Resumo: The town is a severely disadvantaged community that has a very high number of families headed by one parent. It is a community that suffers from very high unemployment and has been ravaged by drug abuse. Physically, the town was identifed with high rise towerblocks which were built in the late sixties as an experiment in social housing. However, over the last 10 years, the physical environment has undergone a major regeneration and the physical environment has been somewhat transformed. Much of this change is in progress. There is a very high population of young people in the town, many of whom are seriously at-risk. Although there are many serious issues in the town, there is also a very strong sense of community with many groups and organisations.

What the organization can offer EVS volunteers in terms of Service Opportunities
EVS Volunteers at organization have the opportunity to experience the wide range of work that the organization carries out in the town based on the volunteer’s interests and skills. As much as possible, the volunteer’s time is spent in contact with young people with the aim of developing positive relationships, learning about one another’s cultures and sharing volunteering experiences. The majority of the volunteer’s time is spent working with groups and clubs with the support of experienced youth workers and youth work volunteers. Although the volunteer will have time for administrative duties, the bulk of the work will be in groups with young people. The town participates in many youth relevant events and festivals and the EVS volunteers will be part of this work.

Perfil: • Age: 17 - 30.
• The volunteer has at least an intermediate level of spoken english (English classes can be provided, however we ask that the volunteer has some familiarity as clear communication is core to the work).
• The volunteer has some experience working with young people, particularly in a youth work, youth club or youth group setting.

Beyond these basic criteria, the town seeks to recruit volunteers who are interested in the various activities of the organisation and may have special skills to offer to our participants. The special skills that we seek vary from year to year depending on the activities in the Youth Work Programme e.g. sport interest, arts, music, digital media, theatre.

Advertising the Placement
The organization receives many applications for projects on an ongoing basis due to our advertisement on the database of approved projects and our use of the Europa website. We also try to work within our established networks, and previous partnerships that have been successful to source volunteers. Also, as several of our former volunteers are still linked in with their sending organisations, they help us to inform others about the possibilities in our project.

Tarefas: Overall, it is the role of the EVS volunteer to engage positively with the young people and develop positive relationships. Further, volunteers are expected to feedback information to teams if there are issues requiring follow up. The volunteer will be provided with full training on these issues in the first few months of the placement. The EVS volunteer provides support to the clubs and groups and events. The tasks involved vary from group to group and throughout the year, depending on the needs of the group.

Initially, volunteers are asked to take on an observatory role, and over time participate in the planning of group sessions, along with running activities and ice breakers etc. Clubs and groups do many activities ranging from group work sessions on issues like life skills, relationships and sexual education, communication, drug use, and also participate in a wide range of activities. Activities could also include arts, music, theatre, media and participation in local festivals, in-house gigs, summer projects, street art and park games.

The specific tasks of the volunteer will change throughout the EVS period. In general, the volunteer is expected to:
• Participate in an induction process, and training with other volunteers.
• Work directly in groups and clubs both in the club and in linked organisations to provide support to activities and events for young people.
• Provide support to various drop-in areas of the Central Youth Facility such as the CITY computer clubs, Mon and Fri evening drop-in sessions and the Youth Café.
• Work with the Youth Groups team to plan and implement programmes and special events, e.g. the summer and Halloween programmes.
• Meet with the Volunteer Support Worker and, where appropriate, Youth Groups team to discuss progress, training needs and support needs.
• Attend English language training if necessary.
• Spend time with young people informally discussing volunteering and opportunities of volunteering both locally and abroad.
• Lead/participate in specifically organised activities that promote YIA, Interculturalism, EVS visibility.

Additionally, the volunteer will be invited to propose and implement programmes or activities based on her own skills and interests. This may involve the creation of new activities with groups of young people( juggling, sport, digital media project, personal development, intercultural learning etc.) The support of the Youth Work team and the Volunteer Support Worker and other relevant staff will be available.

The Youth work Programme is implemented over a 6 day week (Monday to Saturday) with a monthly Special Needs Disco on a Sunday. The volunteers will be timetable into areas of activity over this timeframe.
