Resumo: The host prganization is a marine education centre which opened in 1997, created to combine research, public exhibition, aquariums, and education on marine issues. The centre is visited by approximately 70.000 guests each year.

The harbor porpoises are the main focus of the research and are one of the main attractions. The harbor porpoise research aims to enhance knowledge of sensory systems and behavior and to investigate methods of reducing bycatch. By having the porpoises at the organization we are also able to create awareness and educate the public about the harbor porpoise’s plight in the wild. International research co-operation is currently carried out with institutions from many different countries.

The organization have approximately 15 full-time employees year round, not including the many interns and part-time staff. The Research department consists of a team composed of a Swedish department leader and two Danish trainers and one Swedish trainer. Danish and foreign interns assist in all the daily tasks.

Perfil: The volunteer must be at least 18 years of age due to the working and safety conditions of working at the ocean. It is therefor also important that the volunteer respects the rules of safety on the pontoons, which of course will be tought as the first thing and there will always be other people around when working on the pontoons. In corelation with this, it is also important that the volunteer is able to understand and speak english to a certaint extend.
The volunteer must be interested in all the aspects of working with marine mammals. Here I mean both the cleaning, maintaining and the animal parts. It’s always a good thing to have some previous experience in working with animals but not required.

It’s important that the volunteer can work both individually and in a group.
Since we have guests and researchers visit our center, it is important that the volunteer is open to talk speak with them and answer what ever questions they might have and treat them with respect.
Sometimes unforeseen situations can occur, therefore it is important that the volunteer is flexible to changing working schedules and daily tasks. EVS volunteers work 80% of a full time position and two weekends a month.
So a volunteer intrested in animal training, research and public out reach and willing to do all other aspects of animal care like cleaning, mainteance, fish sorting etc. would benefit from a internship with us.So if you are thinking about a profession within animal care, training or research this is the internship for you.

Tarefas: Since we have so many interns coming to the organization, we have an intern programme check of system we follow and this will be the situation for the volunteer too. In the beginning the intern will learn all the daily tasks that are necessary for the daily routines, such as fish sorting, kitchen cleaning, assisting the trainers and maintenance of the facilities. After an individual period of time the volunteer will start feeding the animals and start to learn how to do different behaviors with the animals. We have one person in charge of all EVS and who will be the person to go to if problems of any kind.

Since we work with live animals unforeseen situations can occur and it is important that the volunteer is alright with routines or working tasks being changed and deal with unexpected situations.
Also we have a lot of different weather situations with both wind and water changes which can cause changes in the daily tasks and work routines.

The role of the intern will be to help with the daily flow in the fishkitchen, mainteaneces and in time participate in the feedings/trainingsessions of our animals. In the season where the center is open it is also important to help in giving the guests a great experience which means answering questions and so on.

To be an intern at our organization you will have the opportunity to learn about research, porpoises and seals. Both about their biology and how they live in nature. We do a lot of research especially with our porpoises and through this you will learn a lot about them as a species. Our volunteers also have the opportunity to meet researcher from all over the world and the opportunity to observe and assist in new training for research projects and see data being collected.

You will also have the opportunity to learn about their daily husbandry and care and also the basic rules of how to train animals and opportunity to see and follow a lot of new training.
There is also opportunities to learn about the animal life and ecosystems of the danish waters.
