Resumo: The philosophy of accompaniment at the organization is to develop leisure activities that allow our residents to have a good time. We want to stimulate their memories, and we organize in correlation with these activities painting, sculpture, photos, or film workshops.

We want the residents to continue making plans for the future even if they are over 80 years old. To speak about tomorrow with elder people is certainly important.

It is good to put a smile on the wrinkled lips of our elders, for whom life no longer reserves any truly positive perspectives. The choice of activities is made by taking into account the aptitudes and availability of the staff members and the desires of the residents.
Depending on the imagination, interests and experience of the volunteer, an activity might very well be an individual or group reading or projects of theatrical sketches or scenes, or even improvisation with the residents. These are only examples. Other activities could include planting a miniature garden or a perfumed garden.
Numerous activities are already included in the Home’s programme: special events for the grape-harvest, for Christmas, for Mardi Gras and for Easter, a sauerkraut festival, two annual outings to restaurants, a picnic during the city’s annual Music Festival in June, shopping trips to the market in Palente, painting, sculpture, baking of fruit pies, a memory workshop, a choral group, card games, lotteries, etc…

Perfil: Age: 17-30

Tarefas: This project allows to a European volunteer to discover new linguistic and cultural horizons and to get involved with people that encounter difficulties. The volunteer will have the chance to discover the conditions of the old age, which is often connected to the thematic of dependency. The volunteer acquires experience with a social group that he is not often confronted to, and this experience will help him in his future choices about human, civil or professional questions.

Old age belongs to our human condition, and it is beneficial to our society that young people experience solidarity with this age group: the volunteer, through the contacts he will have with the structure’s staff, with the elder people and their families, will develop his sensibility for human relationships, and get a new maturity from it. His experience of a confrontation with the Other will certainly be helpful for him when he will be back home.

Moreover, the volunteer will benefit from an enriching international experience, which will help him to find a professional orientation. Indeed, to discover a new environment gives him the opportunity to improve his language skills, to approach different professional areas and people with various life stories, which is socially and humanely very fulfilling.

In the same way, the volunteer will offer to the hosting organization the possibility to know about his culture, a supplement of humanity, an extra availability…
The presence of the volunteer will favor the (re-)apparition of intergenerational relations, which will benefit as well to the youngster as to the Home’s residents.
The open-mindedness of the residents and their curiosity to discover new cultures will be stimulated.

At the arrival of the volunteer, several leisure activities will be proposed to him in dialogue with the animator and the Direction (games, lotto, memory workshop, pottery workshop…). The volunteer, as soon as he feels well in his role of animator, will have the possibility to propose other activities and to develop his personal project during his service. The Home’s activity includes at least four high points in the year: implementation of animations initiated by the volunteer (with the help of the staff), organization and management of workshops: music, painting, individual or collective games, soft gymnastics (under the control of the physical therapist), cultural outings (museums, market etc…) and festive events.
The tasks are very diverse depending on the workshops and on the participants’ aptitudes.
This “well being and living” given to the elder people represents a real benefit for the local community and allows the youngster to participate to the local life, for example in creating contacts with the multimedia library, the museums, the sports clubs, local orchestras and chorals…

The volunteer will never be put into a position of responsibility; he will participate in different activities under the responsibility of the activities coordinator.

Horário: A typical daily schedule would be as follows :
• accompany individuals or groups on walks to the local market with the help of the physical therapist
• accompany residents to the dining halls
• participation in group activities such as pottery, painting, baking, lottery, physical therapy, memory workshop, outings…
• when the weather is beautiful, walks will be organized in the park and the tea time will take place under the sunshade

The volunteer will participate as often as necessary to the staff meetings and will be integrated in the team. The team will do his best to help him accomplish his mission and support him in every way.
The volunteer will have some regular tasks to do, but he will have the freedom to develop his personal projects, for example: presenting his culture through an exhibition, managing cooking or reading workshops, organising outings.

The volunteer have an average of 33 hours of service per week from Monday to Friday and will have two days off per month of service.
