Resumo: The hosting organization is located in a small village with around 100 inhabitants, the first one of its kind in the world, where grown-up mentally handicapped people plus staff live. It has been described as a "microworld" where many activities are run and all the inhabitants take full part in them. The project runs and owns its own local store, greenhouses and other biological gardening during the summer months, weaving and carpentry workshops are also managed by the community. An own theatre group is active and some volunteers are interested to help and participate in those activities. The project strongly interacts with the local and national communities and this offers a great opportunity for the hosted volunteer to be part of the project, whose members understand themselves as part of an enlarged family, as well as the be exposed to Icelandic reality at large.

Transportation is not frequent from the town to the capital. The volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her fares out of the village if he/she wishes to travel during weekends and days off. The people who live in the town often go into the city and are willing to give the volunteers a lift.

The town is an isolated place, and even more during the winter and at the beginning of the stay when you have just arrived from a very different lifestile. But at the same time the town is a very good place to learn Icelandic very well, more than in the cities where almost everybody can and prefers to speak english.

Perfil: Age: 17-30

Tarefas: We are looking for a volunteer that would like to take part in forming a product line with food-processing team. At the moment the team produces jar products such as marmalades, chutney and salsa along with soups, spices and oils all from organically cultivated natural materials.

Its breads, cakes and pies are served in the cafeteria and sold in the café, the market and a few shops in the area. In addition to the current product line, there is continued development and new products are consistently added.
This opportunity could be suitable for a volunteer that has great interest in organic food production, knowledge about chutney making and eco-lifestyle.
