Resumo: EVS project is based in cultural node which works as a local train station at the same time. Since 2003 the organization has been transforming it into a centre of contemporary arts and cultural/social activities and this process is still on – we keep on expanding and improving our venue (new buildings S2 and S3)
Mainly operated by young people, the town impacts large group of people - children, young people, adults, artists and spectators, passengers and casual pedestrians. Uniqueness of the project lies in keeping the native function of the building as a train station, waiting room and place of ticket selling, connecting with using the space for creative artistic and social activities.
From 2010, we are working also on the reconstruction of national cultural heritage, Neolog Synagogue (built in 1930’s) in the city center which we aim to transform into the modern gallery of contemporary arts. This will even broaden span of our activities, thus possbilities of EVS volunteers to join various new projects.

EVS project should offer young people (EVS volunteers) the opportunity to identify common values with other young people from different countries. In this place grows international environment where the artists and visitors meet with a local community and European volunteers. This makes our venue an environment of cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue. This project brings opportunity to young people to participate in the civic life of their community and provide support for various forms of learning, creativity and expression.

The organization is located in the centre of north-west Slovakia with population of about 100 000 inhabitants, fourth largest town in Slovakia, 200 km from the capital Bratislava with connection to whole Europe and 50 km from the boarders of Czech Republic and Poland. This is a town with an interesting history, with cultural and educational traditions.

Geographic and Nature: the city lies on the point of confluence of three rivers and there are two water dams in its neighbourhood. A substantial part of the town is covered by hilly country with the elevation between 320-550m above sea level, surrounded by the mountain ranges of height up to 1700m.

There is a National Park (8,200 ha), 16 natural reservations and 6 protected natural phenomena ...
Weather: The average temperature ranges from 24 °C in summer to -10 °C in winter. The snow cover holds on 2 to 3 months a year.

Travelling: easy train and bus connection to all directions and to the capital cities Bratislava, Vienna (A), Prague (CZ) and Warsaw (PL).There is a very good public transport in the town, but the bicycle is the best solution. The District economy has a balanced structure with the even representation of all the branches. Industrial production concentrates on engineering (from May 2007 started production of big factory Kia Motors) and energetic, chemical industries, wood-working, textile industry and others. Tourist attractive are the mountains (Lesser Fatra and others), but also the thermal swimming pools in the small towns around the city. In winter time skiers are attracted to many ski-tours and lifts in winter skiing resorts. For the tourist traffic folk festivals are important, but also the unique folk architecture in the village Cicmany as well as the tinkers' exhibition at Budatin Castle - unique in the world. National cultural relics include many castles, churches, mansion houses and others. Culture in the town: 2 cinema halls, Municipal Theatre, Puppet Theatre, State Chamber Orchestra and concert hall, several music and dance clubs, 2 galleries with expositions of contemporary art, professional and amateur music bands, traditional folk groups, theatre companies, ...

Perfil: Activities of EVS volunteer in the organization take place mainly in multidisciplinary cultural node, so also the person of volunteer should be multidisciplinary and multitasking – organization of cultural events combined with educational and community activities and sometimes mixed with physical work during extending our spatial possibilities (DIY construction of new buildings). Intersting combination of conceptual, management and manual work forms rich environment full of impulses for any volunteer – local or foreign, with or without experience. We believe that everybody can find his/her role and tasks that will fit and fulfil one’s expectations and desire to help, learn and self-realize.

Apart from activities we suggest to the volunteers, they also have a possibility to build up own project or to join already running or planned project and to take responsibility for it – always according to volunteer’s previous field of study, experience and interest. Thanks to this, the volunteers have possbility to discover management of NGO working in the culture, as well as to discover contemporary art Slovak scene, experience fundraising, networking, international projects or PR. All EVS have opporunity to participate in any of the workshops that are taking in our venue and we have a system of mutual education within our team in order to share and exchange knowledge and experience in different areas of our work (technics, PR, management, fundraising, bar, art programming…).
Recruiting of the new volunteer is made upon the application (HEI published on the EVS database) and following intensive communication with the applicant via email and telephone.

Experience from our field of work is not required, but we like the volunteers with previous local voluntary experience in any NGO or local group, to have possibility to build upon it. Sometimes it happens that the volunteer has previous contact with our organization, usually from his personal travel experience or from his studies, as we are member of some international networks and known around Europe. The selection of the volunteer is made by the group decision and together with our board, to ensure the transparency. We try to find a good balance between the volunteer's profile, interests and wishes and the needs and wishes of our organisation. Even if we prefer to work with our established partners within the Trans Europe Halles network and promote EVS to young people who are active in our cultural centres, we do not in any way exclude young people who are not connected to a Trans Europe Halles member centre. We are expecting from the volunteer basic spoken English, French language or any Slave language is always a plus. The EVS duration should be about 9 - 12 months. We will always try to have balance between gender and diversity between countries where volunteers are coming from.

Tarefas: The main aim is to offer an opportunity for each volunteer during EVS in the organization to discover operation and different activities of socio-cultural centre, to develop her/his creativity, her/his knowledge about contemporary arts and to learn how to do and organize those activities. As well, we expect to learn from the volunteers about the art or youth work experiences she/he has gained. The local community will also benefit from the volunteer's presence in terms of intercultural learning. We would like the volunteer is involved in the daily work of the organisation, thanks to what she/he will be later able to build up her/his own project or to organize it in the limits and possibilities of the priorities of the organization.

Volunteer tasks :
The volunteer will work on preparation and organization of professional art performances and presentations, participate in socio-artistic activities in our venue. The practical and manual work to help to carry out these activities are common for every volunteer coming to the organization, but we also identified 3 different profiles of volunteer tasks in our organization:
Examples of volunteer activities:
Technical assistance - this profile is more oriented to the management of the space and technical set up. The volunteer will have some responsibilities with support of our technical responsible person. Main tasks are promotion, preparation of the performances, projections or debates, help with the sound and light installation, taking care of the gallery and preparation of the installation, keeping clean the space of centre, help with small reconstruction work in the station, management of stocks, shopping for the centre's needs. The volunteer will also take care of the info centre about art and youth activities and in our cafe/bar. She/he will also take part in other activities.

Project assistance - she/he will assist to members to prepare project, participate on organization and realization of the project. Each member of team is making own projects oriented in different field. Volunteer will also have chance to create his/her own project with assistance the team and develop her/his artistic and management capacity. We would like to give opportunity for volunteers with no experiences in arts or in children and youth work to take part in our EVS project that they can discover the work in a cultural centre. It's a way for the volunteer to feel well in this project, through doing in one hand something that she/he could assume or partly organize, and in the other hand to discover community and creative activities.

Atelier (artistic and educational workshops for children and adults) - she/he will assist our workshops leaders during the workshops we organize on a weekly basis or more intensive occasional weekend workshops. These events are dedicated to several age groups (pre-school kids, elemtary school pupils, high school students and adults). The volunteer will participate in pedagogical and practical preparation of the workshops and later on, when the volunteer will better understand the Slovak language, she/he will have the possibility build up and co-lead one own workshop.. The volunteer will be involved as organizer but as well as can participate in other creative workshops where she/he can develop her/his artistic skills. The volunteer will as well participate in activities of operation the centre that we describe bellow.
