013. Our main aim of organizing promotion activities is to increase information about volunteering and encourage more people to be active.
3. Provision of training and education in volunteer management. We educate professionals on how to plan volunteer programs and manage volunteers in different organizations. We also provide consultancy for organizations in planning volunteer programs. We offer supervision for coordinators of volunteer programs and volunteers.
4. Recognition of volunteers/volunteering. We organize annual activities which target increasing the status of volunteering. During the month of December we organize annual event called "Srdce na dlani"- to show the importance and value of volunteers in Banská Bystrica Region.
5. Research and publication about activities focused on volunteering, but also on youth policy and youth work. In these areas we cooperate with many experts, mainly form Matej Bel University.
6. Implementation of our volunteer programs:
- Mentoring program “Lean on me”. The volunteer program “Lean on me” is a mentoring program based on the philosophy of the Big Brothers - Big Sisters Program. It is based on friendship relation between a volunteer and a child. Regular meetings are focused on development of social skills, self-confidence, autonomy, responsibility of children with special needs.
- Program targeted on unemployed youth VOLWEM.
- Seniors volunteering at the University Library – this project aims to involve senior volunteers from Banska Bystrica into the volunteering and life of the library. Project started in 2013.
- Volunteering of High School Students –project that started in 2013.CD created the methodology for high schools and implemented it in several schools. Target groups are young people between 15-19, their schools and teachers.
- Service learning program. CD cooperate with Matej Bela University on implementation of courses with service learning philosophy.
7. CD is accredited as Hosting as well as Sending organization for EVS. It was registered in 2011 implemented several projects (youth exchange, hosting and sending of volunteers). We are one of the few organizations that is offering these services in our region. We also have long term international partners that we always seek to cooperate.

The Volunteer Center in Banská Bystrica cooperates very closely with Matej Bel Univesity in Banská Bystrica, mainly with Faculty of Education. We have many common projects and the University has provided immense support to the organization by facilitating the use of our organization’s office space within the infrastructure of the university. The CD is also cooperating with municipality and other NGOs in the region.

Perfil: Age: 18-30

Tarefas: Our project activities are focused on promoting volunteerism in the region. Volunteers will be part of our team and participate on 2 big annual volunteer campaigns (Volunteer week and Heart on Sleeve award) and volunteer programs that are connecting volunteers needs and volunteer oportunities (database of volunteer opportunities, mentoring programs). We believe in service learning so our volunteers are always encouraged to find needs in the community and react on them with their individual projects. And of course, we create the personal development plan and reflect it regurarly. In this Volunteer project, I would like to try out the new model of work. We have good network of various NGOs in the city that can mostly voluntary based and they are missing resources to develop their own volunteer programs. We have the knowledge in the center and with the help of ESC volunteer, that will observe their work we can help them to develop the volunteer program for them. According to my experience, this seems very realistic to make in 12 months with the right volunteers of course.
