Resumo: The city, with a population of almost 300 thousand It is the administrative, economic, and academic center of the region, which, due to its exceptional environmental assets, has been included into a special ecological area termed the Green Lungs of Poland. The location in the environmentally clean region, full of tourist attractions, as well as the rich infrastructure of the city, makes the city and surrounding area a great place for living, recreation and development of tourism. The city has evolved as a place, which is the melting pot of different nations, religions, cultures, customs, and traditions, where the occidental rationalism meets the oriental mysticism. Unlike other big cities in Poland and the rest of Europe, young people during the evenings like riding bikes, walking, going to the cinemas and cafe, and playing different sports.

The school is located in the midtown and it is an important place for handicap and retarded children from all over region, who have a chance to take their education here. This place can play such crucial role due to its very well qualified team of teachers and therapists, the facilities, which we constantly modernize. In our school the kids can use, to mention few, things like: housework workshop, studio of Tomatis’s method therapy, experiencing the world studio, place for rehabilitation (gym, swimmingpool) etc. The whole building is adjusted to the needs and safety of all students.

Because of the specific work we organize as well as take part in different events which are held in our school, our town and in Poland ex: music, theatre and art festivals, sports events, therapeutic and rehabilitations camps. In our school there are 3 different associations working for mentally handicapped of our society: – working at different fields (art, theatre, sport) – (wooden, craft and art work) and The Special Olympics – (sport). All the pupils and most of the teachers are involved with these associations. It plays a huge role in their lives. So the volunteers will be able to help during those events. As the special center is a specific place to work it introduces all involved people into the main idea and specific of the work with mentally handicapped children. That’s the chance the EVS volunteers are given too.

The volunteer will be provided in all kinds of support that’s needed at work and in a daily life. The volunteer will get the pocket money and the money for the food, bus ticket, will have polish lessons. The possible accommodation is the private apartment shared with other volunteers or polish students. In exceptional cases the volunteer will live in dormitory.

Perfil: We would like to host someonew, who wants to help the others, who is open for new activities, who wants to try to work with different age groups. Because the special centre is a special organisation, we would like to host someone who is not afraid of contact with mentally and phisicly handicapped. Volunteers are not allowed to smoke and drink alcohol in the project. In the hosting organisation are English speaking employees, so it would be good if the EVS volunteer speaks (at least basic) this language.

We would like someone interested in Poland, who is aware of being as an ambassador of its own country, and in some ways is the model for the teenagers in the local community. While it’s the social projects we need someone who is very open and "warm" person, who doesn’t have the problems with making new contacts.

Some artistic skills would be helpful (arts and crafts, music etc.). And at the end, we would like to have someone who is creative, who would like to improve The Special Educational Centre live with his/her knowledge. Volunteers who don’t have the necessary qualifications will have the opportunity of being active in creating and sharing his/her ability e.g. Playing musical instruments, knowing some new art’s methods etc. We will be happy to receive from the volunteers any proposal, which would enrich projects to work with children. We are sure, that very often the volunteers have great ideas, which is very precious in the work of our organization.

Because of the specific work of our centre we are not open to hosting volunteers with fewer opportunities. We can only accept volunteer which has the capability of working with mentally handicapped interns. All interested people are asked to send us their resume (cv + cover letter). We’ll also ask to fill in the special form, containing more detailed questions about the motivation of the volunteer. The coordinating organization will pass them to the hosting organization. The final decision will be made by the stuff of the school involved in the project and working directly with the volunteers.

Age: 18 until 30 years old

Tarefas: - assistance for teachers leading daily activity
- helping in the computer classes (learning the simplest programs and Internet) and art
- assistance in outdoor activities - assistance during meal-time
- individual projects in cooperation with 3 associations working on behalf of handicap people.
