Resumo: Our cooperative organisation resides in a town of about 40.000 people. The town has a very particular geographical position. It is a lively town with several cultural and musical activities. Its historical centre is in a unique baroque style and is crowded with pubs and meeting places. Th town is one of Sicilies economically best developed towns and its economy is based on commerce, trade, tourism and manufacturing.

The Social Cooperative has been operating for more than twenty years in the field of Services to people holding a major role in the scenery of social quality. From the experience gained in the field of minors and its related troubles three branches were born: Research, Art and Culture, and Education and Planning.

THE PRINCIPLES WICH INSPIRE US ARE:

Fostering juvenile creativity to encourage a greater social protagonism

Fostering sound life styles and positive behavioural models

Fostering the culture of tolerance and multiculturality

Supporting intergenerational relations within the family and the social community.

THE INSITUTION MISSION is, through its different branches and several services, to pursue Social Quality by promoting educational projects according to the new directives in the welfare field and by creating a network to foster work with both the individual and the public. The core of the work within a Lodging Community is to put into effect those projects of social inclusion addressed to needy youth.

ACTIONS AND ORGANIZED ACTIVITIES:

Schooling and scholastic support

Games and sports

Educational activities and labs

Artistic and cultural activities involving the local community

THE CONTEXT.

It creates a familiar environment nevertheless without simulating the family. It is an educational agency which offers experiences of both independence and unity and puts itself as a place able to support the growth of the personal identity of each guest from either the affective than the material point of view. The Community is there, in general, to answer to social needs strictly connected to education: hosting, upon request of the Juvenile Court, those minors who lack of a well balanced familiar environment able to assure their normal growth. The life experiences a child goes through in the first years of his life, form affective-cognitive-relational and expressive foundations which will inevitably affect the construction of his own personality. In this prospect, dealing with minors having personality destructuring problems, the equipe's priority object is to help the minors in the progressive restructure of positive capabilities, creating new foundations to live a not marginal existence thus avoiding deviancy. Therefore the Community has the delicate task to stimulate in each guest significant changes in their personality, in their capacity to have relations and in their social abilities in general, so that they can follow on their own a path, sometimes interrupted, other times never begun, full of experiences and which will let them acquire independence and the ability to represent themselves. The Community has a complex social role due to the several aspects of its intervention which, for this reason, has to be developed at different levels. In order to reach this goal the operators take into account some fundamental aspects such as the psychological, social, affective and expressive growth of the minor entrusted to them.

Educative Relation: it enables a reassuring and significant relationship with adults, through which the minor lives a corrective emotional experience that helps him express his feelings. The adult's answers tend to modify relational qualities and manners as well as models altered by previous experiences through the emphasis of positive aspects and the proposal of shared rules.

The fulfilment of scholastic duties is one of the most important task, not only for the acquisition of basic knowledge, but for the individual and social growth given by the meeting and comparison with people of the same age coming from different familiar conditions and social classes. The relationship with teachers can constitute a cultural guide, but also an opportunity to learn the rules of common living.

The ludic activities and sport, in relation to the young age of the minors hosted, hold a substantial role in their cognitive and affective development. They foster socialization processes and creativity and they often hold a therapeutic function, allowing the canalization of aggressiveness into fair competition and sometimes giving a desires replacing satisfaction. Moreover, they allow the overcoming of anxious moods caused by intrapsychic conflicts by means of their projection in a more controllable reality.

Perfil: We would like to host young people who are at least 18-30 years old and, if possible, holders of a driving license, as it might be useful for us if they can also help in transporting. We would like to host someone ready to live and work in an institution for children and adolescents with difficult familiar situations. The volunteers should have an open, curious and tolerant mentality as they will be in ccontact with children and seniors.

They should have the sensitivity and the patience to listen to the children and seniors, to understand them and to create a relationship with them. It is important for the volunteers to be motivated and to have a spirit of initiative and adaptation. The volunteers will be chosen independently from their ethnical or religious group, from their sexual orientation and from their political views. The selection will not be based on professional or academical qualifications as will be considered a basic level of linguistic competence, the driving license and, especially, the will to work with children and seniors.

Tarefas:
we offer our support to allow the volunteers to actively help conceiving, planning and monitoring the mentioned activities. This comes down to a training about the theoretical and practical aspects of group dynamics plus the training done by attending the daily activities of the organisation (e.g. meetings).

through this experience the volunteers will be able to give a real support to those needy persons hosted by the Cooperative who, on the other hand, could facilitate the volunteers' integration; At the same time the volunteers will have the opportunity to experience teamwork, to develop their own autonomy and to test themselves.

the volunteers will also have the chance to learn the Italian language with the help of the Cooperative's staff and of the local community people. Moreover, participating to the cultural and social events promoted by the Cooperative for the guests and the local population, the volunteers will be able to confront themselves with these two realities and at the same time acquire new practical skills.

the volunteers take part to meetings for theoric and technical knowledges

at a more generic (cultural) level, we wish the volunteers to get to know the sicilian region and culture. On one hand the members of the Cooperative will suggest several book titles and show the surroundings and historical places, on the other the volunteers themselves should also keep eyes and ears open to discover the sicilian curiosities, places-to-be and typical cultural aspects

Role

After a first period of observation, reciprocal knowledge and introduction to different tasks, more and more space will be left to their original and autonomous intervention, so to make the most of their skills and experience. The tutors will guarantee that their tasks reflect their abilities and wishes, with all respect to the present project. A more detailed programme will be customised together with each volunteer and the organisations they come from, according to their educational background and experience, respecting their personal interests and specific skills.
