Resumo: The museum is established in two buildings of the renovated Castle: the palace and the arsenal. The museum is a permanent, public, budgetary institution that serves to the public and reflects the development of the society. The most important activity of the museum is to collect, preserve, study, exhibit and popularise material and spiritual cultural heritage (such as expositions, exhibitions publications, various events, digitization and advertising of digital content) of the region.

There are 45 employees. The museum consists of several departments. The visitors of the museum are mostly organized groups, as well as individuals and families. The major parts of tourists come from Lithuania and Latvia. We also welcome people from Belarus, Russia, Poland, Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and other countries (more than 40,000 visitors per year).Every year the museum organizes lots of popular events such as the Night of Museums, various fairs, presentations of books and exhibitions and classical music concerts. We also attract visitors by offering special services: a gala wedding ceremony in Birzai Castle, educational programmes for adults on various occasions (anniversaries, a bachelor party, etc.).The other important activity is scientific. We organize exhibitions, publications, scientific conferences and discussions. We also collect exhibits, describe and study them.There is an archaeologist who organises archaeological expeditions to the town of Birzai and its suburbs, researches the territory of Birzai Castle, the old town, tumulus and mounds. He also prepares the findings for exhibitions, preservation or enriching the funds of the museum.
