Resumo: The city is a town of 17'000 inhabitants. It is located in the region of Valais, at the foot of the Alps. It’s close from Montreux (20 km), Lausanne (40 km) and Geneva (70 km). The language spoken in the region is french. The region is very frequented by tourists for skiing, walking, climbing and other holiday activities, in winter and summer.
The resident population is swiss but a lot of immigrants are present in the city and are enriching the cultural diversity. Since a long time, Monthey is implicated in all the questions of integration and has developed several actions to integrate the migrants in the town and in the region.
The city is known for its chemical industry that has contributed to the rapid development of the city (the population doubled within twenty years).
Interestingly, the city profiles its image in the development of the cultural sector, which is very active and appreciated by a large number of people in the region and even in Switzerland.

Aims : Our core activity is to present - 40 different shows / plays each year to the audience in our Theatre. We are active in performing arts and music. We try to present a broad selection of the best artists from the region and from Europe. As we are a public institution, we are concerned with the access to art of cultural minorities, young -and poorly educated people. We are collaborating with several associations implicated in education and integration.

Regular activities : organization belongs to the cultural department of the city. The other cultural institutions of the city are : the library, the concert venue, the gallery, the music and contemporary art festivals. The Theatre and all these institutions are working closely together. We do organize a lot of public events, like theatre, dance, music, conferences and readings.

Team : In the theatre, five people work in the adminstration sector (communication, promoting events, accounting, direction) and four persons on stage (light and sound designers, technicians). In the cultural department, 2 persons work at the concert venue, 10 at the library, 1 at the gallery, 2 at the Festivals. 20 volunteers of the city and of the region collaborate at the organization regularly and at the concert venue.

Perfil: We are very open -concerning his/her profile. We would like someone who is widely curious in arts and likes the field of culture. Ideally, he/she should be interested in often changing tasks and functions -. He/she -should be comfortable with meeting a lot of different - people (artists, public, press).
The organizaion, as coordinating organization who is working in the field of young exchanges, will support us with the recruitment, as well as with the accessibility of EVS to all young people
- The volunteer would be living with a Swiss host familiy
- Work pensum would be around 80%
- Duration of the activity: 6 or 12 months

Tarefas: The organization is a cultural institution with a lot of different activities in it. We are looking for people with new ideas, with different perspectives to enrich our daily work. We are also very invested developing the relationships between culture and schools, culture and immigrants, culture and tourism. We think that this program matches perfectly our own objectives and can be very interesting, very formative for young people coming from other countries.

Offer to the volunteer
The volunteer will accomplish several tasks that he/she certainly never did before, mostly developing his skills in the social relations. But principally, we want him/her to acquire a great sense of autonomy and responsibility (under our supervision). In accordance with the needs and the personal interests of the volunteer, we will define with him the activities he will doing in the Theatre.

The role of the volunteer
The volunteer will be working in the organization and also in the other institutions of the cultural department: the library, the concert venue, the gallery and the art festivals. First, she/he will have a role of assistant of the collaborators in their tasks. Rapidly, we want her/him to be a force of proposition.

Examples of activities
Reception of the artists ; interviews of the artists for social media- ; reception of the public ; ticketing ; promoting events ; assisting technical staff…

We have weekly meetings with all the staff in order to organize the work and we speak about every problem or success which occurred. We are careful about the quality of the human relations because a good atmosphere between people influences greatly the quality of our work and of the reception of the audience.
In case of a severe crisis that cannot be resolved within the Theatre or if the volunteer needs an exterior advice, the procedure is to refer to the department of human resources of the city. It’s a guarantee for the volunteer to have a professional appreciation of the crisis and a professional way to solve it.
- Each volunteer is assigned to a mentor (outside the project) who is there to support the volunteer during his/her stay in Switzerland and help him/her with any questions, concerns, request, etc. The mentor will be proposed to the organization.
- The organization will chose within the institution a person of contact for the volunteer. This person is in charge to introduce and accompany the volunteer in the practical aspects of his stay.
- The volunteers are supplied with emergency phone numbers which they can call 24/7 in case of an emergency.
