Resumo: The house Katharina-von-Bora is locatedin in north of the centre. The traffic-calmed area and the proximity to the lakeoffer a high quality of life. At the same time you can find good mobility options through the local transport. Weißensee is characterized through various park and green areas, the lake Weißensee and its swimming station, open spaces as well as a lot of well conserved buildings and single family houses. More and more young families decide to live there as this area is calm, green and close to the centre. The population is mixed; you can find a high percentage of people who are living there since long time and with different economical background. There are different sport clubs, cinemas, shopping possibilities at the nearby, churches and cultural associations. The one of the night-out areas with pubs, clubs and cafes etc, is in short distance and easy to reach by bike or public transport.
This is a city that offers a huge variety of cultural, sportive, international and political life. The city has 3.5 million of inhabitants, out of them around 500.000 people with migration background. The city is surrounded by huge forests and water areas, which offer relaxation and nature.
Perfil: The volunteer mustn´t bring in special skills. The only very important issue is that he/she should be well prepared and ready to work with people with mental disabilities. Ideally the person already has some experiences in this field (internship, relatives) to be able to understand what this means. But we welcome all young people who would like to start a volunatry year with us.
The volunteer should:
- be open to work in a responsible, independent way
- be open to live and work with people with dissabilities
- be willing to work in a tea
- beprepared to work in care and support.
We work together with other organization as co-ordinating organisation. We are open towards every application of all young people of the world, who are interested and want to work in our association. It is very important for us to provide as many information as possible beforehand to clarify each others expectation (e.g. through email contact). We invite interested young people to visit our webpage to get more information on us.
Age: 18 until 30 years old
Tarefas: The volunteer will be working and living in the Katharina-von-Bora Haus. Around 45 people with mental disabilities between 30 and 90 years old live there (in general their whole life).
There are also homes for children and youngsters with disabilities, workshops, a day-care-centre, a school, an elderly home, a gym and a huge garden. The volunteer will be supporting within one of the living groups. About eight inhabitants live there together as independent as possible, every one has a single room and they care for themselves. In their every day life and this process of independent living they are supported, especially in those situations when they need help. Here it would be helpful if the volunteer could assist the staff; offering and supporting free time activities, home work, guidance when going shopping, cooking and eating, helping in their daily activities such as getting up, getting dressed, evening activities and so on. The volunteer will not be working in the field of hygiene as we don't want to cross personal limits and employ special skilled people for that. We try to support the very practical things such as cooking, baking, gardening, music and arts and special stimulation in the room of senses. It would be very welcome if the volunteer could assist the vacation trip we do once a year with the group inhabitants. We also welcome any kind of ideas for free time activities in the afternoon and week ends - and for the retired people also during the day (creative, sports, cultural …).
The volunteer will be working in different shifts: generally this could be in the morning (7:00-13:00), in the afternoon (15:00-20:00) or at weekends. These shifts and working time can be accorded together with the volunteer depending on interests and possibilities. Working at weekends will only occur in rare occasions. The weekly working hours will be 30-35 hours; two days off a week. Due to the missing qualification and profession the volunteer will not be working in the night shifts. The language course will be considered as working hours. Vacations should be taken in agreement with staff and director.
In our institution it is possible to gather diverse experiences in the different areas of the work with people with (mental) disabilities: design of every day life, how much independence is possible and how can this be fostered, getting to know the "supporting communication" for people who don't have enough verbal communication skills; how to foster them upon their individual capacities; work with their families; supporting therapies as music-, psycho- and physiotherapy; working in shifts; team work; organising and implementing activities; living together with people with mental disabilities and understanding their expressions of feelings, communication, behaviour and necessities. We have regular capacity training in which the volunteer can take part. Additionally we can see if there is a an interesting workshop of one of our capacity training centres as Hofbauer Fortbildung to ensure a good view into the work with our target group.
For all these activities and learning opportunities we would like to point out explicitly that the volunteer will only be working supporting and assisting our staff. Due to this and the fact that he/she will be unskilled, special working areas cannot be assumed by the volunteer and he/she will not assume the guidance of a group all on his/her own. The volunteer will take part in the team meetings and reflections and will be considered part of the team. Independence and team-thinking are very important to us. We welcome new points of view and ideas; these should always be agreed with the team.
The volunteer will be living in one apartment (2 rooms, kitchen, bathroom) in the living home. Maybe he/she has to share this apartment with another volunteer or intern; each one gets a single room. The food supply will be organised through the living groups on one hand; on the other he/she will receive food provision or food allowance.
