Resumo: The host organization is a company limited by guarantee, has charitable status and has a Board of Directors.
-The Community provides living, training and working opportunities for 26 adults and young people (over 18 years of age) with a variety of disadvantages. (Disability, mental health issues, family circumstances, etc.)
-There is one big and one small residential house and several workshops.
- Non-EVS volunteers also work in the project and there are 3 staff employed full time and 6 staff part-time.
- the organization has been working with volunteers since 1987 and with EVS volunteers since 1997. Almost all ex-volunteers keep in touch with the project and come back for visits. Some have become penpalls of our people with special needs, some have organised a holiday for them in their own country and some stayed in Ireland to work or study in this field. (currently 5 ex-volunteers live in the Kilkenny area).
The organization has a good track record of working succesfully with EVS volunteers,:
-Staff has lots of EVS experience; they are multi-cultural themselves.(Holland, Spain , Japan, Great Britain)
-There are lots of non-formal learning opportunities for volunteers.
-Most activities are done in groups, which is very beneficial for volunteer ‘s language development.
-Project is very flexible with opportunities for volunteers to have an own in-put and use their skills in projects they can develop themsleves.
-Opportunities to be involved in local festivals, the local school, with a Kilkenny based advocacy group, and to talk to Transition Year students about EVS.
-Mentors and professional counsellors are availble, but work outside the project.
-Induction period of 2 weeks and a disability-course (twice per month) in which volunteers get the opportunity to learn more about the work they do. Subjects: autism, epilepsy, downs syndrome., etc. Sessions consist of a more formal part, an artistic activity and group discussion.
-Experienced English teachers availble.
Perfil: Young enthiusiastic people who are willing to learn new skills, interested in including people with fewer opportunities, love working in a team and enjoy being with people.
Interst in the activities we are doing; crafts, woodwork, organic gardening, outdoor sport
Good sense of humor, patience and willingness to communicate not only with the spoken word: we use signs, visuals, photo, film and pictures to assist communication with some of our people.
Initiative and flexibility are important when you are working with people.
A medium level of English is paramount when you are working with people who have allready communication problems.
Age: 17-30
Tarefas: Volunteers assist in the different daily workshops (descripted in Project Environment), they take turns in cooking for the household, cleaning, shopping etc.
Volunteers work one evening per week and do some leisure activities with the people in the house. In lieu of this they are free one morning.
