Resumo: Project environment

Swansea is Wales' second-largest city, and sits on the five-mile sweep of Swansea Bay. An ideal base for exploring south-west Wales, there's also much on offer for visitors in Swansea itself. To the west of Swansea is the Gower peninsula. Known locally simply as “gower” the peninsula was the first area of Britain to be designated and protected as an Area of Outstanding Natural beauty. The golden sandy beaches are a very popular surfing destination.

Swansea's well known for its vibrant nightlife, with a wide range of clubs, bars and restaurants to suit every age and taste. We have over 90 places to eat and drink, including family-friendly eatieries, bistro restaurants and modern cafe-bars. The Wind Street area is a modern café quarter by day, and by night, is the liveliest street in the city!

Volunteers will be expected to 30 hours each week. The majority of that time would be spent based in our city centre one-stop shop, a short walk from where volunteers would be living. We would also seek to provide them with the opportunity to work with some of our local youth centres. Work may involve working some evening work.

Swansea Councils’ Young People’s Service works young people in a variety of setting across the City & County of Swansea, a particular emphasis is currently place on young people who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) or at risk of becoming NEET.

Volunteers would need to be confident in working with young people who may be in an emotionally distressed state or demonstrate challenging behaviour.

Motivation and EVS experience

Info-Nation is the City & County of Swansea’s information, advice and support service for young people. We are part of the council’s Young People’s Services and offer a range of services and support though our city centre one-stop shop, work in local schools and youth projects, and through our work using digital media.

Our aim is:

To improve the health and well-being of young people in Swansea, by ensuring they have equitable access to the information, advice and support services that they need to make informed decisions about the lives they choose to live; enabling them to influence the world around them.

Developing an understanding of the world around them is a crucial part in enabling young people to participate more fully and exert an influence.

Over the past 3 years, we have sent 17 young people abroad through UNA Exchange, as part of their “Step By Step” international volunteering project. During this time we have developed a strong working relationship and a better understanding of how international volunteering projects can have an extremely positive impact on the lives of young people.

At the time of writing this, we have young people taking part in projects in Austria, Moldova, Latvia, France and Greece.

Description of the organisation:

The aim of Info-Nation has been stated above. We work with young people aged 11 to 25 in the following ways, in order to achieve that aim:
• Providing a one-stop-shop where young people can access information, advice and support services that are relevant, up-to-date and appropriate to their needs.
• Providing young people with access to the information and services they need, in the communities where they live and associate.
• Providing young people with the information they need through the use of digital media.
• Improving the access that young people have to mainstream services and enabling them to engage confidently with those services.
• Improving the accessibility of information and services for young people from disadvantaged communities.
The specific activities we are engaged in include:
• Provision of information and advice
• 1-2-1 support
• Workshops in local schools and young people’s organisations
• Drop-ins in local youth centres
• Condom distribution scheme
• Work club
• RAY (domestic and relationship abuse project)
• Access to other specialist services
o The Exchange (counselling)
o The Place (substance misuse)
o Integrated Sexual Health Clinic
o SCVS (local volunteering opportunities)

At present Info-Nation employs a Service Manager, 3 Information Workers, a Domestic Abuse Worker, 1 Trainee and a bank of Relief Staff able to provide cover as required. We also have a daily staff presence from The Place (Swansea’s young person’s substance misuse project).

As part of Swansea Council’s Young People’s Service, we work closely with the Youth Service and would envisage that any volunteering opportunity would involve some time spent in one of their youth centres.
