Resumo: The Lower Silesian Association for Children and Young People with Cerebral Palsy "Ostoja" was founded in 1993 by a group of parents of disabled children. Currently it takes care of almost 500 disabled children and youth in our region. Our main aim is to help families upbringing disabled children in many areas of life: education, rehabilitation, therapy and creating equal rights and life opportunities in Polish society. In five centres we run in Wroclaw we employ professional staff who performs all kinds of therapy (physiotherapy, hipotherapy, logopedy, arttherapy, psychological, music therapy etc.) We also offer professional advice to parents of disabled children and organise trainings and meetings with parents to inform them about new methods of therapy. We are engaged in many projects that we work on together with volunteers, e.g. organising various parties and daytrips for children and youth. Every year throughout summer we organise two-week rehabilitation camps in different parts of Poland for our clients and their families. Apart from the doctors and professionals, local and international volunteers often go with us and work as animators. Such camps are often the only possible form of summer vacation for families of disabled children (due to high costs of this kind of camp). Another target group are mentally retarded young people (16-35 year olds). Our activities allow this most neglected group of the disabled spend their time constructively and feel that they are not redundant in the society.

Wroclaw is the capital of the Lower Silesian region and one of the biggest cities in Poland with the population of about 750 000. It is situated in the south-western part of Poland, not far from the German and Czech borders. The big part of the region, south from Wroclaw are mountainous areas, many of them being Poles´ favourite holiday destinations. The Lower Silesia region was Polish, Czech, Austro-Hungarian and German, and at different points of its history and therefore its cultural and historic heritage is multicultural and very impressive. Wroc³aw itself is a beautiful city with many historic sites and very friendly atmosphere. It is a lively academic town and hosts many cultural and arts festivals. Our Association's centres are spread around Wroclaw, but the main is situated in the very centre of the town, five minute walk from the Central Railway Station. Therefore the transport links are excellent, and many important points are within walking distance. It is accessible for wheelchairs and easy to get to, because these are the basic criteria for our clients.

For last 10 years we used to host around 20 EVS volunteers from different European countries. The profile of the volunteers was always differed - starting from very young and unexperience persons, ending up on young professionals graduated of social studies. All of them found their comfortable place to work, and had a lot of satisfaction. The two advantages of our placement are: 1) our professional staff is always there, ready for help in any case, 2) a young volunteer can feel really needed, can feel sense of dedicating part of her/his energy for people who need them so much. And they receive a lot in return- people's smile, closeness and friendship.

Our organization consists of several parts, each of them has it's own profile:

Different skills and interests can be developed here: sports, artistic (art-therapy, ceramic), dance project, fashion project, cultural, communication, also work support, psychologist support.
Within the activities the groups visit different exhibitions, movie, theater etc.

Perfil: Because of the special character of the work the volunteers should be flexible, patient, tolerant and responsible. They should be able to loose their emotional and psychical barriers and fear in contact with mentally disabled persons. The most important thing is that they are able to show the young people they will work with that each of them is special, worthy and unique and - through the activities they will perform - help them move from dependence to independence.
During the recruitment together with coordinating organisation we will try to look throgh as much application as possible and to choose the volunteers according the EVS profiles we've defined. We will discuss the candidates with all the people who work in our centre and with thous who will work with volunteers directly.

Tarefas: The first week after arriving will be entirely dedicated to introduction training on how to work with mentally retarded people. Volunteers will help by preparing materials for activities and running the activities. Part of the tasks should be also to help by dressing, feeding, cleanning during the workshops etc. The choice activities they will perform will be left to the volunteer's interests. Due to challenging target group, volunteer will always choose freely the activities she/he would like to assist or perform. Volunteer will never stay alone with the group. After some time, when volunteer will get involved into the therapeutic work and know Polish language enough, she or he can join the team meetings, which happen every day before the activities start (7.30-8.15 a.m.). A young volunteer can not only learn about cerebral palsy therapy and methods, but first of all learn about himself, her/his limits, possibilities and predispositions. There will also be short group integration trips in which volunteers will participate. During the summer volunteers will participate in two fourteen-day rehabilitation camps in different parts of Poland (at the seaside and at lakes, for example) where they will organise - together with Polish volunteers - spare time activities for children and young people. This will also be an excellent opportunity for volunteers to see and experience Polish holiday resorts. We also greatly encourage our volunteers that they sometimes meet with our clients outside work, so they could feel that they are friends with the volunteers. To avoid language gap we will encourage volunteers to master basic everyday Polish after arrival. Some individuals in our centre learn English or another foreign language and we will appreciate the volunteers´ attempts to have a language conversations with them. There are ten Polish volunteers working in the Centre. The EVS volunteer besides working together with them will be expected to organise an informal meetings in which they would exchange experiences with working with mentally disabled youth in different countries and learn from one another. Naturally volunteers are encouraged to dedicate some of their spare time to plan and prepare their own activities, with help of professionals. Especially welcome by the group members is to make a presentation about their country or teach a national song or dance or something else which will surely be a great fun. Every good idea will be most welcome.

As each of the centers has it's own profile, so the activities, proposed for volunteers could be also slitely different.
At The Rehabilitation-Educative Centre for Children with Deep Intellectual Handicap and at Local House of Mutual Aid they work with hard disabled children, so the work there is connected with help the special educators with their feeding, dressing, stimulating the kids etc.(mostly physical work).

In KLEKS they need help during occupation, someone can teach English there or make some artistic activities (own ideas are very welcome).
At Workshop of Occupational Therapy and Youth Rehabilitation-Therapy Center the volunteer will help therapists, work individually with more disable persons, going for the practice, teaching English, own ideas are welcome. Also going with participants to camps, trips, taking part in artistic festivals and projects.
