Resumo: The old valley is the biggest value of the Lithuanian central lowland landscape. It is like an open book of the river’s history. The river makes various loops here. Ample horseshoe-shaped remains of the old bed have formed as the riverbed changed in time. During the floods the overflows vastly and leaves much silt in the meadows of flooded banks forming numerous lakelets and ponds of irregular form. The landscape of the old valley has not been restructured much by human beings, and it is the heritage of post-glacial period. There have remained some communities of natural meadows in the valleys of the valley and its influents – rivulets. These are significant habitats, which are rapidly vanishing everywhere and which should be carefully protected. Rare kinds of plants are growing here – European bellflower, water germander, hollow corydale, military orchid. Butterflies - clouded apollos – are flying in some places. The mid river landscape reservation has been established for the preservation of natural and landscape values. The valley and its influents are full of secretive otters, beavers, many birds breed here.

Beside that we expect and believe that volunteers can make more advertisement for ecological education and environmental activities for local community and local people. Their staying and work in our Park will bring new ideas and new quality of the work and will make different daily work for our workers. We believe EVS can bring us lots of benefit as well as much experience, skills and knowledge we can give for each coming volunteer.
Environment for the voluntary activities: the environment where the volunteers will carry out their activities will be the regional park itself, direction (office) and the village itself as far as concerned the activities carried out by the Regional Park for the public, the tourists and the summer activities.
Geographical, social and economical environment:
The local community where the project will take place is the village of Lithuania. There are 16 villages. There are one catholic church, the basic school, 2 local shops, 1 kindergarten, post office and medical office. The main occupation of the local people is agriculture. The members of local community as well as the schoolchildren are very active in ecological programmes and projects. The local community is formed by 1000 inhabitants. The social component of the village is made of a consistent part of aged people.
The accommodation of the volunteers will be located about 25 km. from the city.

age: 17-30
Tarefas: Canoeing in the Water Tourism Route, excursions, Cognitive Tourist Routes, Tracks, Paths, Bicycles roads, educational programmes the main activities offered to the visitors in the regional park. In all these mentioned activities volunteers can take place, help to prepare the routes, clean environment, assist for the tour organisers and so on. Volunteers will work 5-6 hours a day. First 3 months they will also have Lithuanian language lessons.
The main activities in the regional park as in all Regional parks in Lithuania are mainly maintenance, research, monitoring. The main role of EVS volunteers in the organization will be assitance as the volunteer wont be professional. But in some fields volunteers can propose and implement their own initiatives. All depends on the individual volunteer and their interest to be active and creative.
Volunteers will assist and help in maintaining survey platforms, temporary resting sites (forest furniture, information panels and stands), resorts (fireplaces, toilets, forest furniture), the small landscape architectural buildings (fences, information panels and stands, stairs, foot-bridges, footpaths), recreational installations (wood furniture, bowers, swings), camping-sites, surroundings near river Nevezis
The EVS will be first of all stimulating for the local staff working in the Regional Park. Different culture and different point of view will enrich the work within the Park. The role of the volunteers can be also a strength-point for the development of international tourism. The volunteers will be asked to organise educational ecological programs for schoolchildren or even for younger kindergarten children.
Volunteers could also contribute with their time and effort to a barn of unique construction of the end of the 19th century in Ustrone homestead. It is an architectural and historical monument. The Museum of J.Tumas-Vaizgantas and Book Spreading established in it is the only of this kind in Lithuania as well as in other village which was constructed in 1880. An exposition of the Flax Museum is presented here.
An exhibition hall is open at the Eldership where artworks of artists are constantly exhibited. Here volunteers can organise and implement their own ideas and proposed activities.
There will be different types of activities concerning the time of the year. in spring, summer and autumn volunteers will more work outside in the territory of the park repairing infrastructure of leisure, observation places also working in the forest, cleaning environment, taking photos of the animals and plants. In winter time more activities can be organize in schools or with educational programs promoting ecology and spreading information about the regional park (campaign).
The staff will discuss the timetable together with the volunteers and make daily calendar according to the volunteers' wishes and their own skills and experiences, their needs. The volunteers' tasks will also evolve following their skills: if at the beginning they are taught and tutored on how to carry on various tasks, with time the volunteers themselves could, though still under supervising, tutor and pass their knowledge and ideas to some local youngsters.
Some volunteers' tasks include getting acquainted with other Lithuanian national and regional parks. So there will be possibility to take part in some conferences or seminars as well as to visit other Regional parks. We hope that volunteers, local community and administration of the Park will make a great opportunity to share ideas, methods and opinions in order to make effective and rich project.
