Tarefas: As we believe it very important that the European volunteer has a clear framework in OTB, we have chosen to involve the volunteer in our physical department. This department consists of 'movement' (organising the movement and sports activities in the centre) and the physiotherpy department (therapeutic movement exercises, movement aids… ). In this way, the volunteer will cooperate with a small group of people, which will facilitate the continuity. Another advantage is that language does not play such a big role in this department. This will be an advantage for the volunteer, especially in the beginning. The volunteer can take his time to learn Dutch and the language barreer will be more easily overcome.
We expect the volunteer to assist in the activities organised by the physical department. This means that the volunteer will help coaching sports activities (dance, net ball, swimming… ) together with the department's staff. On other moments, he can help the people from physiotherapy(eg. accompany people on a cycling tour). Of course there will be some room for initiatives from the volunteer. However, we think it is important that in the beginning the volunteer takes the time to simply join the physical department's activities and to get to know the working of OTB and its specific residents.
Sometimes there will be activities that go beyond the physical department: a big trip, a party involving all the departments… Since everyone in the centre is involved in these activities, we expect the volunteer to do so too. However, he will always assist the staff of the physical department.
Some examples of possible activities are:
- Accompanying the sports activities during the day, from the physiotherapy as well as the movement department.
- Accompanying free sports activities during the lunch break (our residents have some free time before the second part of their working day starts. Some of them like to do sports during this break. The volunteer may be aksed to keep an eye on these activities or to join - eg. if a resident would like to play badminton… )
- For activities that go beyond the physical department, the volunteer may be asked to help preparing the material, to join a trip as an extra companion… this depending on the nature of the activity.
The coordinating host organisation AFS will provide the language lessons. The first 10 weeks, the volunteer will receive 3 hours of lessons per week. After this initial course, the volunteer can choose to take an additional public language course in his own region. In almost all cases AFS will reimburse the costs for extra lessons. Exceptions are certain public courses that are much more expensive than the ususal ones (for example: university courses).
Horário: The volunteer will be expected to come to OTB every work day from 9 h tot 17 h to join the physical department. Most days will consist of two blocks (morning and afternoon) with a lunch break in between. These hours may vary if a special or big activity is planned. The volunteer will be informed about this beforehand.
A typical work week would look like this:
Monday through Thursday:
Morning and afternoon: working at the atelier, backery, making candles, working at the garden, paper, wood, creativity, clay, textile, saloon, working in the 'auti'-place.
Friday:
Morning: working at the atelier, backery, making candles, working at the garden, paper, wood, creativity, clay, textile, saloon, working in the 'auti'-place.
Afternoon: relaxation activities
During the weekends the volunteer is free and can visit the region or other parts of Belgium. The volunteer will receive two holidays per month, it will be discussed with the contact person at work when to take them.
Condições: Each volunteer in our organisation signs a contract that stipulates which tasks the volunteer would like to do and for which period. One coach is responsible for the volunteers, and is the contact person for both the volunteers and the staff regarding volunteer work.
The volunteer will get 2 free days each month. The volunteer needs to consult the project about the exact dates that he/she would like to take days off. And he/she should also take in account the dates of special activities of the project .
All volunteers will be living in a host family close to the project. The family hosts a participant on a voluntary basis. They provide shelter, meals and a warm home. AFS Flanders is divided in several chapters with a local group of motivated volunteers. This personal approach makes it possible to easily follow up on the volunteer's situation.
The coordinating host organisation AFS will organise language courses. The volunteer will receive 30 hours of Dutch lessons spread over the 8 or 10 first weeks of the project.
