Perfil: We select volunteers according to the Youth in Action Guidelines. This means that we look for volunteer candidates aged between 18 and 30* years and who are legally residing in a Programme Country or in a Partner Country. We seek a balance of varied ages, genders, opportunities and nationalities amongst our EVS volunteers. Vacant EVS placements in the host projects are advertised on the Europa website, the website, Youth Networks website and Sending Org networks who have contacted us in previous years. Emails/Faxes/Phone calls expressing interest in the projects are responded to promptly. Each interested volunteer candidate is informed of the requirements and deadlines for application.

In order to fairly assess each candidate’s suitability for each project, we ask each candidate to complete the Application form which asks the following questions:

1. A volunteers motivation for applying to do EVS
2. A volunteers motivation for applying to the project
3. The volunteers general understanding of the factors that lead people to become homeless with reference to the particular client group of the project
4. The challenges that the volunteer anticipates when working in our projects
5. The skills and abilities a volunteer feels they will bring to the project
6. Their understanding of the role of the EVS volunteer in the project

Tarefas: Volunteers are encouraged to consult with staff and service users in regular meetings to identify what activities would be of most benefit. Staff can also use in key-working a holistic “Outcomes Star”™ system to identify individual support needs for residents and where volunteers can assist. The volunteer can act as a peer supporter to individuals or provide group work. Volunteers can also provide social activities to reduce alienation within the project. Activities should be interesting and fun but most of all worthwhile. Many service users struggle with many basic aspects of life so the volunteer programme should support, educate and develop each individual. The “Outcomes Star”™ system identifies areas such as managing money, taking responsibility or self care and living skills. Volunteers can help by creating supportive activities that will help build new skills and boost confidence so the individual can work towards personal development in key areas. Volunteers will be supported to record the activity with the services users so they can see the development of their work and positive impact of their involvement. We have developed “Volunteer Activity Forms” throughout the organisation for this purpose.

Volunteers should also consider the Annual & National Priorities when developing activities. The organization has considered tackling unemployment, fight against poverty and marginalisation, promotion of a healthier lifestyle as a priority for volunteer activities. We will support volunteers to develop their role, activity and tasks (for example healthier lifestyle projects, parenting skills, development of resettlement skills etc) in line with these priorities. All volunteer work and learning is recorded for Youthpass.
