Resumo: The Psychiatric Centre in Duffel is a well known big centre/clinic for adults with different psychological and psychiatric problems (from people with personal problems to severe psychiatric disorders). For all different types there are different departments with other therapies and caring techniques. Each year about 1700 people apply for an intake from which most of them have chosen freely to be treated in the clinic. (only 150 of them are forced intakes) The total capacity is 600 beds.
Duffel is a big village in the middle of the province of Antwerp with 16.500 inhabitants. It is located in between two cities called Mechelen and Lier and very easily accesible by public transport (bus or train). Duffel is surrounded by small communities and functions for them as a reagional centre for education with several schools and as a regional centre for health-care with a general hospital and this centre for psychiatric care. The psychiatric centre is located in a big property in the middle of the centre where also the general clinic, schools, other caring centres are situated. (It is almost a village on its own)
The Psychiatric Centre which has over 600 beds and 1700 intakes is installing possibilities for computer and internt access for the patients. The international volunteers will help in the continuation of this activity and will help to introduce the patients to the world of IT.
The Psychiatric Centre in Duffel is a centre for adults with different psychological and psyciatric problems : Centre for severe psychiatric problems, clinical psychotherapy, structural therapy and re-integration, complex and longterm caring, geronto psychiatry, epilepsy, day-clinic... All over the different departments there are computers installed and there is a project running to connect most of them to the network so that they can be used to access the Internet. The aim is to help the patients to get introduced in computering, e-mailing and internet and to set up programs for them. Since there are many patients and the population is changing constantly, there are many possibilities for different activities related to internet and computers. The basics of the program are established with the volunteers during the first years of the poject: the infrastructure is in place and there already is a culture and set rules of internet activities by patients. The concept is clear and well laid out. But every year changes are made in the way things are done depending on the wishes and capacities of the volunteers.
The volunteers work only with patients who are socially and mentally capable to participate on the PIC project. He/She will not be in contact with patients with severe or risc pathology. At every time the volunteers are guided by professional nurses or counsellors and are not involved in any assisting medical or caring activities. The volunteer is supervised by the staff-menber in charge of the informatization projects of the psychiatric centre. The staf-member supervises the whole of this project and meets the volunteer on a regular base and is available in case of. On the actual location of the activities a team-member is designated as a supervisor for that specific activity.
Perfil: Volunteers should have some knowledge of computers : surfing the internet, E-mail and preferably also MS-Word. No expert-knowledge is required. The volunteer will learn how to explain in a simple way the basics of the use of internet, e-mail and MS-Word. Eagerness to learn and to share knowledge is a big asset. The volunteer can learn a lot by browsing the help-function and searching FAQ's.
Volunteers should have respect for all patients in the Centre and like to work with them. They should be open to work with different kind of people with psychological or psychiatric problems. They should act openly and easlily in quite a big and complex organisation and infrastructure.
AFS, the coordinating host organisation, strongly believes in the intercultural learning aspect of an EVS-experience. Therefore, the volunteer will be living with a volunteer host family, as we believe this is the best introduction to Flemish culture and a great opportunity to integrate in the local community. Candidates should be willing to share in the host family's daily life (spend some free time with them, occasionally join the family on activities outside the house, eat together, give a helping hand in the household... ) and should be motivated to live with and learn about Flemish people of different ages and opinions. They should also be willing to adapt to the local eating habits.
Tarefas: -First of all, the volunteer will be involved in thinking about how he (she) will contribute to the concept. This could involve assisting the IT-staffmember in installing extra-computers. The way the project evolves very much depends on the capabilities, the vision, the goal of the volunteer. The volunteer has a chance to turn this project into his (her) own project, so there is a lot of room for input by the volunteer. This will take an average of about 20% of the time: thinking, implementing, evaluating, adapting - and communicating about this with the mentor.
The volunteer will be mainly involved in educating the patients and adapting the project. He will be assisting the IT-staffmember of the centre in teaching the patients. 1) how to work with the computer 2) how to handle the internet, 3) how to use the E-mail. He will do this in 2 locations: 1) several departments of the hospital (every department asks a different approach) 2) patient house 'Passant' where former patients stay before they move back into society. This is a sort of community house where also one multimedia computer is available.
The volunteer will also supervise the use of internet by the patients in order to assist them in case of 'how to' questions. The patients can simply come to the multimedia computers and use the internet and E-mail. The volunteer will help out and guide where necessary.
Evening work: now and then there will be evening work: This is to be decided on together with the volunteer and is always compensated for during the week. The volunteer will be free during the day when he works in the evening and this will be restricted to a maximum of 2 times a month.
Horário: 7 hours a day, 5 days a week (35 hours a week). The volunteer will get 12 free days. The volunteer needs to consult the project about the exact dates that he/she would like to take days off. And he/she should also take in account the dates of special activities of the project .
The coordinating host organisation AFS will organise language courses. The volunteer will receive 30 hours of Dutch lesson spread over the 8 or 10 first weeks of the project.
Condições: On the other hand, we guarantee a family that is interested to learn about your culture and background and that respects your values and beliefs. Living in a host family is an excellent opportunity for both the participant and the family to broaden their cultural horizons! Our sending partners will emphasize this host family stay reality to all potential volunteers and will provide enough information and a chance to talk with someone with experience with living in a host family. All our sending partners have a lot of experience with host family stay programs and can provide all necessary information about it. The sending partners will ask all candidates who already know they prefer to live independently, to refrain from applying for this project.
Respect for privacy and professional secrecy ar very important. It is not allowed to smoke within the premisses. The volunteer has to respect the rules about safety, hygiene and coöperation, like every employee. These rules are explained the first days of the stay.
The project will assign a personal mentor / contact person to the participant, so he/she can always ask this person for help or guidance.
AFS, as coordinating host organisation will give every project and every participant a local contact person, that will stay in contact and will regularly ask for an evaluation to improve the situation for all parties. In case of emergency, AFS has an emergency-mobile phone, which can be reached 24h/24h, in case of emergencies.
