Resumo: The host organization is located in city with 505.067 people. There are three language groups present in the province: German speakers with 69,15%, Italian 26,47% and Ladin 4,37%.
The city is the largest town of the Province and October 9 of 2011 (the day of reference for the Census of the population) had 102.269 inhabitants, 48.866 men and 54.003 women. 73,80% of the people who are living in the capital city of Bolzano belong to the Italian linguistic group, 25,52% to the German and 0,68% to the Ladin.
In this moment, two structural phenomena are of particular concern in South Tyrol: the rise of inequality and the feeling of a generalized impoverishment, not only from the point of view of income, but also from the expectations and cultural resources.
In the early month of 2010, it was widely argued that the economic crisis was being overcome, but the problem still appears in all its severity und it faces us with the difficulties of unemployed people and impoverished families. The host organization and also the parishes are aware about this because of the services they offer (for people in debt, the listening center or facilities for homeless people).
At the end of 2011, 44.362 foreigners, including EU-citizens (UE-27), were living permanently in the province of Bolzano (a total of 8,7% of the inhabitants). This number has increased by 6,4% from the year before. Bolzano recorded an incidence of 13,7% foreigners, probably caused by its relatively good employment situation. In the capital of Bolzano, there are living 14.413 immigrants, a third (32.5%) of all foreigners living in South Tyrol.
The fact that in Alto Adige there are living people from 134 different nations determines the heterogeneity and cultural diversity of our society. 14.238 persons, almost a third of foreigners resident in the province of Bolzano, are EU citizens; 43.9% of these comes from the German culture. Another third comes from other European countries outside the EU, while 7.329 comes from Asia (16,5%) and Africa 5.624 (12,7%). Approximately 50% of the foreigners are between 25 and 45 years old. About 30%, not much more than Italian citizens, are children or young people.
The large number of researches conducted on the youth culture in Italy and in Europe have shown a decrease interest towards active political and social participation of young generations. More interest is shown towards associations, even though more and more often young people tend to diminish their participation also in this field. In other words, in developed societies young people demonstrate a limited interest in the chances and future of the society. As a consequence, the full exercise of young people’s rights and duties as citizens is likely to be jeopardized.
In the province of Bolzano there was conducted a census about youth attitude towards politics - which do not correspond to political institutions but to decision making processes regarding community life. The census has shown a limited interest in political issues. Only 6,2% are interested in politics at local level, 6,8% at provincial level, 8,9% at national level and 12,0% at internatioanl level.
Nonetheless, education issues have appeared to be of major interest, amounting to 71,2%, other topics are of minor interest. For example, one third of young people participating in the survey are interested in human rights, 30% are interested in peace and disarmement and one fifth in women’s rights and problems related to globalizations.
The South Tyrolean youth doesn’t show a great interest towards social issues. Large groups of young people show no interest in politics – at the local, national or international level – nor in social issues, environmental or social ethic issues.
Regarding membership in associations: about half of the 14 to 25-year-olds is member of a sports association, one fourth is member of a cultural or free time association, students’ association or youth association. Only a very small percentage is part of a group representing strong values as environmental protection (4,0%), political associations (3,4%) or protection of human rights (2,1%). A comparision with the survey of 1999 shows that membership in human rights associations is decreasing.
The offices of young are located in the main offices the host organization. Volunteers will be accommodated in rooms that are in the same building of the headquarters of the host organization. The organization has a total of three rooms available. All rooms are equipped with the necessary furniture and a private bathroom. In addition, volunteers have the opportunity to use a common kitchen, which is also used by some employees of the organization. Therefore it is very important to respect the house rules. It is important that the kitchen always remains clean, because it can be used in every moments from all employees.
Perfil: The project is open to all young people motivated to learn and deepen the social work and the issue of globalism. For the young project, volunteers should be interested to work with young people, schools and youth groups. Young people who have a particular interest in the issue of the reality of homeless people or even for the realities of refugees are also welcomed. Volunteers should be open-minded, show interest and willingness to work in a team and should be interested in social and intercultural issues.
It would be an advantage if the volunteers already have basic knowledge of German and/or Italian, but this is not an essential requirement. It could be helpful for the volunteers, because the environment is already bilingual.
Tarefas: Volunteering is an experience that unites and enriches ourselves and others: we can put our skills at the service of a good cause, enjoy new experiences, meet other people and life stories, contribute to positive change in society without an immediate economic self-interest but getting respect and appreciation. The volunteers will work together with the team of young, but do not replace a member of staff. They will always be accompanied by a member of the host organization and will not have big responsibilities in the service. For young the mutual exchange is of great importance: Since the volunteers are part of the target group of young, their contribution will be very interesting and it enriches the work with new ideas and input.
Horário: The young volunteers will work 30-35 hours/week, from Monday to Friday. Sometimes the volunteers will be requested to work also during weekends. In any case the volunteers will not work more than 5 days/week and will always have 2 days off. A typical working day could be scheduled in the following way:
9-11 hrs Preparation of information and education materials
(for the seminars of the “visite di solidarietà”, workshops in schools, workshops in summer camps, project presentations, ..)
11-13 hrs Visits and evaluation of different projects
(visiting the volunteers working within the project “regalare tempo”, presenting the project “corsa dei miracoli” in schools, participating in the seminars of the “visite di solidarietà)
