Resumo: The host organization leading youth focused civic education organisation. Northern Ireland is unfortunately still a difficult and sometimes violent environment for many of its young citizens, and with the notion of ‘National’ identity still highly contested, there has been little development of a sense of civic role and responsibilities (though not just amongst youth). Our work aims to help young people become the catalyst for the building of more democratic communities in Northern Ireland. We work with young people using in/non formal education methodology (youth work) in a range of settings as detailed previously. Our work is focussed on peace building and creating democratic space. This is this especially relevant as the current government has been unable to come to an agreement on the Community Relations Policy ‘Cohesion, Sharing and Integration’ and this has meant no direction from government for community groups.

We work in communities that are exclusively protestant or catholic, as well as in mixed communities, and with young people from ethnic minority and young people with disabilities. Most of these communities experience severe social disadvantage and have been adversely affected by the conflict. Groups of young people meet on a regular basis (usually weekly) and are supported by the volunteer coach who helps to guide the group, but does not do the work for them. The staff work to manage the projects and support the volunteers. The staff in turn are managed by a Board of 7 people that includes 2 youth representatives.

In recent years we have continued to focus on the issue of violence with young people through our ‘Away from Violence’ project. Young people continue to experience high levels of violence in their everyday lives, but are rarely naming it as such. They see it as part of their existence. We believe this is due to the legacy of the conflict and the normalisation of a culture of violence within communities. The current riots being a particular example. For example one of our groups is working on car crime as it is prevalent on their area. Cars are stolen by local young people and then brought back into their communities to be rallied around the streets and eventually burnt out. Our work is to enable young people to realise that violence should not be part of their everyday existence and there are other ways to tackle disadvantage and discrimination.

Perfil: In terms of profile of the volunteers our main requirements is that the volunteers have a strong personal motivation for working with and supporting young people to create positive social change. Whilst experience is always useful, this is by no means a pre requisite as training will be provided. In terms of language skills, a reasonable standard of English is important, as it is essential in terms of communicating with colleagues and young people – however additonal language courses will be financed and supported.

Tarefas: •Youth work
The volunteer will assist with the setting up and supporting groups of young people, including the organising of weekly programmes and assisting the organization in the development of effective models of practice in the area of citizenship education. They will work closely with other PA staff in community, school and other settings.

•Multi-media Support and campaigning
The volunteer will assist in the ongoing development and upkeep of the W.I.M.P.S website. This will require creating a range of multi-media resources, such as streaming video productions and working with young people to assist them in using creative multi-media resources.

•Volunteer Recruitment and Development
They will assist the Training Officer in the recruitment, training and support of a team of volunteer coaches at local sites and through organised training.

•Evaluation
They will assist with the monitoring and evaluation of the organization practice including the progress of the groups, the individual young people involved and other volunteer staff.

•Reporting
Working with other staff they will be required (and supported) to provide regular reports on their work.

•Team Working
In addition to being a key member of the PA team, volunteers will have the opportunity to network with local youth service providers, district councils, and other bodies who impact on the lives of the young people in the groups. They will also liaise and work with staff of other partner organisations as appropriate
