EVS volunteers are in touch with our network of young peoplewithin Europe. They advise on involving people in any conferences/joint participation schemes we are involved with.
They also go into schools and take part in the educational programme we run in the UK in the field of sustainable consumption. Following a workshop on food/waste/energy/global warming, pupils are invited to sign up to five pledges which they do for a month. The presenters find out what children and teachers are doing to be sustainable on their first visit. They return one month later, ask the same questions, discuss what impact doing these tasks for a month had on them and their family. They then award certificates.
Our office is located in UK, in a small rural town. Apart from 3 permanent adult staff the office is run mainly by about 8-10 young people who volunteer their time for a year. EVS volunteers and other volunteers from outside the UK live in a communal home where they cook, clean and look after themselves. They work in an adjacent office. There is a kitchen and dining area, laundry room, TV area, and male and female dorm rooms. Volunteers are expected to join in cooking/cleaning/shopping duties. They shop in the local market and are encouraged to use as little packaging as possible. They also recycle and compost.
There is a no smoking rule in all the buildings.
