Resumo: "The “home of the sun” is located in Grímsnes in the south of Iceland and was founded on July 5th 1930 by a pioneering woman: Sesselja H. Sigmundsdóttir (1902-1974). Today all activities in this small eco-village are based on her lifework and visions. From the early beginning volunteers have played an importand role in the community.
Today, Sólheimar is a community where the goal is to give every individual an opportunity to live in a sustainable society. Sólheimar provides home and work to 43 individuals with special needs and in total, more than 100 people reside in Sólheimar.
About 50, both longterm and short term, volunteers work in Sólheimar every year from diffrent organization such as WWF and SEEDS and Sólheimar is a Host organization via European Voluntary Service.
To introduce volunteers to one of the world’s oldest and most unique eco-villages and to the everyday realities of the organisation’s work
To develop an understanding of how sustainability is achieved through community
To craft individual learning objectives for the experience
To develop relationships with persons in his/her field
To provide an understanding of community, sustainability, and the environment
To enhance the volunteer’s knowledge of Icelandic culture, language, and history
To foster a sense of individuality, independence, and personal growth Transportation is not frequent from Sólheimar to Reykjavík, the capital. The volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her fares out of the village if he/she wishes to travel during weekends and days off. The people who live in Sólheimar often go into the city and are willing to give the volunteers a lift. Sólheimar is approximately 100 km distance from Reykjavík city.
Sólheimar is an isolated place, and even more during the winter and at the beginning of the stay when you have just arrived from a very different lifestile. But at the same time Sólheimar is a very good place to learn Icelandic very well, more than in the cities where almost everybody can and prefers to speak english.
The volunteer will always be a helper of the person in charge of each workplace and the volunteer will be expected to work where it is most needed in each moment.
"

Normally candidates find out about the project placements in the EVS database, by contacting a sending organisation or by searching the internet for youth exchange work. If we have available project placement we inform our partners in Europe, and those volunteers that have showed interest in our projects before.
A candidate is selected when his/her interests are compatible with the project profile. Always candidates can ask us why they were or were not selected. We can see if they match with the activity through their motivation letters and CV's and also by conducting phone interviews.
