The organisation San Tomás is a non-profit NGO of public use. We collaborate with public and private entities to carry out our mission: improve the quality of life of people with mental disability and their family.
The Centre Riudeperes is a residence and day centre of the organisation with staff members from different countries, religions and cultures.
Since its beginning, we have local volunteers who participate and collaborate in the different activities. We are currently motivated to host volunteers from other cultures and/or countries and we consider that we have the needed capacity and interest.
We are interested in the project because it favours understanding and personal and cultural enrichment.
As host organisation, we commit to establish and use all technical and training measures, to asure an appropriate, optimal learning process, continuous, individual evaluation and counselling (by mentors). Our idea is that volunteers carry out their tasks and activities with the total support of the professionals of the centre and thus manage their motivation and participation in the different activities, in the immediate environment and with the staff in the centre.
Perfil: -Motivation and interest to participate in the project and have this experience with us. Motivation is a must. Teamwork skills Capacity to adapt to changes, flexibility, tolerance towards changes in the normal dynamics of the centre Initiative skills and capacity to make proposals Positive attitude Open, receptive person with a global vision of things Responsible, mature person, commited with work Communication skills and ability to relate with others Motivated for attention to people Experience in attending people with mental disability is an asset. Basic skills of Spanish or Catalan are an asset, as the target group have difficulties to express and understand.
Tarefas: Our EVS volunteers will have the opportunity of knowing how a centre for people with mental disabilities works and what it is done in it, a public centre managed by a non-profit organisation. They will learn basic matters about the attention of people in the centre, as well as behaviour matters. They will receive continuous training, as well as support and counselling from the technicians. They will meet people from Catalonia and establish friendships with them, as their work involves direct contact with many professionals of different ages. The role of the volunteers is very important for the centre, as they will support the people attending the users directly and/or coordinating activities, though they will never assume direct responsibilities. Volunteering is very valuable for social entities such as ours, working with leisure or other fields. Specific activities they will carry out: Activities related with the assistance to users: volunteers will support professionals with the personal hygiene, dressing, eating,... as well as doing everything considered necessary for the quality of life of the residents. Didactic activities: volunteers will support professionals in some activities (walks with users, artherapy, equitherapy...), apart from receiving the needed training, working with the individual aims for each resident in all fields. Leisure and community activities: volunteers may do their own proposals for their free time. Their proposals will be taken in consideration and will be discussed in the weekly coordination meetings. They will participate and support the professionals in the leisure activities of the centre and those in the community (one-day trips,...) Volunteers will support with direct attention professionals and/or coordinators when there are activities in the centre or in the community (during the week or on weekends). Volunteers may participate in all staff meetings and in the training given by the centre, and so obtain the corresponding assistance certificate. Participation: 35 h/week; on weekdays or weekends (volunteers shall participate in weekend activities). Free days: 2/week (not always weekends).
Horário: 35 h/week; on weekdays or weekends (volunteers shall participate in weekend activities). Free days: 2/week (not always weekends).
Condições: As a base for risk prevention, volunteers will be informed about the organisation, as well as the users, so they can carry out their tasks better and the integration process is easier.
Volunteers will be received following the WELCOME PROTOCOLE, so they feel accepted and supported in every moment, especially during the first 3 months.
Volunteers will have a mentor taking care of their welfare.
Weekly, during the first quarter, and fortnightly during the rest of the project, the mentor will do a monitoring/ evaluation with volunteers of the process: adaptation to the centre and work, needs of volunteer to carry out tasks (and offer any possible resources), personal feelings (with the colleagues and users),... They will receive continuous technical support to carry out the tasks and activities, that is, their work.
The mentor will make sure that volunteers carry out support tasks and never assume direct responsibilities.
