Resumo: The organization operates a workshop based in a nineteenth century mill on the border between North and West, in a secure industrial estate. This is an area of social and economic deprivation.
The organization provides accommodation for all our EVS volunteers in a semi-detached 7 bedroom house in North - 15 minute from the workshop. The house has a garden and backs onto a local park.
The house complies with House of multi-occupancy regulations.
Perfil: The organization is looking to recruit volunteers who are open to new cultures, hard working, tolerant and keen on working in a stimulating and different environment that can present various challenges.
Our ideal volunteer is open to the ethos and thinking of The organization - particularly in relation to sustainable development - questioning, willing to learn and to share his/her ideas and abilities.
We have a well established recruitment process. Applicants are asked to complete a questionnaire and submit a specific letter of motivation and a CV. All candidates are notified of our deadline and the results of the selection. Selection is carried out by a team within the organisation using a points based system. We try to ensure that there is a gender and nationality balance within the pool of volunteers. We also try to provide a place for those who have not further opportunity to apply to EVS due to age constraints.
The organization has built up good working relationships with a number of sending organisations over the years.
Age: 18 until 30 years old
Tarefas:
The organization provides volunteers with the opportunity to be involved in a dynamic development, environmental and voluntary organisation that puts the volunteer central to everything we do. We encourage volunteers to learn new skills and develop existing ones. Wherever possible we encourage and support volunteers to take on responsibilities.
The organization will provide training and support aimed to help build self confidence and employability.
The roles the volunteers will take on are demanding and challenging but extremely rewarding as well. They will have to be able to work in a logical and systematic way, gain technical understanding, work with a wide range of people with a diverse skill base and co-ordinate these to meet deadlines.
Communication and social skills are vital and the organization will assist the volunteers in developing these. This will be particularly important in the roles outlined for the volunteers of working with people with extra support needs.
All EVS volunteers share a number of common experiences – living in a foreign country, speaking/learning a foreign language and volunteering for a period of time.
The organization offers EVS volunteers some experiences that are not commonly shared by all hosting organisations that can have a real impact on the volunteer’s development and their learning outcomes.
The organization is run entirely by volunteers and seeks whenever possible to be non-hierarchical. Volunteers are treated equally, are encouraged to take on responsibility and to become involved in decision making. Debate and discussions are encouraged at all levels and about all issues. This reflects the importance of questioning development in the ethos of the organization.
Role and activities of EVS Volunteers -
Each EVS will be joining a team involved in many different activities designed to support artisans in East Africa and local people with disabilities. There are many different activities which the volunteer could be involved in. Some of these are listed below.
To assist in the development and continued support to our Sewing and Training Centre in Mwanza, Tanzania and our new small scale sewing and training centres in Tanzania and Uganda. This will involve learning how to refurbish sewing machines and sorting out materials and accessories for tailors. Once the volunteer has been in post for 2 months they will be asked to take on the role of co-ordinating the shipment of these machines. This work involves producing time lines, carrying out quality control, logistics and supervision of work schedules.
During the year they are here the organization will be organising a major campaign to collect sewing machines through Northern Ireland. The volunteer will have the opportunity to play a major role in this work
To assist in planning and making preparations for our new tools centre in East Africa and to prepare tool shipments for vocational training colleges in Uganda. This work will involve stock taking, crate making and quality control. The volunteer will also learn tool refurbishment and use.
To work alongside and in time support and supervise local volunteers who have learning difficulties and mental health problems and those with additional support needs. This work takes place in the town and Downpatrick 2 days a week.
To become active in the operation and management of the organization and participate in decision making at a level they feel comfortable with. Each volunteer is invited to join one or more of our working groups and become involved in the management and delivery of programmes for the organisation.
The tasks that each volunteer will undertake are dependent to some extent on the volunteer. The organization seeks whenever possible to match the interests and wants of the volunteer to the tasks available.
The organization undertakes a wide variety of tasks. The volunteers will be involved in the following:
Tool Refurbishment: cleaning, sharpening, grinding, oiling, painting, varnishing, reshafting and packing tools.
Sewing Machine checking and refurbishment: cleaning, filing, oiling, testing etc.
Sewing Machine Treadles: Dismantling, repainting, sanding, varnishing and linseed oiling.
Tool Collecting and Sorting: visiting individual homes and various council amenity sites around NI to sort out and collect tools and sewing machines. Sorting out cloth, fabric and other sewing accessories.
Working with volunteers with extra support needs: a large part of this work is in being a supportive presence for the volunteer – being there to listen and encourage the volunteers in her/his work. With training the volunteers can take on a more proactive role with the volunteers including designing work schedules.
Educational/Promotional Work: At present the organization is working with the Lions clubs to promote our work and ask them for assistance in collecting tailoring/sewing accessories for our centre in Tanzania. The organization is also in the process of updating our website. This work is a direct result of the interest and desire of our EVS volunteers to improve our networking/communication channels. The organization also produces an regular newsletter. This work is currently overseen by one of our EVS volunteers and could be one of the tasks for the volunteers in the future, if they have an interest in this area of work.
Working Groups: the organization has a number of groups that are responsible for different aspects of the work of the organisation. These groups include publicity, fundraising, collections, our Mwanza project, the development of our new project, vocational training college programme and new sewing centres and the supported volunteer group. These groups play a key role in the management of the organisation and are responsible for the individual areas of work. Being involved in these groups enables the volunteers to be involved in decision making and formulation of policy. Each volunteer is invited to participate in at least one, preferably more, of these groups. The role and tasks that each volunteer undertakes is to a large extent determined by which groups they become active in. There is a great deal of scope for the volunteers to develop their own initiatives and take responsibility in area s of interest to themselves.
Other Tasks: Each volunteer takes it in turn to cook lunch for all the volunteers at the organization. The meals must be vegetarian and suitable for people with Celiac Disease. Volunteers who have difficulty with this will receive training from the organization core volunteers or from current EVS volunteers.
Each volunteer assists in drawing up a work plan. This sets out their responsibilities and duties, as well as any deadlines and targets. These plans are formulated to meet the needs and interests of the volunteer as far as possible. These plans are reviewed with the volunteer and changes can be made if the volunteer so wishes. They provide the volunteer the opportunity to discuss their learning goals and experiences.
Each volunteer is encouraged to participate in monthly management meetings to discuss and decide on strategic issues for the organisation.
The volunteers will also be encouraged to be involved in the selection of future EVS volunteers.
This is not a comprehensive list of all the tasks that the volunteers will be involved with but hopefully indicate the range of tasks available.
There are also possibilities to create new activities. A few years ago an EVS took on organising an Arts Exhibition at the organization with local artist. It was a great success.
