The wildlife hospital is located in a town with about 60.000 inhabitants. The atmosphere is a mixture of tourism and fishing activities. There is an airport, a harbour for fishery, sailors and ferries, and a railway station. An intensive net of train, tram and bus connections makes transport al over the country easy. The local language is dutch (french in the south of Belgium), but most people speak french or english as well.
In winter season, this is a moderate city with 70.000 inhabitants. But in summer holidays, this develops into 200.000 people. Most tourist come from other areas in Belgium, but we also have a lot of English, Holland and German tourists. Because of this tourism, june-july and august are the best months to live her. There is a great atmosfere, with a lot of things to do: local festivals, beachclubs, exhibitions, etc.
Every EVS – volunteer gets Dutch language school here, but in the beginning, the communication language is mostly English. This due to our special work, where we are working with alive animals, and a good and precise communication is the most important thing.

Perfil: The recruitment of future volunteers, is a simple but organized activity, coordinated by the EVS-coordinator. During several months, data of different candidates are collected and studied. After this, a first selection is made by the coordinator. Requirements are: mimimum knowledge of English or French (or Dutch), interested in wild animals and the rehabilitation of them, any experience in the working field, general characteristics etc. The selected candidates are then contacted to ask if they are still available for the project. Then, all staffmembers have a meeting together, and make a top 3 of their best candidates and talk about them. Also the EVS that are still here, can give their opinion about the candidates. In the end, the EVS-coordinator makes his selection, and contacts the candidate with the good news.

This timetable is just an example. There are no fixed working shedules. Every month, the coordinator makes a new working schedule, and tries to fulfill all the needs of the volunteers, such as free days, free weekends and holidays. We also make sure that you don’t work more than 5 days in a row. Every volunteer has the chance to change the schedule untill 2 days before.
For the short-term volunteers, this schedule and the different tasks and possbilities are almost the same, except that there are no organized Dutch language lessons in summer holidays. We also don’t have the opportunity to organize this by ourselves. What we try, is to learn the volunteer some basics, so that the short-term volunteer has an idea of how our language is. The short-term volunteers work together with the long-term volunteers, and this is a chance to cooperate with new people and do some new experiences.
There is also a special mentor who comes ones a week to the Rescue Centre.
