Resumo: The project aims to bring youth together from different backgrounds and different parts of Romania and Europe, to give them a deep appreciation of the relationship created between the built and the natural environment and to help them understand the relevance of local identity and culture. All these would happen through hands-on work by contributing to the rehabilitation of a 100 hundred years manor, using local construction techniques and materials.

The project will mostly take place in a small town in Romania. 4 volunteers will take part at the project, coming from two partner countries. The stage will last 5 months, from 01.07.2017 until 30.11.2017. The activities of the stage will adjust according to the seasons’ climate and include outdoor and indoor work. The project promotes in a high degree education regarding traditional architecture and the benefits for preserving old traditional houses in the countryside.

The volunteers will learn about traditional architecture, natural building and sustainable living. They will be able to discover the characteristics of the local community and they will interact a lot with the locals, especially with the young people, including youth with fewer possibilities and persons with disabilities. Together they will have the chance of organizing social events, improving their own communication abilities, learning the most efficient techniques for house restoration, using and reusing natural and locally available materials. In this way the project aims to raise the awareness within the local community about the importance of protecting the built heritage.
They will also explore the surroundings by bike in order to get to know better what is the cultural background of the region and to learn more about the similarities and differences between cultures.

During the stage the volunteers will take part at practical courses about specific local traditional materials and techniques (traditional structures, brick and stone masonry, lime and earth mortars, wood window frames, etc) and about the natural building approach (building with cob, straw bails and earth, green roofs etc). The volunteers will be able to develop their team-working skills and they will discover their own leadership abilities.

To ease the process, during the project activities many non-formal and informal techniques will be implemented.
At the end of ARO the partners wish to develop a model of engaging local young people by saving Romanian cultural heritage, a model that can be replicated in other communities around the country.
