Resumo: Activities proposed would be in our organization. This includes the children and youth club, a redesign project for unemployed youth, the Second-Hand market, to assist in making the meals for those less fortunate or attending the centre, and also talk to those less fortunate and if interested the volunteer can part-taking in church activities of the organization.
The host project is located in a small town outside of the capitol Reykjavík. The town is called Reykjanesbær and is very close to the international airport in Keflavík, Iceland. Reykjanesbær is on peninsula in the south-Western part of Iceland. It is the fifth largest town in Iceland with 14.000 inhabitants. Even though the town is not large on international standard it has to offer all that larger towns/cities have such as restaurants, cinema, swimming pool, sports facilities, language classes, schools and University, cafés, shopping centre, health services and bus system to name a few. Towns and cities in Iceland usually have a cosmopolitan look to them and offer services usually seen in larger cities abroad, this is also true for Rekjanesbær but of course on a smaller scale.
The cultural scene in Iceland is blossoming in many areas such as music, literature, theatre. The beautiful and unspoilt nature is always at close reach, both in Reykjanesbær and other parts of the country. The buses are free within the town city limits and there is also a bus service to the capitol, Reykjavík, on regualr basis. Those trips take about 35 minutes and are free for the organization volunteers living in the Keilir area. The swimming pools in Reykjanesbær are also free. It is easy and quick to go about on a bicycle in Reykjanesbær as the town is rather flat but expereinces all kinds of weather like all of Iceland.
Education in Iceland is on par with leading nations in Europe and at any given moment around 7000 Icelandic students are studying all over the world, so in general the intercultural experience of the population is high. The language is Icelandic, but English is the foreign language that most Icelanders are able to speak. The volunteer will most likely live in a flat share in the Keilir area where a lot of young people live that go to the University. This means that the volunteer would be around a lot of young people and possibly forge some friendships with them.
Another hosting option is a host family and possibly the project might have options to host within it. The volunteer will have breakfast and lunch in the project, and get in addition to that food money for the meals she/he does not get in the project. The volunteer will receive due allowance (pocket money) on monthly basis. The volunteer will receive up to 35 hours of language training on arrival in Iceland. On-going support and training will be provided by the staff and co-workers, daily training by the staff of the the organization and a personal support is given by the volunteer’s mentor.
Perfil: AUS as the co-ordinating organisation and the host organization would like to host volunteers between the ages of 18 and 30 years from all European countries and countries generally involved in the YiA programme. The volunteers have to be flexible, open to new experiences and interested in discovering different society and culture. It is essential to the nature of the YiA programme to give as broad a group of young Europeans the opportunity to participate, so no working skills of a particular nature are required to become a volunteer candidate.
Normally, candidates find out about the organization project in the EVS database, by contacting a sending organisation or by searching the internet for youth exchange programmes. The candidate will contact the Coordinating organisation AUS which screens all CV’s and motivation letters before sending them onwards to the organization. AUS will also inform their partners in Europe or those volunteers that have showed interest in the organization project before since we believe that a dedication to the placement and its background or target group is important to the success of the programme for the individual. A candidate is selected when his/her interests are compatible with the project profile.
In general candidates can always contact the coordinating organisation, AUS, and will receive an update of the selection process. We can see if they match with the activity through their Motivation Letters and CV’s. During the final phase of the selection process, AUS contacts the candidate once more with more specific questions before presenting his or her profile to the Captain of the organization.
The volunteer does not carry all responsibility in the work, their work-time is flexible and they are always encouraged to bring in new ideas and participate actively in the project. The volunteers will be given any training necessary for them to carry out their tasks. The organization and AUS as the coordinating organisation places particular emphasis on not demanding any particular skills for the placement tasks in order to give all young people, not least those who have not received the same opportunities for an active participation in society, education or work the opportunity to learn through volunteering.
Tarefas: The organization has an international atmosphere as staff, volunteers and guests come from countries all over the world. Part of the organization's work is based on volunteer’s contribution including the Second-hand market. The organization is interested in hosting international volunteers as it adds value to its place. The kind atmosphere of the the city welcomes anyone and staff and volunteers work together to give people with less opportunities a chance of a friendly talk and a feeling of belonging, young people and youth to have a place to go to and things to do, offer choir and knitting clubs for those wanting a social interaction.
The role of the EVS volunteer/s will be based on the volunteer’s strength and interest. There is a lot of variety in the work at the organization and the possibilities for the volunteer to bring in ideas and abilities. Activities proposed would be in the city which is a part of the organization. Activities includes the children and youth club, the redesign project for the unemployed, the Second-Hand market, the meals and talks to those less fortunate, choir and other social clubs and activities and if interested part-taking in church activities. At the city, the volunteer will have an opportunity to work in those areas she find most interesting.
The redesign project provides an opportunity for unemployed youth to come and work on items from the 2nd hand shop, redesigning them and labelling them a new. These items will then be sold and part of the profit goes to the young people that work on them. The volunteer, will be able to work on this project and assist the youth where needed and brig forth ideas and possibilities.
A children club is operated at the organization where children and youth are assisted doing their homework, work on art project, spend time together chatting and playing games. The volunteers will also have an opportunity to work in the second hand shop in customer care and also in the soup kitchen of the Army.
At the soup kitchen, everybody helps around to make it a comfortable place to visit and where less fortunate people can come, have coffee, engage and interact with each other and relax. The volunteer is expected to be around, talk to the guests and also help with some practical work such as preparing coffee in the kitchen and sometimes cleaning (as cleaning the tables and preparing the saloon).
The volunteer will be a part of a team, and it will be appreciated to bring ideas and experience into the team. The organization is at the moment very open to new methods and thinking, and as an international organisation it is also very open to people from other countries and cultures. All new ideas are welcomed and if the volunteer is interested in adding new things to the project in co-operation with the staff it is well appreciated. The organization wants the volunteer to feel comfortable and feel that he/she can use their own initiative.
There will always be another volunteer or staff from the organization who is responsible for the activities proposed but the volunteer will have an opportunity to shape her work considerably.
The volunteer is expected to be in the project 5 days a week, having Saturday and Sunday off. The volunteer is expected to start in the project from 10am three mornings a week. Tuesday will start after lunch and on Friday the volunteer will be off during the day until work starts in the evening (see timetable). The voluntary activity will take up between 30-35 hours per week. The volunteer will be part of the team, but not as a staff that would otherwise not be hired.
