Resumo: The host organization is located in one of the largest municipality.

People living in the city belong to different socio-economic and cultural classes, whereas there are also a big number of economic migrants from different countries. Economic/commercial life and social life are intense in the city. Habitants and visitors of the city have the opportunity to enjoy a great number of services of health and welfare, education and entertainment, ecc.

The city is very close to the central Athens and is connected to the capital city with a large transportation network (with METRO, buses, trolley). The area is very lively and popular to young creative people and also very interesting in the sense of its historical site.In the central Athens there are a lot of monuments (e.g. Acropolis) and other historical sites, museums, and entertainment spots.

Athens is a Metropolitan capital that assembles the interest of the whole world not only because of its history and culture but also because of its beauty. In Athens are being organized big events, international conferences, the biggest of which was the Olympic Games in 2004.

The organization is among the very few organizations in the western Athens, in general, that provides special services in the field of mental health. Under the organization, there are two rehabilitation units (boarding houses) for 25 mental health service users, and a centre for various therapies and creative activities open to the community and also in the city is located the first of the eleven PsychoEducational Centers for Children with learning disabilities. The organization has developed the last years a network of services for children with learning disabilities, which are funded mainly by the public funds of insurance.

Activities organized by the organization include two annual Bazaars (Easter Bazaar / Christmas Bazaar), a sport event for disabled that is organized in cooperation with the local authorities and many other events and actions aiming at prevention, sensitization and education of the community around mental health issues. Among all these, distinguished place possesses the “Art for More” Festival, which is a innovative initiative and it centers around the connection of Art and mental health.

Last, in the context of Youth in Action Programme, the organization is informing and publicising the opportunities offered to young people through the Programme (for volunteering, for trainings, ecc).

So, within this dynamic environment, the volunteers are welcome to take part in the Voluntary Service and to contribute with their energy, potential and creativity.

Perfil: All the volunteers have the chance to get to know the content of different professions, to have informal information/knowledge about many different proffessions and studies and, more important, to see the practical aspects and real working conditions of each proffessional. This is really important for young people , especially for those who are in search of studies and/or professional careers. Indeed, our past has showed that some volunteers choose their professional future based on their experience in the field of mental health.
Volunteers work closely with the supervision of the staff and have on the job constant training, whereas they are never left alone in the working place. However, their tasks are simple and they don’t need prior special knowledge or training.
Age: 17-30

Tarefas: volunteers’ tasks refer to supporting mental health patients with autonomous living and various creative activities. Basically, these activites include support mental health service users in completing their daily activities depending on their needs and skills (making beds, preparing meals, going out for shopping), motiving the users to participate in recreational activities (going out for coffee, going to the stadium), educational activities (basic IT skills), andf taking part in therapeutic procedures and groups (art therapy, music therapy, drama therapy).
At the same time, volunteers take part in other activities, and more specifically:
a) In activities related to proving information to locals about the idea of voluntarism, the Youth in Action Programmes and its possibilities for the mobility of the young people, Specially, in view of the end of the YiA Programme in 2013, volunteers will have the task to gather and publish an “overview” of all the voluntary actions took place in the organiation since the beginning (publish photos on the blog, collect and publish volunteers’ stories, ecc)
b) In activities related to different events organized by the organization (Easter bazaar, Christmas Bazaar, Art for More Festival) publicising the events, graphics of flyers and brochures, ecc
c) In activities related to supporting technical jobs like restoration, gardening, ecc (these activities are especially for those volunteers with fewer opportunities)
Last, we note that the interaction between the volunteers and the mental health service users functions as a form of comunication with the community, where as the volunteers can be a role model for all the users who are at risk of social exclusion. Therefore, the role of the volunteers is very important.
Services for the volunteers
Upon their arrival, the volunteers are given language courses by a private tutor, given that the Greek language is not widely known and the comunication in greek is very important not only for the inclusion in the greek society but also for the working environment.
