Resumo: Outline the project environment for the suggested voluntary Service, including the local community where the project will take place (e.g. geographical, social and economical environment). If the host placement is located in a live-in community, please include the rules and conditions that apply also for the volunteer.

The hosting organization is a child care center. They gather children from 0 till 3 years. The volunteer will take care of the children together with the staff. The volunteer will always work together with staffmembers in a group.
The mission of the organization is as following:
the organization is surrected for children whose parents work outside the house. In this situation the parents cannot look after their children during the day.
All children between 0 and 3 years old are welcome, every day from monday till friday from 7 o’clock in the morning till 6.30 in the evening.
Their attempt is to organise daycare that is oriented at the child and the family. The needs of the children are their main concern.
All children are welcome whatever their origin, race, life philosophy, cultural background.
Also children who are disabled are welcome.
They have all pedagogical qualities necessary for each individual child.
It is important that the children are feeling good and are happy.

The child care center is situated in a provincial town. It is situated in the Dutch speaking north-eastern part of Belgium. The town is known for its beautifull green environnement. The child care center is the only child care center. It is located in a green area, near the parc of the city. It is also near a home for elderly, with whom the organization does a project together. The twon has no trainstation but other public transport is availabel.

There are several youth clubs, youth centers, amateur arts associations, and clubs, where the volunteer can join.

The volunteer will need a certificate of good behaviour, a testimonial.
The volunteer needs also the necessary vaccinations. It is necessary that the volunteer brings a certificate of the doctor that he/she received this vaccinations. The vaccinations are:
- hepatitis A and B
- tetanus
- polio
- rubella
- mumps

The volunteer will need to undergo a medical examination for employment in Belgium. These are the same main conditions as the staff. This is obliged by the Belgium government because the volunteer will work with children
AFS, the coordinating organisation, will provide a host family for the participant, as we strongly believe that this is the best introduction to the Flemish culture and a great opportunity to integrate in the local community. The host family will provide lodging and food. They will be living close to the project and will be Dutch-speaking. AFS encourages the host family to use Dutch as a communication language with the volunteer, to help him/her to practise the Dutch language.

Consider further information about the type of Sending Organisation you want to cooperate with. This information can help the match-making between volunteer candidates, Sending Organisations and your organisation.
Age: 18 until 30 years old

The volunteer has to like children, be kind for children. He/she has to be interested in working with children. It would be nice if the volunteer would be social and somewhat extravert, so that he/she likes expressive plays with the children. Enthusiasm is very important!

The recruitment will be done by our AFS as coordinating host organisation.
AFS, the coordinating host organisation, strongly believes in the intercultural learning aspect of an EVS-experience. Therefore, the volunteer will be living with a volunteer host family, as we believe this is the best introduction to Flemish culture and a great opportunity to integrate in the local community. Candidates should be willing to share in the host family's daily life (spend some free time with them, occasionally join the family on activities outside the house, eat together, give a helping hand in the household... ) and should be motivated to live with and learn about Flemish people of different ages and opinions. They should also be willing to adapt to the local eating habits. On the other hand, we guarantee a family that is interested to learn about your culture and background and that respects your values and beliefs. Living in a host family is an excellent opportunity for both you and the family to broaden your cultural horizons!

Candidates who are not sure this suits their profile are advised to get in touch with someone who has experience with living in a host family. If you already know you prefer to live independently, please refrain from applying for this project.

We believe that meeting other opinions and other cultures is very enriching on personal and proffessional level. So our motivation for this experience is to discover other cultures. This is interesting as well for the staff as for the children of the center. It is an extra impuls to be open and tolerant towards other cultures. This is consistent with our mission. Culture can be discovered in very different ways. Some expressions of culture can be seen immediately, namely the clothes, the gestures,… The volunteer can also discover the culture of Belgium and the way of living here.

For us, as child care center, it is also very enriching to learn how child care is organised in other countries and cultures. Together with the volunteer we would like to look at the similarities and differences. We will question the volunteer about the organisation of child care in his/her country and we will explain the situation in Belgium. This is very enriching for both parties. Every culture has different focal points and alternative visions. To encounter with these visions can help our center to improve our service.

• the activities in which the volunteers could be involved and the activities the volunteers could create in your organisation. Please give examples of typical activities for the volunteers.
The volunteer will work together with the staff. The staff exists of 7 persons. Because this is a small group, the volunteer will be part of the group and he/she will be accepted very easy by the group.

The volunteer will have permanent guidance. He/she will always be together with one or more staff members responsible for a group of children.
The volunteer will have the following tasks:
- doing activities with the children: games, reading, playing outside. Here the volunteer could also develop an own project (see below).
- nursing the children (feeding the children).
- some household chores.

We would also like to ask the volunteer to develop a personal project with the children in which the intercultural aspect of the experience is extra visible. Once a week the volunteer could organise a thematic activity according to his/her talents. (The volunteer will be free to fill in this activity as he/she wishes!) Examples of such activities:
Music “How the children sing, danse and play music where I come from” (e.g. play a special instrument)
Literature “Which stories/fairy tales do we tell in …” (e.g. nursery rhymes)
Food “Cooking with special ingredients from …” (e.g. make country-specific dessert)
Seasons “Do we have the same temperatures, landscapes in … “ (e.g. fotographs, walk in the park, etc.)
It would also be a nice idea for the volunteer to organise an introductionmoment for parents and staff about his/her country and about the organisation of childcare in his/her culture.

Horário: A regular day would look like following schedule:
• *Arrival around 8.30 am
• * The volunteer will organise activities and games with the children together with two persons of the staff: singing, drawing, painting, taking a walk, dansing, etc.
• *Everybody helps at noon when we serve lunch.
• *After lunch the children take a nap. The volunteer can take a break for about one hour.
• *When the children wake up, the volunteer will be asked to help serving dessert.
• * The volunteer will organise activities and games with the children together with two persons of the staff: singing, drawing, painting, taking a walk, dansing, etc.
• *The parents come round for their children
• Percentages:
• caretaking: 25%, educative and recreative tasks: 50 %, domestic tasks: 25%
• Average of 30 hours a week
• Weekdays hours: from 9 am to 5 pm.
• We offer the possibility of one day off a week in close consultation with the coordinator.
• AFS, the coordinating organisation, will provide Dutch language lessons for the volunteer. These lessons will be given by an experienced teacher and will be organised in a central place that is easy to reach by public transport. The lessons will be organised weekly in the first weeks of the project.
