Resumo: ECCSR is an umbrella organization. It covers 12 churches in Slovakia. Its member organizations and their local churches provide a lot of various activities. ECCSR already cooperates in this volunteering program with some of them. The local churches in Slovakia provide various activities that are unique places for the volunteers. They feel that there is a need besides their regular worship service to provide above standard service and free time activities during a week. The local churches with their activities are open for everybody who is interested in taking part in any activity as a participant or a leader no matter its religion, education, cultural background or nationality. Their door is open especially for those with poor social or economical background.

The volunteers serving in our member churches have an open space for various activities. One of the most frequent activities for EVS volunteer(s) is work with youth and kids. The activities consist of organizing and managing free time activities in several leisure centre clubs run by local churches (creative workshops; table tennis; table football; music; outdoor sport activities; table games; organizing and attending trips and camps; discussion on various topics and various leisure activities) together with other Slovak volunteers. Other sort of activities run by local churches is an area of working with seniors helping them in various activities and needs. Some local churches in the town participate on work with homeless people. This work with homeless might include some organizational help, providing food, clothes, etc with other local volunteers. .

Most of the centres and active churches are in the town but there are also local churches that are doing their activities in the other cities and countryside.
The town lies at the foot of the Small Carpathians and spreads out over 367.5 km2 on both sides on the largest European river, the Danube. With a population about 500 000 it is the largest town in Slovakia. The town has been the capital of the Slovak Republic since January 1st 1993, as well as the seat of the presidential office and the highest state offices, foreign embassies and the cultural centres of several countries. It’s most important industrial sectors are the petrochemical, automotive, mechanical engineering, electro-technical and food industries. The quality of life of the inhabitants of the town reaches the European average, and the unemployment rate is under 5%. The place where the town lies today has been a crossroads for long-distance trade routes since times immemorial therefore it has a rich history.

Many cultural institutions have their headquarters here: the Slovak National Gallery, the Slovak National Museum, the Slovak National Theatre and the Slovak Philharmonic. As well as national cultural institutions, the City Museum and the City Gallery, many other museums can be found here which display the art of the great masters, as well as contemporary art.

The town is the seat of universities and has around 60,000 students. It is home to many students attending several secondary and high schools, colleges or universities. More or less the town is a young person’s town. You can feel it when you go out on the town in the evening.

The renovated town centre is crammed with pubs, stylish cafes, restaurants, clubs and bars. The inhabitants of the town like to have fun and it is easy to get talking to them. Except some parks and lakes in the city there is a forest area surrounded some parts of the city where people can spend some free time. The city also offers various sport facilities as tennis, squash, swimming, ice – hockey, skating, basketball, volleyball, football, horse riding, skiing, cycling, hiking, golf, fitness etc.

The town is a good intersection for travelling. It is good to travel to other cities in Slovakia and other European cities like Budapest, Vienna the seat of universities. The nature and surroundings of the town are also beautiful and suitable for relaxing.
During a leisure time, besides the working activities, the volunteers can attend lots of various meetings offered by churches (mainly youth) and due to it they can be better integrated into Slovak community. ECCSR also coordinates the other volunteers from its partner organisations therefore they are more international volunteers around doing common activities, seminars and sharing accommodation.
We suppose that the volunteers who are taking part in our placements will respect the Christian standards and values that are bases of church mission.

Recruitment is done by coordinator of the programme in a recruitment process. The organization together with 18 organisations from 16 countries that cooperate closely on exchanging volunteers. In case there are more candidates for particular country representative of hosting organisation is attending Interview/Discernment event and has an opportunity to meet and recruit candidates for European Voluntary Service; conduct an interview with everybody; have a personal contact in order to ensure the best match as possible for the placement. Before the event Interview/Discernment starts candidates for EVS program are contacted and informed (by sending organization) ahead about the possibilities in the particular country. During the interview the volunteers receive information about the program as a whole, the placements and country so they can be familiar with the details of the project before they make any decision to participate at Youth in Action program – EVS in concrete country and placement. Another possibility of contacting candidates for EVS is via SKYPE, phone or e-mail with a help of sending organization.

