Resumo: Hoym is on the North East fringe of the Harz Mountains in the county district of Aschersleben-Stassfurt. Hoym is a small town with a population of 3,000. The main institution of the town is the castle where throughout the year festivals, podium discussions and other events take place; in line with the integration of the disabled in society. The nearest larger towns are: Aschersleben (population 34,000, adult education centre, sports clubs), Quedlinburg (population 19,000, theater) approx 10 kms distant. The Hoym Castle Association is the sponsor for homes which integrate people with mental and multiple disabilities. Following the long period before 1993 when the disabled were isolated and detained we are trying to give the inhabitants with mental and multiple disabilities as a life as possible. The basis for this is encouragement of the individual. To achieve this the communes support the following areas: activity groups, physical development, physiotherapy, leisure and occupational meeting place, learning centre and rehabilitation, psychological service.

Perfil: The volunteer should above all be open to working with disabled people. Previous experience is not necessary and it is more important that they are interested in the work and willing to get involved in this type of work. Communication is very important in our work.

Tarefas: "We want to give the volunteer plenty of space for his own ideas particularly in the area of leisure activities. New activities which will hopefully mirror the personality and home of the volunteer should be developed and put in place together with the colleagues. In this manner the volunteer will learn about himself and learn how to handle the disabled. For many volunteers it was also important to experience how different it can be to deal with authorities from Germany and his own country. The volunteers are bound firmly into the team, participate in discussions and can take part in internal courses. In addition to their own activities they can also accompany the disabled in their lives. For example in individual conversations during shopping trips or whilst cooking the inhabitants and volunteers can exchange thoughts. It would be useful if the volunteers could introduce games, music or literature from their home countries. The volunteer can be employed in the following areas: activity meeting (here the inhabitants can, for example, do carpentry and are prepared for work in the workshop). Physiotherapy/physical development: In the gymnasium or snoezel room, in the exercise pool or at dances or expeditions movement should be learned and experienced. Leisure and occupational meeting place: There are a variety of activties; moulding candles, playing music, theater group, artificial flowers arranging and much more. Learning centre: This is where they are prepared for life. There are computer courses, reading and maths courses, courses to read time, make-up courses, baking courses, foreign language and similar courses. Psychological service: The disabled and their relatives receive advice and support three times a week. Problems with accommodation, relationships, family and integration in society are priorities. Events take place once a week which are planned and organised by the patients with the help of the advisory office. In addition to the opportunities already mentioned, Schloss Hoym organises many activities which the volunteer can help to plan and organise. There is an annual Music Summer, at which choirs from all over Germany together with the Schloss Hoym Choir take part, an annual Nativity Play, a summer fete with a market, an October and Thanksgiving Festival and much more. We can imagine the volunteer helping with these as well.
