Resumo: The hostel is located in the heart of the city witch is a cultural hub in the region, boasting an acclaimed international music festival as well as established Fringe, Literature, Guitar and Film festivals at various times during the year. It is also a regional shopping centre, hosting a famous Christmas market and numerous independent specialist shops. Within this glamorous and wealthy City, however, there are areas of real poverty and need. Much of the work carried out by the youth programme are focussed around these areas with the intention of providing affordable childcare, quality play provision, community-based health and fitness work and local facilities to parts of the local community who may have historically been disregarded and be socially and economically disadvantaged.
Our volunteers have the opportunity to gain experience of working in a number of our departments, living independently in the shared flat in central and getting to know the local culture through their work and friendships during their placement. The volunteers work closely with a number of staff but also get to know most of the other staff through their life in the organization. We encourage all volunteers to attend a local language course and get involved with other activities they might enjoy which are available locally. We also send volunteers on as many other courses as we can, such as a local government run playwork course and any food hygiene courses (or other type of work related training). The experience of hosting the EVS project is closely in line with the aims and purposes of the organization, through supporting young people in order to build a better future and the scheme is therefore a natural extension to our normal work. The organization, like all, has always endeavoured to develop and maintain strong internation links.
Perfil: Age: 18 until 30 years old
Tarefas: The role of the volunteers centres around our children’s work so they provide support to the nursery, three after school clubs and holiday clubs. We do also encourage volunteers to gain experience in the other departments depending on what their interests are and whether there are any specific skills they would like to develop during their placement in additional to their core activities.
The main activities include working in the following departments:
Nursery: Working alongside trained nursery staff, volunteers will talk and play with children aged 18months-4yrs during free play sessions, supervise small groups of children in arts &crafts, messy/water play, read books/tell stories to children, play outdoors, assist with care activities such as putting on coats, blowing noses, preparing and supervising snacks and clearing away. Volunteers undergo a full staff induction at Nursery, and as they become more confident in the work they are offered extra training and responsibility if desired- this may include first aid training, outdoor play courses, etc.
After School Clubs: Again working alongside trained staff, volunteers are placed at one of three clubs run by the organization within local primary schools offering after school provision to children aged 4-11yrs.Sessions last for up to three hours and include setting up the area, free play (including board games, imaginative play, cards etc), outdoor play (both structured games and free play), arts and crafts activities, snack preparation and clearing away. Training will include, where possible, an accredited play training course as well as less formal training from our experienced play leaders. Volunteers are encouraged to lead activities based on aspects of their own culture or interests.
Holiday Club: The role in the holiday club is very similar to the after school clubs, however the sessions are structured differently as holiday club runs for a full day. Volunteers normally work either in the morning or the afternoon, the shifts are approximately five hours long. Sometimes however they do work in the club all day if there are trips to local points of interest or tourist activities.
The work in the nursery, After School Clubs and Holiday Club form the core activities of the project, however when the volunteer is more comfortable and established in their role with us, we would we encourage the volunteers to get involved in other departments. The main departments our volunteers normally choose to gain experience in are:
Health & Fitness: The organization fitness suite is available to volunteers to use free for the duration of their stay, but they may wish to choose to “shadow” trained staff, learning how to use machines, communicate with customers, book clients in to facilities, etc. Volunteers can choose to further develop this as work at our youth centre, where we run an affordable fitness programme called Activate which aims to bring healthy lifestyle messages to groups who may not otherwise have access to a gym or tuition. Volunteers can help develop fitness plans and motivate clients here, and as their skills and confidence develop, and under the care of a trained member of staff, they may go on to lead classes and demonstrate activities to clients. This develops leadership and presentation skills as well as organisation and teamwork.
Hostel: Volunteers may choose to learn more about the hostel’s workings by working at reception, where they get an overview of a busy hostel with over 200 beds. They may wish to see more of the administrative roles performed, and have in the past helped in the main office or planning menus at the restaurant. They have the opportunity to practice their language skills on the telephone and computer, and to broaden their relationships with the large staff. thereby increasing cultural discussion and personal confidence. They also have the opportunity to develop their computer skills using general software including Microsoft Office and also the department’s specific software, for example Hostel World.
Other Nurseries: As part of our organisation we also have three other nurseries in nearby towns. These three nurseries are all larger than our nursery and care for the children in rooms seperated into age groups. The nurseries all accept children from three months to five years old so the volunteers have the opportunity to work with the younger ones as well. The travel is slightly further than the other activities which helps to increase the volunteers knowledge of the local area and also their confidence.
