Resumo: The host organization is located in a middle-sized town in Macedonian perspective, with less than 30.000 citizens. International volunteers have found this town to be perfect in terms of its size and convenient location.
The town is situated in central Macedonia's region, enjoying a convenient climate of hot summers and mild winters. Tikves has a long tradition in wine production, the most notable producer being winery - the biggest winery in Balkans located exactly in the town. The inhabitants are predominantly agriculterally oriented due to the opportunities that the good climate and rich land provide. There are few developed local industries, the predominant being the ferro-nickel factory. The town has about 35,000 inhabitants and is only 13 km from the main highway to Greece, which border is 80 km away. At the other side, it's only 100 km from the capitol Skopje, which is linked very well with 13 bus routes per day. In the town is a cultural house, sports hall, well-supplied shops, open market for fresh fruits and vegetables, a big hospital and other modern facilities.
The locals are very open minded and hospitable. The huge majority is Macedonian orthodox, but there are few Roma neighbourhoods in the town as well as Roma or Serbian communities in the surrounding villages. Past international volunteers often enjoyed a rich social life and found making friends quite easy.
There is rich night life during the weekends and almost every day during the summer school breaks. There are several night-bars and few discotheques active. The cinema and theatre do not have everyday presentations, rather few times during the month.
There are places for various sport activities, which includes several outdoor facilities and two sport halls - our office is actually located in the newer one. There is an Olympic size outdoor swimming pool, working only in the summer.
There are also lots of possibilities for hiking around the town, next to neighbouring villages.
Perfil: We are opened to host volunteers from any country. There are no particular skills needed, neither the age of volunteer is important, as long as it is in the range of 18-30. It is more important that the potential volunteers are open minded, interested in intercultural learning and ready to adjust to different life styles. This assumes that the volunteers should be interested in learning by doing, at the same time sharing own ideas and experiences. Naturally, for the final success of the projects, the volunteers are also expected to be initiatived, reliable and sensitive for acceptance of differences.
It is would be an additional plus if the volunteers would have some experience or at least strong interest to work with children and youth, including facilitating, organizing and leading workshops (non-formal education) and project development. A very basic knowledge of English, French or German is necessary, or at least some of former Yugoslavian languages, in order to have appropriate communication from the very beginning.
Tarefas: The volunteer will mainly be involved within various activities organized in the newly established Pro-Active Youth Club, which is to some extent continuation of the previous Babylon Children and Youth Center we were running from 2000 till 2007. The club work is coordinated by two full-time staff members - coordinator and assistant, facilitated by the local volunteers, in conjunction with the local primary and secondary schools. There are several non-formal activities that goes on at the regular basis, as well as lots of activities that are going to be organized according to specific period of the year, local traditions, important international dates or specific local or national events. There are three main target groups who participate in the Club: primary school students from the last two years - 13-14 years old, high school students - 15 to 18 years old and young proffessionals from 21 to 35 years.
As further extension, small youth clubs are going to be established in the period September - December 2010 in all primary schools (six) and high schools (three) in the town, where the EVS volunteers would be able to take very active role together with the local volunteers in preparation of initial activities and in facilitation of main activities.
This process is supported by the on-going long-term project on developing local youth policy and local youth work, which provides future youth workers with all necessary skills to prepare, organize and evaluate non-formal youth activities. The activities of Youth Clubs will be continuously supported by active engagement of these youth workers, most of them remaining active volunteers.
The EVS volunteer will easily become familiar with the on-going activities in the clubs. Every EVS volunteer will be paired with a local volunteer-youth worker, in order to ensure both, technical and personal support - complete intercultural exchange and transfer of skills and knowledge. Non-formal activities, as previously described, will be organized with the volunteer's assistance. Children, youngsters and young adults are the main focus groups, but there will also be organized specific trainings for parents and teachers who are members of the school youth clubs. Activities will be designed according to the focus groups needs and interests and will include both creative and techical approaches.
With the beginning of the new school year, the organization will also evaluated the need to re-start the previous program ( so-called 'big brother-big sister' ) where older primary school students assist their youngest colleagues in their spare time while preparing their home work. The program will be coordinated by a team consisted of local and EVS volunteers.
The volunteer's work, both local and EVS, is supervised by the local coordinator of the Youth Club. According to the new practice, in conjunction with the other organization, the volunteers will participate in the closest on-arrival, mid-term and final evaluation trainings. Beside the various learning opportunities offered through the regular club activities, during their service, EVS volunteers will have various opportunities to acquire additional knowledge and skills. For example, there would be a course about painting and art or a mosaic, which the organization would organize in conjunction with local artists, two times per week or a course about photography once per week. As per our usual practice, the volunteers would be given an opportunity to represent the organization at various local, national or international training events. They will need to attend regular meetings and workshops organized for all volunteers. The coordinator will also be responsible to ensure that appropriate language training is delivered at regular basis throughout the whole service. Bigger part of local volunteers has good English language knowledge, while some of them have also acquired good knowledge of the French and German. This is also valid for the major part of youngsters participating in our activities.
Therefore, the EVS volunteers will be able to offer language classes - in their native language - within the Youth Club. These informal lectures are also meant to provide the local volunteers with knowledge of a culture of the origin country of EVS volunteer. On the other side, within these activities, the EVS volunteers will be additionally challenged to practise Macedonian language more intensively.
According to the level of experience and skills, at some point the volunteer will be able to evaluate current and propose new activities in the club(s). This also assumes that they would be supported to establish links to other community groups, to develop new initiatives and ideas, to adopt good practices from their native countries, and even to create new long-term partnerships between the organization, their sending organizations and other associations that work at similar issues. The variety of programs that have been or currently are implemented by the organization offer wide opportunities for such initiatives.
The volunteer will usually work three hours in the morning and three hours in the afternoon shift, from Monday to Friday. These activities would be performed mainly in the Youth Club, while the necessary office work would be done in the office. ( They are located at different places ). In the mean while, they will be able to use the office for their professional and personal needs. The main office is located in the Sport Hall Jasmin, at last then five minutes walking distance from the flat(s) where the volunteer(s) would live. It is equipped with all necessary printing, copying and communication facilities, which includes 24-hours wireless Internet. It is officially opened from 8 AM to 8 PM, but the volunteers will have their own key and will also be able to use it before or after the official working hours. The Youth Club is located in the town center. Beside the big room for workshops equipped with all workshop facilities, there are also two offices - one for meetings and one for basic office work. There are similar facilities as in the main office, so some administrative work can also be done over there.
There is a regular staff meeting every Monday at 7 PM and the EVS volunteers are required to attend it
The volunteer will have free weekends and public holidays. In case she needs to participate at particular meeting, workshop or training, as a representative, it would be considered as a part of work tasks. In case it happens during the weekends, she will be informed appropriately on time. She would have right to use free days later according to her needs.
It happens at least once in a month that organization organizes activities during the weekends. The EVS volunteers would usually participate in them and in such cases they will have free day(s) in the coming week(s).
The volunteer will have intensive language training during the first month - two hours everyday, which will be reduced at three times per week during the next three months, and according to the needs till the end of the EVS project. As previously explained, it will be organized by our volunteers, already experienced in teaching Macedonian language for EVS volunteers. We would use the language books that US Peace Corps has prepared for their volunteers (with prior approval from their country office).
The volunteer will be provided with appropriate technical guidance regarding the use of all equipment in the office and in the Youth Club. She will receive the regulation books for both premises. In addition, he will have adequate introduction to the community, relevant stake-holders and partners.
The volunteer will also participate at the on-arrival training and mid-term trainings, organized in conjunction with the Resource Center.
