Resumo: The organization project’s main aim is to provide social outreach in various ways to needy people such as alcoholics, drug addicts, poor people, the homelss and lonely. The organization is an international movement, an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. To maintain the basic activities economically, and as a part of helping program, the organization runs a second hand shop where there is great need for volunteers. The organization also runs a guesthouse, which in summer season hosts tourists from all over the world, and in winter offers long term renting of rooms for all kind of people who are in need of a cheap room over a period. Some of those long term guests are lonely people and alcoholics.

The volunteers spend most of their time at the day centre which provides hot meals, shower facilities, resting areas, companionship and counselling to alcoholics and drug addicts. The organization tries to offer living arrangements for the volunteer either in their flat, at the guesthouse or with a host family in cooperation with the co-ordinating organisation. If The organization is unable to provide housing the co-ordinating organisation will do so and most likely offer the volunteer a flat share, shared with other volunteers. In some cases the volunteers may have to share a room. If possible the organization and the co-ordinating organisation offers host families but is not always able to do so.

The population of the city is about 180.000 including its suburbs, i.e. more than 60% of the whole population in Iceland. The cultural scene in Iceland is blossoming in many areas such as music, literature, theatre. The beautiful and unspoilt nature is always at close reach, both in the city and around the entire country. The city bus system, Strætó, is the cheapest public means of transportation. Bicycle paths are spread all over the city, making it easy and quick to reach all destinations by bike for those who are prepared to bike up and down hills in all sorts of weather; wind, rain, snow and sometimes sun.

Education in Iceland is on par with leading nations in Europe and at any given moment around 7000 Icelandic students are studying all over the world, so in general the intercultural experience of the population is high. The language is Icelandic, but English is the foreign language that most Icelanders are able to speak.

Perfil: The co-ordinating organisation and The organization would like to host volunteers between the ages of 18 and 30 years from all European countries and countries generally involved in the YiA programme. The volunteer/s will need to have initiative, general computer skills, will to learn and especially good communication skills as human interaction is very important in our work. It is considered strength to have a volunteer that can be independent and think on his/hers feet as often problems can arise that need swift solutions. The organization will emphasise the strength of the volunteer and how those skills can be harnessed to be valuable to the organisation.

No skills in particular are needed to come and be a volunteer at the organization . It has though been proven that those individuals that have fared best at the organization are those that show initiative, are independent and trust themselves to approach those individuals that use the Day Centre the most. Hopefully the organization can learn something from the volunteer, possibly a new way of doing something as well as the volunteer learning something by being at the organization. Some volunteers in the past have suggested ways of doing things that has improved the working of the day centre and/or been used to help those using the centre.

We hope that young people will find our profile on the EVS database interesting and submit an application. Once we have received applications we will review them and take interview using the media available to us such as e-mail, phone and Skype. Once a candidate has been chosen we will keep him/her updated on the process and hopefully positive response from the NA. The organization is open to working with all organisation‘s in the youth field and by doing so build up a long and trusting cooperation with sending organisations all over Europe.
Age: 18 until 30 years old

Tarefas: The organization has an international atmosphere as staff, volunteers and guests come from countries all over the world. Part of the organization's work is based on volunteer’s contribution as the Second hand shop is run solely on a voluntary basis. The organization is interested in hosting international volunteers as it adds value to its place. The organization offers a kind atmosphere, where staff and volunteers work together to give people with less opportunities a chance of a friendly talk and a feeling of belonging.

Altogether there are 9 staff members and 3 other volunteers.
Activities proposed will mainly be in the day centre, which is open 5 days a week. In the day centre people suffering from alcohol abuse, drug addiction, mental problems, the poor and needy and homeless people living on the streets come to have a warm meal, companionship, rest or sleep for a while, have their clothes cleaned, take a shower, get new clothes, speak to a counsellor, use the internet and have a friendly talk to volunteers, staff and guests. The volunteer can influence his/her work a great deal. There are certain tasks needed to be done at the Day Centre such as cleaning and helping the users of the centre to wash their clothes or help sorting out the items that the organization receives through the 2nd hand shop. The volunteer can then bring in his own interests and personality to the project such as cooking a dish form his/her home country, involve the guests at the centre in games such as playing pool or puzzle, help make the project “job for a day” a success which aims to offer people down on their luck some part time work to earn money. The volunteer is also encouraged to bring forth his/hers own ideas as to make the project interesting and also to help the Day Centre reach those vulnerable in Icelandic society. The people of the organization often need a friend to talk to and therefore it is considered a real plus to have a volunteer able and willing to approach the users of the Day Centre.

