The main theme of activities will be “Democratic values”. ESC volunteers support children & youth to understand some basic notions about different forms of government, types of elections, political parties, political ideologies or voting. The aim of these activities & circumscribed public events shall promote active involvement in the ruling of the country, understanding the implication of non-involvement.
Primary school children will learn basic notions regarding the democratic processes of election and different forms of government. Secondary school children will be taught some in-depth aspects concerning political ideologies/parties. High-school children will also have some case studies and actively participate in debates on political themes discussed during the activities.
Lessons learnt from the historical lowest turnout of 20.41% in the "Referendum" to change our constitution, that took place on October 6-7 2018, showed a campaign with false topics that divided families, communities & the Romanian society. Issues like defining the “traditional family” as a union only between a man and a woman, reducing the rights of the (sexual) minorities, claiming autonomy from the European Union, stirred nationalistic & xenophobic waves within the society that reached the European Commission & the Parliament of the European Union, finding Romania off-side the European game in a league with the illiberal regimes from Poland & Hungary.
Hate speech against the LGBT community & racist propaganda have been widely used by the regime, most of the political parties, churches and some journalists, raising serious questions on the status of democracy and the rule of law in Romania.
Judging on the above mentioned premises, the odds are high for perpetrating hate speech & discrimination to secure votes in future elections. Results of the European elections in May 2019 shall be discussed and will be a solid basis for debates & activities that promote peace, tolerance, democracy & active European citizenship.
Also education for democratic & civic involvement for the upcoming Presidential elections in November 2019 in Romania.
