Resumo: "Cooperativa Bucaneve was founded in 1983 in Castel Goffredo by some families needing a support for their disabled children, with the help of some volunteers. in more than 20 years we have offered our services to more than 100 people, in accordance with families, Municipalities and the Local Health Authority
The Cooperative is based on the principles of the international Cooperative Movement, such as mutuality, solidarity, fair distribution of money and democracy, in order to build up a new economy. According to these principles, the cooperative services are in the field of Human, Moral, Cultural and Professional qualification in order to improve the Social and Working conditions of people in a state of need and exclusion.
The Cooperative intends to achieve its aims through information activities and awareness campaigns about the themes of disability. We also run medical, welfare related and educational services addressed in particular to disabled people.
Families, volunteers, and professionals in the field of disadvantage, disability and exclusion collaborate at Bucaneve.
We have recently moved to the new Centre Bucaneve, a modern structure planned and built according to the European standards to give autonomy and independence to adult disable people. It is conceived as an integral part of the town, with arcades, a shop and a coffee corner giving onto the street. Inside there are different spaces and services, in the form of modular units and accessible by the territory: gym, private practice, computers room, workshops.
Our new Centre can offer customised responses, through both day service and assisted-living facility, to 45-50 people with disability, and has become a reference point for 15-20 people more in need of rehabilitation, or family support, job training and guidance paths towards an independence life, socializing and free time, culture and sport activities, social and educational support, self-help groups. The family association and the disable people themselves actively participated in the design of the new centre and are directly involved in its management.
Our activities aim not only at satisfying the users’ primary needs (board and lodging, etc..) but also at meeting their need for affection, through relationships based on friendship and confidence among the users and with the educators; we also intend to respond to their social needs through leisure time and integration activities also open to the territory.
Inside the Centre we want to guarantee a familiar and friendly atmosphere that allow our users to feel comfortable, free to express themselves. In this way they can improve their self confidence, that often hinder them communicate with the others because of their pathologies
There are 2 types of target users: those who attend day activities and those who live in the Centre, even carrying out external activities.
The total staffs consist of 30 employees and collaborators.

Tarefas: "At Cooperativa Bucaneve, during the first month volunteers are given an introduction in order to better understand the new context and their role; they are gradually provided with information about the general activities of the cooperative and with the necessary instructions in order to better carry out their tasks; they are introduced to the staff and the users of the day centres. We ensure ongoing support and willingness to negotiate in case of new demands on their part. Moreover, to help integration into the local community, volunteers are also informed about how to orient themselves, useful numbers, different opportunities of meeting other young people, socializing, participating into excursions, parties and other local events, etc. if possible contacts with other EVS volunteers are encouraged.
To assess the implementation of the project, verify their progress and talk about possible personal or technical difficulties, there are regular evaluation meetings with their referent person and informal occasions with the mentor. Approximately once a month volunteers are also asked to participate in the group supervision at the coordinating organisation. These meetings are included in their working schedule and are considered essential for the success of the project.
The referent person undertakes to give volunteers feed-backs about their progress and agree with them about the following goals to pursue, both during daily activity and in the relevant meetings.
Before volunteers return home, the coordinating organisation releases the YouthPass, to certify the competences they have acquired during the EVS experience.
The volunteer’s general role consists in backing the educators of the centre for disable people and providing an added value to the activities of Bucaneve. Their contribution is particularly important for our cooperative because it can be an important chance of intercultural exchange. Indeed the European volunteers can represent an “added value” in many senses, because:
- being foreigners, and strangers, they can help our users and staff better understand and handle the way they face diversity, and deepen their awareness about different cultures
- they give the chance of establishing new relationships that go beyond an ordinary life situation;
- thanks to their young age and dynamism, they can certainly stimulate the staff and users’ curiosity;
- moreover, being in contact with a person of different culture, views and way of interpreting voluntarism, which could also be dissimilar from ours, can stimulate our educators and give them new hints in their way of working with disable people.
In general, the volunteers’ task consists in supporting the users during the socialising and integration activities, helping managing the social-recreational activities of the centre and involving the users in the participation to the initiatives promoted by the territory. Besides, they are expected to work side by side with the staff members in some basic common activities, such as helping the users during personal care actions (dressing, using equipment and wheel-chair, etc.). Here some example of activities follow:
- Workshops (E.g. gymnastics, art and crafts, music, cooking, etc.): volunteers help the staff during different workshops, and stimulate our users in becoming more active and involved in what they do, and better express themselves through “alternative” communication channels.
- External activities and special events: the volunteers’ task consists in making the disabled people participate more effectively, so that they become more and more actively involved and not just passive spectators of such occasions a s walks around the village, excursions, or the so called “special events” -spring day, folk fairs, art competitions, etc.. Sometimes EVS volunteers can plan the leisure time proposals to undertake together with the staff, or they just help in the organisation (i.e. preparing stands, taking care of the expositions of the products made in the workshops, etc.)
- Summer camps: Volunteers can help the staff during the summer camps, when their presence can give an important contribution in making the holiday more pleasant.
Volunteers, always working side by side with the personnel, are involved in most of the planned activities according to the following schedule.
"
Horário: "There are 30 working hours per week, including meetings with referent person and mentor, training, and supervision at the coordinating organisation. EVS volunteers usually work from Monday to Friday but we ask for flexibility especially when they support activities addressed to the users who live in the centre. In case they participate in the summer camps, the working time does not exceed 35 hours per week, and they can get back the possible extra hours when they go back.
A more detailed programme is customised together with volunteers and sending organisations, according to their educational background and experience, respecting their personal interests and specific skills, with all respect to the present project.