ECCSR focuses on finding out what each young person offers (his/her abilities) and where he/she can imagine spending a time for 11 or 12 months. During recruiting process ECCSR tries to talk individually with each candidate about his/her gifts, talents, skills and passions trying to find the motivation and the best match with the hosting placement as possible.
Recruitment process is done carefully with spending some time with each candidate for EVS. We want to find out his/her motivation, expectations. We try to have a personal contact with everyone, if needed one to one confidential conversation etc. Interview can give us more information about applicant’s level of the commitment. All organisations maintain the overall accessibility of EVS for all young people, without prejudice related to ethnic group, religion, sexual orientation or political opinion.
When decision is done both, the volunteer and the hosting organisation with the coordination of ECCSR, have to approve the final decision. Only after the both sides give a positive approval the volunteer is accepted in the program and is consecutively prepared for his or her stay in the volunteering program in Slovakia.
Though ECCSR prefers partners from EDYN because of common objectives, goals and standards, the organization is open to cooperate also with the other sending organization that can assure a good preparation of the volunteer.

Tarefas: By hosting international volunteer we aim to implement new ideas of working with issues, that are important for society, but at the same time they haven’t been solved or properly discussed. Organization will provide a space to the volunteers to use their talents and skills. Coordinator of the project proposes to mix both, international and national volunteers and appreciates cultural exchange that volunteers bring to the hosting organisation. To host international volunteer in the project opens an opportunity to share experiences reciprocally among the volunteers, employees and clients. There is a space for a great exange of the international cultures.

Learning objectives for the volunteers:
During EVS, volunteers undergo a process of learning and development. They are supported through seminars organised and offered by both the hosting and sending organisations. The objectives of each learning experience – in-service, individual and group learning – are to enhance the following:
‏ personal and spiritual development;
‏ intercultural learning;
‏ learning new languages;
‏ ecumenical learning; enhancing social skills;
‏ gaining new experience with trained professionals;
‏ awareness of social and political responsibility;
‏ faith journey;
‏ creativity and working skills;
‏ communication and work skills within a group setting;
‏ teamwork skill with other youngsters;
‏ making new friends and acquaintances;
‏ gaining useful and self-building experiences;
‏ life and career discernment, etc.

The volunteers will be in a close communication and cooperation with the other EVS volunteers during their EVS year who take a part in our project. Besides their activity, leisure time we provide for all of them various seminars and activities together with the personal support in a non formal learning process.
Before the volunteers start their activities in the concrete area they get a general orientation on the possible activities. They will get instructions about activities and structure of the organization and meet the project coordinator who will discuss the possibilities of the involvement of the volunteer and see the preference and ability on the side of the volunteers. The preferences consist in the skills, education level and inclination of the volunteer.
The hosting organisation gives appropriate support to volunteers through the supervisors and mentor who encourage the volunteers to bring and develop a new project and give a continual support to the volunteer during his/her stay.

The role of EVS volunteers in the Host Organisation: the volunteers will be serving as assistants, right hand of the leaders and other volunteers serving in the activities. As soon as they adapt within a local community they are invited to bring some special practices from their own culture (another way of thinking, new ideas etc.) to make the local people more tolerant towards other cultures and to widen their way of thinking and worldview. After getting used to the local environment – probably from the second term of their service – they can offer some mini-projects of their own to embed customs and habits out of the custom. The volunteers will be receiving and giving at the same time.

The activities in which the volunteers could be involved:
- free time activities for various groups (kids; teenagers; youth; mothers and their babies; the middle age generation) organizing free time activities; playing various indoor and outdoor games and sports; watching movies; discussions on various topics; helping with the organization of programmes; meetings; workshops; camps; trips for the youth and kids; and also taking part in them; etc.;
- activities, meetings and help for seniors (handcrafts; accompany singing on musical instrument during devotions; shopping; cleaning; conversation; etc
- work with risky kids who spend their free time on the streets (children and youth visit the centres after the classes in the afternoon and during the weekends and summer holidays). The activities are table games; handcrafts; various indoor and outdoor sport activities; using PC; Internet etc.;
- assistance in the foreign department of the bishop office: accompany visitors; help with communication; help with organizing conferences; seminars, etc.;
- church related schools – free time activities (sport, games, workshops); help with discussion in a foreign language; etc.;
- homeless people – helping with managing and serving meal; managing collection of clothes and useful things; etc.;
- assistance for coordinator of the program (helping with PR, website, workshops, etc.)

All these activities mentioned above are open for our volunteers and it will be decided before the project starts which activities are available for the EVS. It is very welcomed and supported when the volunteers learn and speak at least basic Slovak language which creates a bigger space for the activities.
Monitoring and evaluation are important to measure the effectiveness of the hosting the international volunteer. Both, the project coordinator and volunteer are involved in evaluating of volunteer’s work; improvements or difficulties as well. It is also preferable that the results of these meetings are communicated to all people involved in the project. They will be also aware of any changes that might be implemented. The whole EVS is an invaluable non formal learning process for whole stakeholders in the project.
