Resumo: The Region is an autonomous community located in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula. The population is close to one and a half million inhabitants.The town which is the biggest and most important city in the Region. The town is a warm place and the tourism sector, mainly concentrated on the coast, is important.

The specific activities conducted by European volunteers will be mainly centralized in the campus, although there might be activities, either in one of the University facilities or in the office of a collaborating entity.

Perfil: The volunteer will have the following characteristics:

Older than 18 years

Sensitive people close to the university world who are not unaware to academic life and the needs of university members. Being a graduate is not especially needed.

Socially motivated and willing to learn how to manage activism and volunteering projects while getting involved in them.

Ideally have the social skills to work with students, and to conscientiously support the dissemination of information and development of activities for the university community.

An interest in disabilities; to have communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team. They will be tolerant and flexible, and sensitive to the reality of disabled people while still capable of encouragement of users of the Service.

If a volunteer has special needs, it is recommended that they fit the following profiles:

Hearing impairment: they do not require an Interpreter of Sign Language to carry out their duties.
Motor impairment: they are able to manipulate.
Visual impairment: they do not require Braille or to be accompanied when travelling.

Tarefas: The activities will be specifically detailed in each project, according to the particular needs at that point in time and the profile of the volunteer.

Some examples of these activities:

1. At the Service:

Take part in daily activities carried out by the Area for Attention to Disability (support and accompaniment of sensory impaired people, promotion of academic and working integration, as well as social integration of people with functional diversity).

Take part in activities of Local Volunteering to offer support to groups such as elderly people, accompaniment and/or school tutoring with children of low socio-economic backgrounds.

Collaborate in the activities carried out by the Area for International Volunteering; they may be administrative ones, such as the archive and registry of the volunteer exchange projects carried out by ADaV, or of another kind, such as collaboration with the Buddy Programme for welcoming and accompaniment of international students (Erasmus).

Collaborate in the activities of Volunteering on Campus such as University welcome, UMU Community Month (December), Open days for high school students, or events like the fun run.

The proposed activities would be from Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and one evening a week (5 hours), in which they would have to attend different formations offered to volunteer.

Also, it could have, throughout their stay, an activity weekend needing the support of University volunteering as a volunteer fair, a solidarity race, a collection of signatures, or any other similar activity.


2. At other services and/or Centres of the University:

Other Departments and/or Services of the University may offer projects and activities which can be carried out with the support of the European Voluntary Service, for example: support to student associations, student exchanges, sport, culture, leiusure and free time activities in the Social University Centre; they will be related to creating a sustainable campus, environment, etc.

In every activity they participate in, European volunteers will have a key role involving support and service for the University community.

There will be many learning opportunities and the chance to develop the following competencies:

To learn the situation of social economy at the local/regional/national level.

To learn the main institutions in the management of diversity, solidarity, and volunteering.

To learn projects useful for social and/or intercultural action.

To understand the role of public administration, social responsibility of universities, and the available social resources for every section of society.

To learn how to design and carry out processes for community interventions.

To develop strategies for public participation.

To improve social relations between different groups and people from the community.

To learn communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution techniques.

To improve intercultural competence.

To learn the reality of diversity by working with students with special needs.
