Resumo: During the summer activities for the EVS volunteers participating in the short term service the main elements will consist of non-formal education with children, cultural diversity, creativity.

Perfil: The volunteers hosted in our projects are desired to be passionate about learning and education, love working with children and youth, and show an open minded attitude towards different cultures. Also, we wish they are flexible with the activities they take part in and willing to integrate in their host community and socialize with other youth, as they will work in an international environment and part of a multinational team. There will be no special requirements apart from being positive, energetic, outgoing, communicative, and at least a basic level of English as they will be serving as part of an international team, and some linguistic common ground is desirable. The portrait of the volunteer mentioned above might be helpful for orientation, however it is not a strict requirement.
Age:17-30

Tarefas: The two main activities will be Multicultural Europe and Discover Europe!

For the summer activities the 10 EVS volunteers will have the opportunity to promote their countries through nonformal education with children. The volunteers will implement activities coordinated by our staff and will be given the chance to come with proposals and ideas according to their skills, experience and talents. The host organization has the experience and the staff to implement such activities, our organization having an international background and many successful activities already implemented.

The methods will be of nonformal education and we will use some of the methods that had a lot of success and that were good for the children and for the volunteers. We would also like to implement some new activities. Mainly we will have a collection of intercultural games, multicultural workshops on cooking, dance, music, traditions, workshops in arts and crafts, educational drama for children, forum and labyrinth theatre on topics of the volunteers’ choice, photovoice, treasure hunts for cultural awareness creativity, organizing talent shows and other activities adapted to the age group and to the needs of the participants. Being a short term service, we will prepare most of the activities in advance for the volunteers and their main task will be to assist and to help the children. Our volunteers will assist the coordinator and will work with members of the organization and with the staff of the organizations and institutions where we will have the activities. They will be always welcomed to come up with ideas, to make suggestions, to give feedback and to be an active part of the project. The language of the project will be English, so the volunteers will have the opportunity to improve their language skills easily. They will be accompanied by a person who will help them with translation in case this is needed.

The volunteers will come up with ideas on how to best represent and promote their countries and the children will experience the atmosphere of another country through games, dances, food, activities related to and representative for that country.

Through these activities filled with international spirit we will promote cultural awareness, tolerance and respect for diversity. All the activities will consist of nonformal education methods which will be promoted through the children and the staff of all the institutions the activities will take place in. Through the practice of outdoor activities and grassroots sports activities which will be implemented by the EVS volunteers we will promote healthy behaviours as well as inclusion by not marginalizing the children who have a lower progress and performance.

The Multicultural Europe programme will involve kindergarten children aged 3 to 6 years old. The volunteers will work with the children in our partner kindergartens with whom we have been working since 2011. Our partners are reliable, friendly and already used to the idea of working with international volunteers. Until now, the EVS volunteers have had a good time with the staff and especially with the children. There are about 50 children in each kindergarten that the volunteers will work with.
Another activity designed for the short term service is Discover Europe! in which we will use the great number of countries involved to imaginary travel to all of them and to discover their secrets directly from the people who represent them and who have lived there their entire lives.

In the framework of this activity we will travel with primary school children aged 6 to 12 years old and we will involve children who will not be able to leave the town during their summer break, children from some of our partner organizations who work in the social field and have in their organizations children without homes, families or other situations that lead to having fewer opportunities and also children from rural areas that not only they do not leave the village for vacation but they have to work most of the summer and are isolated. We have already started working with all these children since the autumn of 2013 or earlier and we intend on fighting against social exclusion and giving a chance to the ones that cannot help themselves.

Our imaginary trip will take place during the summer as during holidays most people leave their homes for a while in order to travel, discover places, meet new people, learn about other cultures, habits and ways of living. The children that we plan to involve in our project will meet people from 5 different countries, being able to travel and visit 5 European countries in one week. Instead of using a plane we will use our activity spaces and the currency for finding new information will be smiles, a good time, active involvement and the wish to be a part of the activities.
By preparing the volunteers for the service and by handing them all the relevant information about the project, our partners will help us make sure that they and the project will be well represented.
