Resumo: The organization is situated in a large industrial and cultural centre of the Russian North-West. The city is situated on the shores of a lake, one of the biggest inner lakes in Europe. It is one of the 48 officially recognized university towns of Russia. Many of the city innovations in the field of secondary education and work with young people have been adopted on the national level. It is also one of the most theatre cities in Russia (5 theatres per 267 thousand population); folk culture is quite popular here as well. This is a city of active international relations, a centre of one of five Russian regions bordering the European Union. The city maintains contacts with 11 sister- and partner- cities in 9 countries of the world. The city is a city giving priority to business and entrepreneurship development. Finally, the city is a northern city, demonstrating the bright features of Nordic mentality - calmness, benevolence, national and religious tolerance, and thoughtfulness for nature. So, the city is truly beloved by its citizens and will create pleasant impression upon volunteers living here. There are many opportunities for sport activities in our town: fitness-clubs, stadiums, ice rings, snow skiing , tennis courts, a swimming pool, a go-cart track, a rock-climbing wall. Some leisure and sport activities are fee-paying and some are free of charge. People, who want to plunge into the cultural life of the town, can visit several theatres, a Philharmonic Hall, where it is possible to see internationally acclaimed artists taking part in concerts of classical music. There are several museums, cinemas and exhibition halls in the city. It also famous for its historical monuments and nature reserves. Tourists from different countries visit Kizhi Island to see its outstanding wooden architecture. You can enjoy numerous lakes, a thick forest full of picturesque rocks – this beautiful landscape is very attractive for outdoor recreation. There are many cafes, night-clubs, cinemas in the city. Volunteers can visit concerts of rock and folk music, various dance parties. In summertime we generally have outdoor city celebrations, where you can buy hand-made souvenirs, dance, listen to live music. The average temperature in the city in summer is 20-25 degrees above zero, in autumn and spring – about 5-15 degrees above zero and in winter (that begins in November and ends in March) up to 30 degrees below zero. It is possible to swim, backpack, go rafting and fishing in summer, while in winter you can go skiing or skating.
Perfil: Volunteers are selected through selection process for participation in the project. The selection process involves a written CV, Motivation letter and possibly an interview via skype/telephone. Volunteers are asked to fill in certain form of CV where they have opportunity to present their background and skills, as well as to express their motivation to do EVS project in our organization, motivation to volunteer and to discover Russia. Opinion of sending organization on the candidate is also taken into account during selection process. All the candidates are presented to the hosting organization and they volunteer is selected on the following criteria:
- motivation to work with youth and children;
- readiness to learn Russian and to communicate in Russian; knowledge of (some) Russian is advisable.
- readiness to promote culture;
- organizing skills; creativity and artistic skills (drawing, singing, dancing) are welcome.
-Age: 18 until 30 years old
Tarefas: First of all it is significant to mention that before volunteers come there is a meeting of all staff members and Russian volunteers involved in the project. They plan activities for the next year within the project and for volunteers to adopt; and share responsibilities. The project will give the experience of international work for the volunteers, as well as practice in communication with people from different background. During the project the volunteers will practice public presentation skills, project management, individual consulting, and work in a team. Besides the volunteers will improve their linguistic skills. The project will help volunteers to break stereotypes. The volunteer would be an additional person who could add his/her ideas to create an intercultural and multilingual dimension for the project. Usually volunteers are required to have some special skills to succeed in implementing the project, they will also need to speak some Russian to adopt to the Russian reality, to communicate easily to people that will surround them, that is why we will offer Russian courses to them as soon as they arrive to the city. If volunteers need any special skills and experience to implement the project that they will not have when they arrive, specialist of Centre will be glad to offer volunteers special training – on specifics of work, intercultural communication or working with children. They are also shown various methods of organizing activities and may choose which they consider to be more suitable. There will be trainees who will help volunteers with implementation of the project, preparing activities and etc. We will attract Russian volunteers and will have some budget from Centre to develop the project. It is significant to mention evaluation and reflection process Volunteers will meet weekly with coordinator responsible for the implementation of the project. Volunteers will be asked for the feedback, it is vital to know what difficulties volunteers face, if there are any wishes, questions. They will analyse together achieved results and make plans for the future. The coordinator responsible for the volunteers will be able to stimulate and inspire volunteers.
The daily work with youth offers a wide variety of exchange possibilities (music and songs, dance, storytelling & of course, literature…). Creating an open mind and an interest in discovering other languages and countries is achieved so in a very natural way based on a daily contact and exchange - it becomes a sort of natural effect of becoming familiar with each other. Volunteers will participate in the following activities:
- preparing the events of the Language Club for young and adult people (choosing the main theme, making up the scenario, looking for interesting materials, preparing some decoration). We are planning to organize the following events: the day of national games, the mind game for children, the international camp for children, the international summer school, the events connected to different holiday (April Fools Day, Earth Day), the events for children Young Learners, working with children from orphanages of Karelian region and children with the physical and mental disabilities.
- preparing and carrying the series of master classes of different languages with the native speakers (English, German, Turkish, Spanish, etc.),
- preparing and carrying out the events for schoolchildren (choosing the main theme, making up the scenario, looking for interesting materials, preparing some decoration),
- organizing the work of the English Discussion Club (choosing topics, leading the discussions).
All the volunteers are expected to participate in implementing the events of the Language Club. The volunteers will be free in choosing the themes and the activities of the events. Volunteers will have all the needed facilities, for example they may use computer, laptops, notebooks, printer, stationery (paper, scissors and etc.). Everyday activities beside work: Russian volunteers and mentors try to involve the volunteers into the social and cultural life of the city. They offer the EVS volunteers different activities, such as visiting theatres, cinemas, museums, concerts, night clubs and so on. There are also a lot of interesting activities in School of the Russian language Enjoy Russian for example Food party, Welcome party, excursions and so on, EVS volunteers may join them.
Host families also play an important role in the everyday life of the volunteers. A lot of volunteers become good friends with the host family and continue to communicate even after the end of the project. Volunteers have choice: they can stay in the city and enjoy their holidays here as there are a lot of places to visit in Karelia or visit other places in Russia, we are ready to consult them on travelling opportunities. They can use 2 days per month separately or accumulate them and use in future. It is up to them to decide what is better. An example of regular working week schedule:
Monday (10:00-11:00 meeting with tutor for planning of activity; 11:00-13:00 preparation for the volunteers project activity (for example, cross-cultural event for secondary school); 13.00 – 15.00 lunch ; 15.00 – 17.00 preparation for the volunteers – project activity; 17.00 – 18.30 Visiting office (meeting with the coordinator, internet, phone calls))

Thursday (10.00 – 11.00 – meeting with tutor for planning of activity; 11.00 – 13.00 help for office stuff to prepare cultural activities; 13.00 – 15.00 lunch, 15.00 – 17.00 help for office staff to prepare cultural activities; 17.00 – 18.30 Russian lesson)
Friday (10 :00-13 :00 visiting culture center together with local youth and children; Free; 17.00 – 18.30 meetings with local community (mentor, student, pupils))
