Resumo: The Charity Foundation for Public Health is a non-governmental, non-political, not-for-profit organisation and was founded and legally registered at the Ministry of Justice (No. 1504) in 2000. The aim was to create a new system of medical-social assistance for incurable patients with cancer in advanced and terminal stages of the disease, as well as for their relatives.
In 2001, the organization established the HOSPICE service, an inalienable part of the Foundation. HOSPICE is a palliative care service at home for patients with cancer in terminal stages. Foundation is a member of the following national and international associations. Also, HOSPICE is part of the Hospices of Hope network, a UK charity dedicated to supporting the development of hospice/palliative care in Eastern Europe, which also has members in Romania and Serbia.
Our vision is to ensure that every patient with advanced and incurable illnnesses will benefit from palliative care services.
Our mission: Improving the quality of life of patients with incurable cancer and other terminal diseases in progressive and advanced stages, by offering qualitative palliative care services.
Perfil: Age: 17-30
Tarefas: Volunteers that work in hospices throughout the world are an essential part of the hospice philosophy of care which recognises that dying is not just a medical event but a personal one as well. These volunteers are important members of an interdisciplinary team working to "de-institutionalise" the dying experience and provide a more humane system of care for the dying and their families.
Volunteers in the hospice find it personally gratifying, intellectually stimulating, and emotionally meaningful to assist those in need at a critical point in their lives. Many of these volunteers were introduced to hospice through the death of a family member and understand firsthand the value of hospice care, but nearly 20% of volunteers are new to the hospice concept. Volunteers consistently report that helping the terminally ill through hospice care is not about dying but about living.
We intend to offer EVS volunteers coming to our organisation this meaningful non-formal learning and intercultural environment, in which, using their own skills, abilities and personal hobbies, they can use their own skills, acquire new skills and competencies, and share with the community common and new values of respect, tolerance and care for life in general. We also intend to offer the volunteer the chance to discover Moldova and Moldovan customs and values, and share with them a sense of international understanding of real and local problems.
The EVS volunteers in our host organisation will be able to develop their own initiated or organisational initiated projects, using their hobbies and personal interests, that aim to enrich the life of the patients we care for; either children or elder people in need of companionship and adequate care and respect. The activities in our Foundation are concentrated around Health and Disability areas, and we expect the main projects and activities to be initiated or adopted by our EVS volunteers:
- Activities for fundraising, event management and PR in support of our direct services (an EVS volunteer with clerical skills can serve our hospice by helping in the office with simple administrative duties; fundraising responsibilities can range from preparing mailings or thank you letters to organising fundraising events and contacting possible donors; PR activities can range from speaking to local press, updating our website and talking to organisations and individuals about the Hospice's work)
- Activities of recreation for patients (involving music, visual art, theatre, photo, complex cultural projects, literature/storytelling, poetry, multimedia recreational projects for children and elderly people in day centres or accommodated in residential care unit)
- Activities of support for patients (visiting, reading, taking walks, writing letters, bringing in music, supervising visits with pets, even massage therapy for volunteers with the necessary skills)
- Activities of respite and support for family members (EVS volunteers can assist with shopping or household maintenance, or allow family care givers the opportunity to get some time away from the house; family members also appreciate a visit from a compassionate friend who understands what they are going through)
- Activities of child-care assistance (this can include help with babysitting, picking up children from school or providing necessary transportation to club meetings or sporting events and practices. Volunteers have also made invaluable contributions with family pet care)
Each volunteer will have gained the necessary experience to enable them to bring their active commitment in Moldovan civil society. To this end they will carry out activities of support and assistance of our patients, under the professional and personal orientation on behalf of the project coordinator.
The volunteers will get practical experience in working with communities and people facing hospice care needs, learning how to deal sensitively with these people and this experience. They will develop their teamwork skills and will gain self-confidence by taking initiative and perhaps setting up their own care projects. They will acquire in-depth knowledge of Moldovan culture and civilisation, including basic Moldovan language learning.
