Resumo: The Homeless Families Project is two hostels that provide temporary accommodation to homeless families (ie. Ranging from expectant mother through to mother, father and children) the project has 14 / 18 self contained family units and families can stay for up to two years. There are large communal areas for the residents.
The displacement of families is due to any number of factors such as inappropriate living arrangements, overcrowding, domestic violence and bereavement. In addition, many family relationships break down resulting in the need for temporary accommodation. Some of our resident parents are very young themselves and have had very little life experience. It is important that families are kept together and provided with high levels of support during any period of transition.
Families are appointed a key worker to ensure they receive the appropriate support. A support plan (life skills, budgeting, parenting skills and health support) is developed between the resident and worker. The project provides the time and space during which families can address the issues which led to their housing crisis. The project supports families to gain practical skills which enable them to adapt to life after they have left the project.
Perfil: patient and motivated
Age: 18 until 30 years old
Tarefas: volunteers required for organizing and facilitating social involvement and activities for parents and their children (ages can range from babies to teenagers). Service users live in their own self contained apartments within the building so volunteers are required to provide activities to
encourage service users to socialize and gain new skills and experiences.
Activities could include: arts & crafts; quiz nights; organizing trips out; children’s activities; “life skills” such as basic cookery; health promotion such as good mental health or basic keep fit etc. Many of the children in the project may be below 3 years of age. Parents are responsible for their own children (there are no “babysitting” facilities) and this can make it difficult for them to engage in activities.
Condições: Volunteers are housed in rented accommodation. They live in a house with shared, kitchen, living room and bathroom. They will have their own bedrooms. All utensils, sheets, towels etc will be provided by the organization. The organization pays for all rent and heating bills for this house. Volunteers will be required to maintain cleanliness in the house and the house from time to time will be subject to agreed house checks by the volunteer co-ordinator.
Formação: Our projects are aimed at socially excluded people and in particular the homeless, drug users, offenders, youth, care leavers or those at risk within their local communities. We have hosted 2 full-time EVS volunteers in Northern Ireland since 2005 in our Stella Maris hostel and have hosted 2 more in our Homeless Families Project since 2008. We have a strong ethos of volunteering and initally the volunteer programme was established to enable local individuals to become involved with the work of the organisation. The programme aims to develop the skills of the volunteers whilst simultaneously enabling the association to offer a more multifaceted approach to our service.
By adding a European dimension to the volunteer programme we feel that our residents and working practice has greatly benefited from new cultural experiences. The EVS programme also offers the opportunity for young people using our services to volunteer abroad. We actively promote EVS to the participants of our "Drive Ahead" training project. The project is a free 10 week course to enable unemployed young people to gain skills to acess employment and get a driving and forklift license. The organization would fully assist any particpant in the sending process. Currently we host 10 EVS volunteers within our Dublin and the city services.
