Resumo: The town is situated in South-East of Estonia, on the bank of the lake. It is the
administrative centre of the County. There are 43 000 people living in the County, with
15 000 living in the town. Tourism near the town is growing very fast.

Throughout the centuries the people of this town have somehow managed to hang on to their own
language – a language that is a bit different, and for which they are well-known and admired. It is,
after all, a remarkable asset. Võru folk themselves are a bit different too: they are more outspoken,
for a start, but more open and good-tempered too; sometimes naïve, perhaps, and occasionally
helpless in the face of the world’s greed and duplicity. The people here value their own culture and
traditions and are proud of the fact that they are just that little bit different. Võru is very much a border
town, situated only 20 kilometres from both Latvia and Russia.

The life of the town has been enriched by the recently completed renovations to its cultural centre
Kannel and the new opportunities it presents, as well as its internationally recognized sports hall
and the range of opportunities it has to offer. The historical culture house is the venue for concerts,
theatrical performances and dance and club evenings. It also accommodates its own professional
theatre group in addition to the renowned cultural events it hosts. Moreover, the town has attracted great
international attention with its annual traditional folklore festival.

It was for proponents of another type of culture altogether – physical culture – that the town’s new,
contemporary sports hall was built, which provides an excellent location for organizing international
sporting events year-round. Võru is famed as a sporting town throughout Estonia and abroad as the
place where many successful track and field athletes, cross-country skiers, volleyball players and the
like have launched their careers.

The newly renovated Tamula lake beach area is highly praised for its fascinating architectural
solutions, beautiful design and playgrounds, including a 100m long romantic suspension bridge.
Near Võru is the Haanja Upland, which is the most ‘mountainous’ area of Estonia. Roughly 40%
of Estonian forests belong to the state and they are maintained, grown and managed by the other center. This cntre builds hiking trails, maintains accommodation facilities,
marks scenic recreational areas, and prepares camping sites and campfire places which can all be
found near the town too.
There are many different organisations in the County, who also host EVS volunteers. It gives the
possibility to communicate with other volunteers too.
Host placement is sometimes is located in a live-in community (not required), in which case rooms
are separately with shared kitchen.