As mentioned above the volunteers provide friendship, play games and assist at the day centre as much as they can. The volunteers can opt to help out in the 2nd hand shop as well. On occasion the volunteers will have an opportunity to work at the guesthouse especially at quiet periods or when the day centre closes in the summer. If interested it is possible to take part in church activities and the organization youth club aimed at young people. If a volunteer chooses to spend time with the youth club he/she will be able to work fewer hours at the day centre.

The Second hand shop is more than a shop. It has its own community feeling as there come many regular customers. Free coffee is offered at the shop so some people come there to talk, and have contact with other people. The volunteer should approach the guest in a friendly manner and on an equal ground as a helping hand and a companion. There will always be another volunteer form the organization who is responsible for the shop during the hours the volunteer will be there.

At the guesthouse everybody helps around. The volunteer is expected to help with some practical work such as preparing coffee in the kitchen and sometimes cleaning (as cleaning the tables and preparing the saloon).

The volunteer working at the organization will have various learning opportunities such as how to approach and interact with those with fewer opportunities. One of the main learning opportunities at the organization is tolerance, tolerance towards people in sometimes very dire situations. How to show compassion and support if possible. The possible working opportunities at the 2nd hand shop and guest house would be to communicate not least in a foreign language but also to those using those services. Sometimes those using the day centre will need assistance using the computers as this is often the only place they have free access to the internet. The volunteers have often been allocated this task and by teaching others how to use computers will take communication skill, patience and understanding. As the organization works as one team the volunteers have opportunity to learn teamwork but at the same time learn how to work independently within the organisation in those various task that are performed every day.

The volunteer will be a part of a team, and as an international organisation it is very open to people from other countries and cultures. The organization is very open to new methods and thinking, and all new ideas are welcomed and if the volunteer is interested in adding new things to the project in co-operation with the staff it is well appreciated. The organization is concerned about the volunteer feeling comfortable and that the volunteer feels that he/she can use his/her initiatives.

The volunteer is expected to be in the project 5 days a week, including every second weekend. As the volunteer will take part in weekend activities he will have two days off during the week. The volunteer is expected to start in the project from 10 in the morning (can vary according to the tasks of the day). The voluntary activity will take up to 35 hours per week. One or two days a week will be in the second hand shop and three or four days at the day centre. In summer the volunteer may work at the guesthouse and is always welcome to partake in church activities. The organization has a youth club which the volunteer, if interested, can volunteer a part of his/her time.

The volunteer tasks are very varied and depending on the interest of the volunteer he/she can find her/his own place of value within the organization. The interests of the volunteer weigh heavy in the task he/she will be handling. A schedule with particular tasks will be made in cooperation with the volunteer. The volunteer will be part of the team, but not as a staff member that would otherwise not be hired. In the Second hand shop and the guesthouse s/he will always be there in company with a responsible party.
Holidays will be given during Christmas, Easter and other holidays in accordance with Icelandic laws and customs. For each month of work, there are 2 days of holiday, so for 6 months voluntary exchange there are 12 days of holiday and for 12 months exchange there are 24 days of holiday. When the volunteer takes his holidays, it is an agreement between the volunteer himself and the project.

The volunteer will most likely have board and lodging within the project, and have his/her own room. It‘s also possible that the volunteer will live with a Icelandic host family, or live in a flat with the co-ordinating organisation volunteers and possibly share a room with another volunteer. The volunteer will have breakfast and lunch in the project, and possibly also dinner as well. In addition to that the volunteer will get food money for the meals he does not get in the project.

The volunteer will receive due allowance (pocket money) on monthly basis and a bus card. The volunteer will receive up to 35 hours of language training on arrival in Iceland. On-going support and training will be provided by the staff and co-workers of co-ordinating organisation, daily training by the staff of the organization and a personal support is given by the volunteer’s mentor.
