Resumo: On the 31st of January 2001 police established a unique children and youth club. The main task of this club was early prevention of drug addiction and criminality by rendering social, psychological, material help and organizing leisure time activities for of children and teenagers. Founder of the Club is Vilnius County Police Headquarters.
The organization now consists of 3 branches (children social care centre in Grigiskes, the other children day care centre in Justiniskes and Open youth centre “Bazė” which joint owner is also Vilnius municipality). All three centres are located in two different areas of Vilnius.
1) Grigiskes children day/social care centre is located in the remote district of Vilnius. The centre is placed in the building of secondary school and invites 20 children or teenagers. The EVS volunteer will be invited to become a part of the children day care centre activities. Volunteer directly will work with the children and teenagers with the help of the social workers and local volunteers.
2) Justiniskes children day/social care centre is located in Vilnius. The centre is placed in the police station building and invites 40 children or teenagers. The EVS volunteer will be invited to become a part of the children day care centre activities. Volunteer directly will work with the children with the help of the social workers and local volunteers. The children and teenagers come to day care centre every day after school. After school activities start at 12 am and ends at 18 pm.
3) Open youth centre “Bazė” (Base) suggests open evenings for 14-29 years old young people on Mondays - Fridays from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Youth centre is located on the first floor of the building which used to be a police office few years ago. Now the space is adapted to fit to youth needs. Through the activities of the youth centre we try to provide young people a safe space, where they can spend their leisure time with less risk of violence, drugs or harassment, having a place to use their energy in a creative and conscious direction. Lack of safe place for the young people we see as an important social problem. There are plenty of clubs, where consuming alcohol and drugs is not controlled, as well as nearly no institution makes an effort to help young people reinforcing and accepting every young person. We try to support youngsters in change towards more constructive lifestyle and behaviour.
Perfil: There are no specific requirements for the volunteers: generally they must be self-motivated, willing to take on new challenges, and open to working with people of all backgrounds and cultures, dynamic, versatile, good mood, flexible, with self-initiative. We do not identify ourselves as teachers, the main idea about this is to be able to find the positive sense in every experience. When changing the culture you get many challenging things to learn: to understand different cultural codes, the values of special group of people you deal with, how the way of thinking and the lifestyle is influenced by the material norms of the country, the language, etc.
Age: 18-30
Tarefas: Volunteers will have a proactive role, assisting the other members of the team, which are already running this project and will help them in their tasks, by taking part in the carrying out activities with children and youth, having always the necessary support, training, orientation in order to plan activities.
Volunteers will have different tasks according the place he will be volunteering:
1) Grigiskes children day care centre. The volunteer will learn how to work in a team, work with kids and teenagers, and how to solve various problems. The main tasks of the volunteer at to make sure, together with the worker of the center, that the children have various activities (every day after lunch till 6 pm.), learn new things, and most importantly, increase children's motivation for any activity. Besides the serious stuff, club also organizes various celebrations, parties and other fun stuff for the kids, so the volunteer will have an opportunity to organize some kind of celebration for children. Grigiškes day center is a great place for proactive person and the one who is seeking to realize his ideas.
2) Justiniškes community day center is for the children from 1st to 7th class, it means age of children is 7-14 years old. The Volunteer should be highly motivated, patient to be able to see the small positive changes in kids’ lives. Also it’s important to understand that you can be this small but positive change in child life. In this child day care center volunteer working hours will be five days per week from 13:00 till 16:00. Usually at 15:00 we have lunch and after that starts different activities like arts, ceramics, dancing lessons, sports, movie evenings etc. The main tasks for volunteer is to help with children homework’s, helping more intensively in areas where he/she feels more comfortable (for instance: English language tutoring, Math's, Geography, etc.), but also motivating them to study and to complete their objectives. The volunteer together with social worker have responsibility for creating dynamics of occupation of free time, through the realization of games and group dynamics, cooking workshops, fashion shows, photos exhibitions, thematic conversations, preparation of various celebrations. Justiniškes children day center is great opportunity for creative, open-minded person to share own ideas and realize them here.
3) Open youth centre “Bazė”. Here the Volunteer will learn how to work in the team and will be part of the Youth Centre team of workers. He/she will have meetings with the staff and other volunteers, to know, what is going on in the centre, to discuss difficult situations and to create new projects. The role of the volunteer in this centre has two characters: assistance in the activities, organized by the other people and embodying own ideas the volunteer may have (musical, artistic skills are strongly recommended). It is very important that the volunteer would be interested in open youth work and responsibly take his/her role, initiative is very welcome. Some youngsters might be the same age as the volunteer, thus it requires extra self-consciousness of the volunteer. The main volunteers’ tasks: - participation in the staff meetings, where the accomplished activities will be evaluated and the further ones planned. In these meetings we share tasks, reflect personal situations in the project and discuss new opportunities. Also, after every open evening we create a safe space for sharing and reflecting day, feelings and ideas. Furthermore, we treat volunteers as our team members so they would have a possibility to participate in cases analysis. It is very important for whole team to communicate and have the same ideas about harder cases as much as to know how to react on them or in different situations; - activities with the young people during the opened evenings, five days per week (16:00-19:00). During the opened evenings we sometimes have concerts or workshops, but sometimes young people just come over to have a tea, to chat or to play board games; - distribution of the information about the activities of the youth centre. We try to spread information about events, workshops and general activities of “Bazė”. It would be helpful if the volunteer would take part in this process, in form of making flyers, information booklets, handing them out in the street. So work in office is a part of the volunteer’s tasks. Some work such as administrating social networks, mail, creating posters have to be done in the office; - preparing the space for the activities, whether it’s outside or inside; - cooperation with other organizations and people, who somehow participate in the activities of the youth centre; - implementing their own ideas: workshops, parties, concerts, so on. Open youth centre is a perfect place for self-initiatives and creations.
